Environment and 'Ok Boomer'

There appears to be increasing substantial bad relations between generations on social media, generation Y seem to blame Brexit, high housing costs, the high care and pension tax burden, the environmental and financial difficulties on the W - Baby boomer generation rather than the older V generation. There is also an increasing appetite for associated death for the elderly amongst the younger generation.

Do you find this situation happening in real life or is it mainstream and social media lead during a time of reduced resources?

I actually don't have a problem with adapting for climate change, I don't need well intended strident zealots telling me how to live according to their ideology, when they are young healthy and aren't well informed.

www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/28/eu-parliament-declares-climate-emergency

-Speaking to the Guardian before the vote, the Swedish meteorologist-turned Green MEP Pär Holmgren said other political groups hadn’t grasped the urgency of the climate crisis. “You could sum it up by saying: for the moment we are heading for 3C, which is of course better than 4C, but it’s far from well below 2C, aiming at 1.5 degrees which we have promised to each other, to future generations.”-

-Separately, the Climate Action Network, a coalition of 1,700 NGOS, warned that member states would have to overachieve on the EU’s existing 2030 carbon target to keep on track with the Paris climate agreement.-

crystaltipps I wasn't 'bashing' vegans. I was saying that veganism is not the only way to save the planet. And where did I say that vegans were young?

This habit of dismissing people without listening (or reading) what they have to say is what I am talking about.

This is going to get worse, I am giving up on some social media, I do not want someone who has no idea what it's like to be on a small income, who is not as fit mentally or physically as them telling me I am 'csncelled' as a human being and these people going batshit at people not buying bamboo toothbrushes, doing various sorting, recycling, purchasing approved by an ever changing set of acceptable rules.

It's like high throwaway on trend fashion has been replaced by high throwaway opinions, lifestyle choices and moral code.

It's not my plastic in the sea, I knew years ago that the UK was sending our rubbish abroad. I have been living as environmentally sensitive as I can for about twenty years, this stuff isn't new to me, you then get people new to this who a year ago were living like Prince Harry bossing the rest of us about, what's new is the panic and cult like behavior.

janeainsworth Thu 28-Nov-19 16:45:57

Weekendvisit I’m sorry that you have had some less than courteous replies to your OP.

I saw that ‘OKBoomer’ thread on Twitter and felt very sad about it.
But that is Social Media for you. People think they can hide behind their usernames and say things that if they wrote on paper to the editor of a print newspaper wouldn’t ever be published.
And it’s not just young people who do it either. I have seen just as much vitriol from Boomers themselves and people who belong to Generation X.

I just wanted to know if it's gone beyond SM into real life.

www.psychologytoday.com/za/blog/the-science-behind-behavior/201911/3-psychological-drawbacks-the-popularity-ok-boomer

It’s only a matter of time before an impatient teenager brushes off a frail person in a supermarket checkout line or a young manager humiliates an older subordinate, retorting “OK Boomer” just because they are old.

My children and I aren't impressed with this stuff, as the above states, it has potential to go beyond the SM original intent.

Callistemon Thu 28-Nov-19 17:17:05

You don't generally get so many different labels, prior to WW2 most people shared a universal moral code.
That could be true, WV

WeekendVisit Thu 28-Nov-19 17:21:56

Most people in the UK prior to the world wars were CoE, atheism for example was not as mainstream as it is now.

In WW2 Germany - Bonhoeffer predicted the Western void we now live in, many ideologies competing to fill the Christian void and be the new dominant moral code.

Cherrytree59 Thu 28-Nov-19 17:24:01

Well I'm not sure if I am a Baby Boomer or not, born 1959.

I do know I am a Waspi and since my Daughter will probably have to work until about 70, she will like other parents be unable to provide child care, after school care, holiday care for her grandchildren.

I do hope that the millennium generation, when the time comes will not be asking the Baby Boomer
great grandparents for child care help or indeed help with mortgage deposits or inheritance.

Cherrytree59 Thu 28-Nov-19 17:28:45

Should clarify that I am only talking about those young adults who share the views as described by the OP.
hopefully not my GC's future thinking

My concern is that they are keen on assisted death legislation changes, so they can maximise their inheritance and reduce their caring responsibility and tax burdens.

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:33:18

janeainsworth I hope you are not apologising for me madam. angry

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:35:34

I would stay away from whoever you are following on Twitter OP. Perhaps get to know some of the XR who do the groundwork. You could even find your nearest group and go along and have a chat. I think you would be surprised.

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:36:18

This assisted death stuff is rubbish.

Callistemon Thu 28-Nov-19 17:36:50

so they can maximise their inheritance
If we all vote Labour there will be no inheritance - it will go to the Government in tax or be confiscated under the land grab scheme.

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:38:52

the Western void we now live in, many ideologies competing to fill the Christian void and be the new dominant moral code

Most normal everyday people do not live in any kind of a void. They work hard and live their lives to the best of their abilities. And that includes caring about others less fortunate than themselves.

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:41:08

It hasn't gone beyond social media into real life. Most people in the real world wouldn't have a clue what this is all about.

M0nica Thu 28-Nov-19 17:42:18

If our generation has/is ruining the planet, why did the news report today that the average household buys (and discards?) 54 bags for life a year. It certainly isn't our generation doing it.

We went out to lunch last week and on the table behind us were 6 30 somethings. All they talked about was all their long haul flights on holidays in Hawaii and Patagonia and the states and Australia.

When I walk down my street and see the overflowing bins and food buckets, It isn't the older households they are outside.

I will take advice from young people when they start setting me a good example. Anyway I am not a Boomer, I am a War Baby.

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:43:27

Not true that people before the world wars were all gGod fearing church goers. Probably just as many non believers as now, just no internet to broadcast it on.

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:44:59

Let 'em try brushing me off in a supermarket queue.

Cherrytree59 Thu 28-Nov-19 17:46:22

Yes Weekendvisit
But a bit short sighted,
If they knock us all off,
who will take on child care etc.
Help with finances.
We can leave our money to the cat and dogs home.

I just put it down to the lack of life experience and at some point reality will hopefully kick in.?

janeainsworth Thu 28-Nov-19 17:52:35

Gonegirl I hope you are not apologising for me madam
I wouldn’t dream of apologising for you. Why would I?
That doesn’t mean I can’t be sorry that you told another poster to fuck off.

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:53:43

Oh read the thread properly and stop being so holier than thou. hmm

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 17:55:43

Read all of the effing thread. I've already said it was the author of the article that should fuck off.

Summerlove Thu 28-Nov-19 18:03:12

cherrytree, millennials Actually were born ~’81-‘00. Your daughter might be one? I was shocked when i realized that the range started so early.

It’s interesting though, it’s actually the people I know who are in the boomer range who are far more wasteful than the younger generations over all. They are “set in their ways” and refuse to recycle, keep lights on and heat up when not home. Drive instead of walking.

We all know different sorts, don’t we.
