Actually the more I think about it the more I am disinclined to pay, I’d rather during these difficult times put the sub towards the charity helping the nhs I pay into monthly during these difficult times.

One thing to bear in mind that this is a very niche site- the target audience here - silver surfers if you wish- have money to spend in a lot of cases and want a particular raft of purchases.

There are very few other sites where this demographic can be targeted so specifically. So we ARE a valuable resource .

Prior to the new laws regarding data management selling our list of emails would have been a very valuable resource.

Thanks for the link, LaraGransnet (GNHQ). It was very useful and prompted me to read 'About Us'. For some reason, I connected Gransnet with a charity and I now see it is a commercial venture.

Personally, I am not bothered about the adverts so I would not pay a premium price to have them removed. Although I am drawn to Gransnet from time to time, I find it as aggravating as uplifting so I would not pay to come here.

I don't begrudge the founders success. They took a risk and it worked for them and, as it happened, us. There are many who have tried and failed costing the founders their savings and investors their money.

As many businesses have found in recent weeks, the unexpected can happen. If revenues shrink and costs are static, profits can turn to losses very quickly and absorb any cash in the business. In adversity, companies cut advertising quickly and, if your business relies on advertising, it can get tough.

If Gransnet gets through this in good shape, the Directors will have done a good job.

Anyone could have set up Gransnet. The fact is only these people did. Good for them.

No, I would not be willing to pay. I dip in and out of GN, and enjoy it when I do, but I think that the way it is set up is very disrespectful to posters.

Things like the inability to edit or delete, for instance. I completely understand that if that ability were there for an indefinite period after posting people could (and would) edit to make others look foolish, but maybe a five minute window so that we could check spelling/typos and for sense would be useful. the opportunity to delete if we change our minds about wanting something to remain in the public domain is pretty fundamental, and again, could easily be offered. I post on many forums where both of these facilities are available, and there are no serious consequences. A note to say that a post has been removed or edited is enough for readers to understand that the flow may have been interrupted.

Also, I am sure that there are very many threads started by people who are basically data gathering. I think that these should be monitored (eg is the poster a first-timer, or someone who only posts asking a question then disappears?) and flagged. I may or may not be willing to give info for commercial reasons, but I would like to be given the option with full awareness of how will be used.

There is no way of knowing if we get PMs. I have more than once missed the fact that someone has messaged me, and by the time I reply it has been weeks, which looks very rude. It is an easy matter to set things up so that we can see if there are new messages, and this has been asked for, but is always ignored.

I believe that there are differences between the facilities on Mumsnet and here, although they are operated by the same company. Why should this be? Again, it seems that we are not afforded the same respect.

Would there be a two-tier membership, with paying posters given different facilities from the rest? I can only imagine how that would go . Actually, I think it's a great idea, now I think about it. Someone pass me the popcorn - I may be here for some time!

Quite honestly with such a huge operating profit and extremely generous remuneration, I think you’ve got to think seriously where your donation will be going.

loopyloo there may be some pay to the directors included in this amount as some directors act as employees of the company and get a salary.
