I must say that some are easier to spot than others and I do feel for posters who pour out their experiences in an attempt to help someone when in fact the OP may not be all they appear to be.

I think Izabelle is right. The motives of those pointing out what seem to them like dodgy posts are not smugness or superiority, and they don't forget that they were once newbies. They sometimes see what looks remarkably like an attempt to bamboozle those same newbies, and can't help posting a warning. Would it be better to let their kindness be taken advantage of? Possibly, and perhaps intervention by admin is better, but HQ is busy, as they have said, and we are not 5 year-olds, needing Mummy or teacher to sort out everything for us.

Active moderation could be the answer, but that would need a lot more of someone's time, and we would have to pay for it.

Well you are entitled to your opinion HOTMT but I am surprised you bother given the contempt in which you seemto hold the majority of posters.
I appreciate you may be smarting after the reaction to your “biting “ anecdote, but others are entitled to their opinions too.
And when GN is targeted by troublemakers with stupid, time wasting or even obscene threads, why should those who spot them not take action and report them?
So your heavy sarcasm just suggests you are still holding a grudge and lashing out.

HOTMT, I don't feel smug, superior or any of the other kind words you have used but, because I have been here for a long time, I have a nose for trolls and am really cross when some mischief maker hoodwinks some of the 'newbies' who might not have developed a feel for the posts on this forum.

HOTMT does sound cross. I can't help but feel that if the posters putting fake posts on the site are not stopped in their tracks they might cause a loss of faith in the site; so go get 'am girls.

On the matter raised re posters having more than one identity I refer back to the words of GNHQ and the subsequent comments as to whether or not it was a good idea.

I asked Gransnet to look at the thread by Chocolatesnowman about the abused daughter and i see it has been removed so all kind people who were getting upset by the story of abuse it was a sick joke by a sick person by the looks of it

To be honest there are so many dodgy threads that I rarely respond to unknown names, which is a pity as there could be some genuine posters in need.

Those of us who've been around a while can spot them a mile off.

When you register you have to give a real name & email address as well as your username, if I remember rightly. HQ also have your IP address.
With all that information I think it’s relatively easy to check out someone’s digital footprint & if someone claiming to have a grandchild also has a Facebook presence as a 30-something man that’s going to raise doubts.

It really does take a sick minded person to post about child abuse. Being as suspicious-minded as I am about anything of that nature it makes me think about the poster itself.

Anything like that just tell them to get lost. There really are some screwballs online. Nobody posts stuff like that anyway as it's a police job.

Fibs ( festive fibs?) there are too many of them, it’s a waste of our time in even responding to them.

How anybody could abuse a child that had been in foster care and then magically reappeared aged minus 15 is beyond idiotic.

lemon, I guess if they were fibs or flights of fancy it would be one thing, but to reel people in with tales of broken families and abuse is a whole other level.
