What I object to in all the discussion (not just on Gransnet) around this topic, the one about Mark Field and many others where 'misdemeanors' are excused, is the many commentators who state that we have ALL had too much to drink/overreacted/lost the plot/went too far/etc. I object because I cannot think of a single instance in all my long life where I did any of the above. I do not regard myself as some sort of sainted person, just representative of the vast majority of people.
We lived for some years in a badly soundproofed modern block of maisonettes, where we could all hear if someone was singing, a baby was crying, someone was running a bath. This was very annoying, but all the families did their best to minimise noise and there was some grumbling but no aggression among the residents - a random selection of families.
But that is not the point I am trying to make. My point is that in all those years of hearing everything that was going on, I never, ever heard anything of concern - no shouting and swearing, no bairns getting thumped and bawling, no screaming matches, no slamming of doors, or banging on doors demanding entry. We had the only phone in the block and consequently were asked a few times to report medical emergencies, but never to call the police. I am not naive, I spent 18+ years as a Women's Aid worker and know of all the awful things that go on behind closed doors and sometimes in public places, but to justify abuse and violence by claiming that we ALL do it is ridiculous.
