For me, the one song that can always bring a lump to my throat is Eva Cassidy singing SONGBIRD. The first time I heard it, I was entering somebody's dining room with a group of people just behind me. This song was playing softly in the background and I literally stopped in my tracks and gasped. (Of course, everyone else bumped into me from behind!) What song does the same for you?

Modern - "I wasn't expecting that" by Jamie Lawson - so sad.

Classical - Caro Nome from Rigoletto - the last bit is like liquid silver.

When you walk through a storm from Carousel. My mantra for life.

For me, it's the Fields of Athenry by the Dubliners as it was my dad's favourite and he taught all the grandchildren to sing it. My daughter is going to have the First Time Ever I Saw your Face as her wedding entrance music so that will probably make me cry!

'Leaving on a jet plane' is high in the lump in throat category for me

Parsleywin Sun 04-Feb-18 17:45:29

Leonard Cohen's Hey, that's no way to say goodbye. Or Suzanne. Or Dance me to the end of love...

There are 2 songs that always stop me in my tracks:
Peggy Lee, 'Is that all there is'?
The other one is:
Dusty Springfield, 'Going back'.
I just cannot choose between them.

I recently was amazed and delighted to meet a very low key Peggy Seeger at a local lobbying event - she's the woman Ewan McColl wrote 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' for.

Seasons in the sun, by Terry Jacks.

Last time it came on the radio when I was in the car, I just burst into tears.

Those were the days, by Mary Hopkin has a similar effect on me nowadays too. Must be an age thing!

Alima Sun 04-Feb-18 19:46:28

So many beautiful songs already mentioned. Loving You by Minnie Ripperton. Not only because I love the song and the wonderful memories it brings to the fore but also because she died not long after recording it. Another song which I have always found a tear jerker is Puff the Magic Dragon. He dies at the end, always found that hard.

If Passing Strangers gets you, have listen to Niel Sadaka singing I Miss The Hungry Years. Even writing it makes me sad.
I've spent my life quoting Pegggy Lee saying "Is that all there is" grin
Another ( besides many on here) is Gladys knight singing Your the best thing that's ever happened to me.

Bathsheba Sun 04-Feb-18 20:21:29

Another Day in Paradise - Phil Collins. It gets me every time.
