Pink hair??

I have always said that when I went grey I would dye my hair pink.

I am nearly 70 and there is barely a sign of grey. I have long nipple length hair which is very dark brown and I have this yen to dye the bottom 6" or so pink. I could always cut it off if I did not like it.

So....shall I do it? How might I do it, as it is very dark and might not take dye? Am I mad?

I seldom ‘panic’ Lucky ( about anything) and certainly not about a fellow GNers wrinkles ( or lack of ) grin
I was just interested in the reasoning behind you deciding to do this.
I actually don’t think it will look pretty ( the last six inches )
But what may look pretty is a broad -ish streak, or a lot of fine ones. They will fade out to light blonde.

I really like all these different hair colours and would love to try a streak or two of pink or violet - but I think my appearance is far too mainstream and uninteresting to carry it.

That’s it Eloethan, I think you have to keep fun coloured hair looking fresh. I also think you have to dress up and live up to your hair. Ladies that look like ‘little old ladies’ with pink hair seem a little sad.
I think I could carry it off and I’m sure you can lucky. But I can’t be bothered. I like an easy life.

Just before my 70 th last month I had a colour called amethyst by Schwarzkopf put into my hair at the back and sides. I really love it and have had a number of compliments. it washes out and hair grows. Go for it. It’s cheered me up.

I definitely do not want streaks of any colour throughout my hair - I think I am very lucky to still have my dark brown hair and treasure that.

I just think a bit of pink near the bottom, perhaps in an under layer, would be fun.

MissAdventure Fri 27-Jul-18 20:58:50

I had a pink bit at the bottom of my hair for a while.
It started off really bright, then faded to a pretty baby pink colour.
Once it was done, I could top up the colour myself.

I think that would look great luckygirl. Go for it.

I bought a set of hair colour powders in green, turquoise and purple. I put loads of different colour streaks in all over and it looked fantastic. Lots of compliments.

Just brushes out.

The older women I have seen with pastel hair colours have not looked great..it kind of accentuated their age and they have not successfully dressed to match their hair. Sticking with the grey fleece and elastic waisted trews Edinburgh Mill style. It always looks a bit desperate on the women I have seen. I would ask a hairdresser's advice and/or a personal shopper who have good experience of an 'overall look'.
Having said that you may look ab fab with pink hair and it suit you and your fashion style to a T and if it makes you happy then it is not a problem!

My hair is 'blondish ' and I had two wide purple streaks in it down one side, for the last year. I'm 69. I loved it and will have it done again

Yes, go for it , you only live once and it’s easily rectified if you don’t like it ....

I am lucky and do not have grey hair at 79, it is dark blonde. My Mum still had auburn hair when she died aged 98, it had just faded slightly. I have a few lighter highlights put in every few months.

Molly10 Sat 28-Jul-18 09:43:01

Go for it!

Not to put a dampener on your enthusiasm Lucky but my DD had a moment of madness at Christmas and had her beautiful, natural blonde, curly hair dyed a kind of turquoise/blue. Months later we tried just about everything possible to strip it out and nothing worked. She ended up having the whole lot cut out . Apparently these “false colours” are almost impossible to remove.

Rowantree Sat 28-Jul-18 09:47:51

gillybob I'd love to know what brand she used! All the green dyes I've tried wash out too quickly...

Franbern Sat 28-Jul-18 09:49:37

When I was younger (back in the late 50's) I used to have vivid pink highlights in the front of my dark brown hair. Did them myself at home, but did need firstly to bleach those hairs before applying the pink colouring.
I stopped these highlights as time went on, too much faffing around as my hair did and still does grow extremely quickly, but always kept it coloured. As I got older I used a lighter colouring, and was turned 70 when I finally decided to stop using that and see how grey I actually was. About 70% was the answer, and I love it, just wish the rest would go the same colour - I so envy people with beautiful full heads of grey hair, cannot get that out of any bottle.
Personally, I believe that whatever we do, if we feel good about it then is quite correct, had my long hair cut short after the birth of my third child some 45 years ago.

gillybob Sat 28-Jul-18 09:51:34

It was actually a kind of turquoise /bluey/green Rowantree not sure of the brand though as she had it done in a salon. I just know she couldn’t get rid of it . I’m wondering now....... unknown to her at the time she would have been pregnant when she had it done. I wonder if that made it “take” more ?

Luckygirl Sat 28-Jul-18 09:54:22

Point taken gilly - this is why I plan to have streaks of pink in the under layers in the last 6" - if it does not work out I can just cut that bit off!

PECS - my fashion "style" - if you can call it that! - is jeans/linen trousers, tunics etc. I do not even know what the Edinburgh Wool Shop is!!! grin A bit of pink would definitely go with the "style" - never wear skirts, heels, tights, or indeed anything at all that might vaguely be designated smart/posh!

I was in the hairdressers a few months back and another client had hers died a lovely light purple. It looked stunning. Go for it.

jenni123 Sat 28-Jul-18 10:32:03

i'm 76, have very fine hair but it has been all colours, the last time I went to the local college and they did a lovely job, can't really see all the colours they used in the pic but I was pleased with it.

GabriellaG Sat 28-Jul-18 10:32:42

At your age? NO

Iam64 Sat 28-Jul-18 10:37:01

What’s age got to do with it?

GabriellaG Sat 28-Jul-18 10:45:38

Iam64

Nothing really but IMO having a totally different colour 'halfway' down your hair puts you in tbe hippy class. At 20 you would be smiled at, at knocking 60 it would be a laugh.
If, like Helen Mirren and others with blonde/silvery hair, having a wash in/ out colour can be wonderful.
Balyage or the bottom 6 inches a totally different colour, such as pink on brown would be at odds with a face no longer in the flush of youth.

Luckygirl Sat 28-Jul-18 10:46:24

jenni123 - stunning!

Gabriella - what age should you be to do this I wonder?

luzdoh Sat 28-Jul-18 10:46:40

Luckygirl YES! Do It!

My hair is slowly going pale grey and I was thinking of having "dipped" ends, possibly blue.

My Hairdresser said I would need to have it bleached first as there is some darkish hair around the back. Then you apply the pink or blue or whatever.

I would get a Hairdresser's advice.

You can apply streaks of colour with special hair colours. They don't always work very well. I saw a youtube where they ran coloured eye make-up through strands of hair. It looked great! It washes out so no problem there.

MissAdventure Sat 28-Jul-18 10:49:47

I had the turquoise colour put into the bottom of my hair, and it never actually went, just got cut off bit by bit as my hair grew.
It went from pretty turquoise, to khaki, to fag ash grey with green tinges.
I went back to pink after that.
