A domestic !

I’m sadly lacking in the domestic side of our marriage of 48 years.

Today DH was huffing and puffing whilst taking the washing out of the washing machine as he had found a mangled tissue which had spread throughout the machine ? I said it wasn’t mine and he said it wasn’t his. He put all the little white bits on the kitchen floor beside him and asked me to get the dust pan and brush out to clear it up. I said ‘do we have a dust pan and brush?’ He assured me there was one in the downstairs cupboard. I asked how long it had been there ‘About 5 years he said’. Well that was a surprise to me. I dutifully got out said dust pan and brush and swept them up. I felt really hot doing it and told him I could have the virus ? he assured me I had not as I wasn’t coughing.

Well that’s the last bit of housework I’m doing this Spring. ?

Are you a domestic goddess ?

grin

No, definitely not.
However, even my grandsons know where the dustpan and brush are smile in fact we have a choice of the long handle one or the usual kind.

I'm afraid my sympathies are with MrKate.
There's nothing like a mangled tissue in the dark wash to blight the rest of the day grin

annep1 Sun 08-Mar-20 18:14:37

This is a joke, right?

Mapleleaf Sun 08-Mar-20 18:15:50

Annoying, aren't they? ?

Fennel Sun 08-Mar-20 18:20:30

grin NanKate.
So similar to our house.
Still I'm glad he has taken over some of the chores.
He keeps saying to me, "You're in charge of the food". Which is quite enough for me.

I'm definitely not a domestic goddess. Housework gets done in two circumstances: a) if things are so messy I can't stand it any longer or b) if we're expecting visitors. Otherwise I'd rather read a book grin

NanKate I have been trying and failing to be a domestic goddess for 45 years. I given up now. Put the damp washing in for a quick tumble dry (if you have one) the filter collects all the shredded tissue. Better things to do than housework. When needs must, I do it.

NanKate Sun 08-Mar-20 18:33:12

No it’s not a joke Anne I should have been born in the days of servants. I’m hopeless, but DH knew that when he married me.

Glad I have a few allies ?

annodomini Sun 08-Mar-20 18:34:17

The last time I saw the dustpan and brush they were in the bathroom and I have no idea why. There's nobody else in my house! So - domestic goddess, definitely not. blush

NanKate Sun 08-Mar-20 18:34:40

Yes I will do that next time morethan.

merlotgran Sun 08-Mar-20 18:43:13

Please don't anyone tell DH you can get long handled dustpans or I won't be able to plead a bad back.

kissngate Sun 08-Mar-20 18:44:42

Def not a domestic goddess, I blame our dog who sheds hair daily, shakes her wet coat all over hall and kitchen then runs in the front room with muddy paws. I could spend all day cleaning up after her but it is what it is. Usually have a clean round once a week but that's it.

Marelli Sun 08-Mar-20 18:49:30

No, I'm not a domestic goddess, either. I'm renowned/notorious for not being one.
I do try sometimes, but I daydream a lot and housework and daydreaming don't go well together. ?

Luckygirl Sun 08-Mar-20 18:52:20

Me neither. When OH had to leave work for health reasons and I had to go out to work more, he took over a lot of the housework - also because my efforts did not come up to his exacting standards.

I do remember a sweep visiting and wanting the vacuum cleaner so he could clear up - unfortunately my OH was out and I did not know where it was!

Marydoll Sun 08-Mar-20 19:00:00

I used to be a domestic goddess until had had to retire from being a domestic goddess on on health grounds.
DH has taken on most of the tasks, but often things look worse than when he started.

He has this "thing", about cleaning all the glasswork on a Friday. A few weeks ago, I noticed all the mirrors and conservatory doors were covered in white streaks, an absolute mess. He had used Flash bathroom cleaner instead of glass cleaner. What is even worse, he hadn't noticed. It took me ages to get it all off!

Yes, I do believe I am a domestic goddess and if you could see me hoovering in my fetching lacy pinny worn over just my vest and pants, I'm sure you would all agree. As I run the hoover over the floor in the lounge, I like to keep looking in each of my seven mirrors to see just how good I look.

Grandmafrench Sun 08-Mar-20 19:05:00

Ah bless, Marydoll - though it could be a deliberate ploy to coax you out of retirement. Don't fall for it, be very careful - you could find yourself back "in service" before anyone can say "dustpan".

GagaJo Sun 08-Mar-20 19:06:07

No. Not a domestic bone in my body. I should've been a bloke. I'm sitting trying to work in a room that is disturbing me because it's untidy. But it's my untidiness. Still, I'm not so disturbed I want to sort it out, which I WILL have to do at some point.

In the past, I've had a cleaner. But given that I now live in one room (working abroad) that would be a bit pathetic.

My bloke would have it that I'm a slob and he's a domestic god. 1) He's not got the looks for a god of any type. 2) His bedroom is scruffy, untidy and dusty. I am a slob though.

BlueSky Sun 08-Mar-20 19:11:04

Same here NanKate I delegated DH to do more and more household jobs as my efforts didn't come up to his expectations! Not sure what's left for me to do now! grin

SalsaQueen Sun 08-Mar-20 19:13:15

NanKate You don't do any housework? Have you ever done anything around the house?

I'm 60, work part-time, and I do the shopping, cooking, cleaning, washing and ironing for 3 of us here. I also see to the cat. Even when I worked full-time, I did all that.

mcem Sun 08-Mar-20 19:22:00

SalsaQueen Why?

NanKate Sun 08-Mar-20 19:27:47
