Am getting storm ready grin candles and matches....
Plenty of food in.... moving pots of emerging Spring bulbs to shelter.....
Hope you all have no problems, but perhaps tomorrow could
Say how things are in your neck of the woods.
My DH is always worried about fencing being blown down as we seem unlucky on that score.

Windy here in South London, very very gusty. Took our dog to the park earlier, we all avoided standing under trees (!), and for the first time ever, doggie rushed to and then jumped into the car after our walk to get away from the wind.

Hope all well with everyone elsewhere in the UK and nearby ?☔️?

Copied from duplicate thread:
All over here too (Tyneside). Bright and sunny now.
But it was pretty bad earlier - I try to go out every morning whatever the weather and earlier it was very windy and wet.
Not just steady wind, but sudden gusts that took me by surprise and nearly knocked me off my feet.
But got back in one piece TG.

North west started lovely, but at 11:20 had the most horrendous storm. Horizontal rain was so heavy and blustery. Part of the fence is down already! The garden is covered in large puddles and the dog is not very happy at all....

It's getting interesting out there. The wind just lifted one of the hens up in the air - by the look on her face I'd say she thought she was actually flying

Fennel Sun 09-Feb-20 12:45:51

grin - poor chuck, I know how she felt!

Scribbles Sun 09-Feb-20 13:03:32

Nandalot, I hope there weren't too many crushed snowdrops under there?

I was woken several times in the night by the force of the rain (possibly hail) on the window. The wind is just getting worse and worse and I'm keeping a wary eye on a couple of trees nearby. I'm certainly not going out today!

I'm so glad Daughter drove home to Essex last night instead of waiting until this morning. Absolutely not a day to be out on the M11.

Greyduster Sun 09-Feb-20 13:04:10

We’ve had a shocking morning in South Yorkshire so far - the rain and hail was coming down so hard half an hour ago that it set off our neighbour’s car alarm off - twice! Earlier, I was watching a seagull perfectly framed in one of our living room windows, wings beating, going nowhere for the longest time. Then it gave up, turned about and decided to go with the flow! You know you have to stay put when the seagulls can’t manage!
Bohemian your hen will dine out on that one for a long time!

I live on a narrow boat. I am being hit side on by the wind. I have weathered many a storm... My storage box on jetty has gone over but pretty sure nothing has gone in river. Will sort it all out tomorrow.

boheminan Sun 09-Feb-20 13:09:06

...Greyduster she could be heard crooning 'When I see an Henephant Fly'grin

Lizzie66 Sun 09-Feb-20 13:18:14

Well, you learn something new every day. I have always thought that ‘Cooee’ was an aboriginal bush call. As a child though, I remember my mother and aunts using it when they came calling. It seemed then to be an old lady thing.
No offence intended to younger people who use the call!

Lilyflower Sun 09-Feb-20 13:21:48

Wind, lightning, thunder and near horizontal rain here in leafy Bucks. I am very glad we took notice of the weather report and got our walk in before the heavens opened.

Tweedle24 Sun 09-Feb-20 13:25:29

craftyone I remember 1987. I slept through it all and, when I woke up, I wondered why the radio did not work and there were trees across the road!

I am completely surrounded by huge beech trees and every one carries a TPO, so I just have to keep my fingers crossed

We used to get a lot of power cuts here so have a camping stove and kettle, lamps, candles and an open fire. So far today not needed.

I did not venture out for church this morning,

Seriously, to all you mature (but reasonably able) ladies who live alone, what would you do practically if a sizeable window did blow in in the middle of the night? My first inclination was to phone my insurance company then the practical me thought what a fat lot of good that would be in reality. This has only entered my head since my large bay window has started rattling. Never happened before. I'm quietly confident it will be okay but this train of thought inspired me to ask you wise and experienced singles out there. All thoughts will be appreciated.

Gaunt47 Sun 09-Feb-20 13:34:29

Just heard the siren of the jeep carrying our lifeboat crew to station (north Cornwall). They could yet be stood down, but otherwise it's out into the storm for our lads. 8 metre waves recorded this morning off Isles of Scilly.

Tweedle24 Sun 09-Feb-20 13:36:41

Kim19 I live alone and worry about the trees coming down and hitting the house. It would not be the first time but, my husband was still here then.

I think I would ring the insurance company. They do deal with emergencies and I am sure that if you stressed that you are alone, they would treat your call as urgent.

Hope it stays in place?
.

Kim19 Sun 09-Feb-20 13:41:23

Thanks T24. Appreciated. Have my insurance details at the ready!

Curlywhirly Sun 09-Feb-20 13:54:45

Gaunt47 wow, fancy the lifeboat having to go out in such a storm, how very brave the volunteers are. Hope all goes well. Believe it or not, it is lovely and sunny now here in Cheshire, think we have escaped the worst if it; we had about half an hour of really hard driving rain at 11.00am, and it is windy, but definitely not a storm.

Foxyferret Sun 09-Feb-20 13:56:33

The ridge tiles on the porch over the front door have just crashed down. Thank goodness no one was standing at the door.

Grammaretto Sun 09-Feb-20 13:59:27

The storm is fairly whipping up here in the Scottish Borders.

Thanks for the concern Ginny about my leaking roof. There's not much we can do about it until the storm subsides - Wednesday?

My DB and SiL are due to fly here tomorrow from Denmark. They are following the gale warnings and several flights have been cancelled or diverted already.

Good news from my cousin in Sydney. There it hasn't stopped raining for 3 days

flaxwoven Sun 09-Feb-20 14:00:57

Sussex coast here. Storm force winds and driving rain. Wanted to walk to see the high tide but was nearly knocked over by a gust on the way, so turned back. Very mild. 10 deg. C.

NfkDumpling Sun 09-Feb-20 14:07:03

There’s some quite hefty squalls coming through here, but the trees are all bending with it and all seems well. Not a lot of rain either, I think it’s all dropped before it gets here. It doesn’t seem nearly as bad as forecast - yet.

Callistemon Sun 09-Feb-20 14:07:58

Kim19 I'm assuming that the window has not gone but the advice during cyclones is to put duct tape on the window, a big X across the glass, more if necessary.; it doesn't prevent it breaking but it does prevent it causing further damage by flying glass.
Or tape cardboard over the window.

Good luck.

It has suddenly got worse here in the west of the country.

Esther1 Sun 09-Feb-20 14:16:41

Leafy Surrey looking very leafy indeed - trees flailing about madly and our fence has blown down. Keep safe everyone.

BlueSapphire Sun 09-Feb-20 14:18:45

Very windy and pouring with rain here in Northampton; I keep anxiously looking at my fence. Thank goodness we had the huge ash tree removed from our garden a few years ago - it was about 10 feet from our French windows and I used to worry about it crashing into the house. As it was, big branches used to occasionally fall off it at any hint of a wind. It was a lovely tree but very unsafe.

NanaandGrampy Sun 09-Feb-20 14:19:34

It’s blowing a gale here in Norfolk and has been since the early hours .

We’ve lost 3 fence panels which aren’t an issue as we’ve been planning to take them down anyway but watching a gust pick up my aluminium bird bath , fling it over the fence into the field was an eye opener !
