Pubs and restaurants opening this weekend

A lot of pubs and restaurants are opening this weekend and I was wondering if anyone is looking forward to being able to have a drink or a meal out for the first time since lockdown? Our local neighbourhood Facebook group have just done a poll to see who will amongst the first to go and a surprisingly large amount of people (to me anyway) have confirmed that they can't wait! Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near but are you looking forward to a return, even with all the special measures for social distancing that they're doing?

My brother just posted this on fb. Very apt!

harrigran

No way will I be going anywhere near a pub, not our thing anyway.
We have had weeks of peace while they have been shut but the noise will start at closing time, tottering up our street and falling out of taxis. Takeaway deliveries usually follow the return home and often arguments spilling out on to the street. I hate that we have flats beside us, average tenancy is 6 to 12 months depending on how quickly their case gets to court.

You paint a vivid picture harrigran , particularly the average tenancy length!

No, I'll be doing what I normally do on a Saturday night - stay at home with the telly, sewing and a good book. There will no doubt be some idiots about flouting the rules and misbehaving.
There's a local football 'derby' which can cause trouble at the best of times and I wonder if some of the pubs will be showing this if they can.
I'll wait until 'normality' returns and go out for a nice meal in a pub which I feel will be a few months yet.

I hardly ever go to apub, except for quizzes, so no.

I really hope the idiots don’t spoil things for the rest of us this weekend.

We all know the type of places they will congregate, the scruffy boozers which generally don’t serve food to soak up the alcohol.

Meanwhile there are plenty of decent pubs which have built up a reputation for their food where people go with family and friends and just have one or maybe two drinks with their meal. There is unlikely to be any trouble at those.

I know we generally don’t have enough police but they all know which pubs in their area are likely to attract the daft minority and I would like to think they would keep a strict eye on those.

Restaurants and cafes should be fine.

I hope no one has an awful tale to tell on here later.

Oh yes gillybob , HAZBEEN
I hope it won’t happen but if there is noise and trouble at those nearby pubs, how about taking pictures or a video on your phones as evidence for the authorities?

You probably would have already thought of that but I thought I would mention it anyway.

Definitely won't be going to a pub, hairdressers or a restaurant. Haven't been to a shop for over 15 weeks - everything done on-line. Deliveries have been brilliant. Won't be risking it all now. Where there are people, that's where the virus is! Stay safe everyone.

We're booked into our local on Sunday evening and I'm really looking forward to it! And it's not particularly wonderful either, but still better than no pub at all.

Joesoap Sat 04-Jul-20 11:40:24

I think we older people will wait for a while, everyone has waited for so long, a while longer will be safer.Hospitality has to start sometime, but lets hope it all goes smoothly. There will be some who after getting a few drinks down them will be boistrous, but I hope they will respect the social distancing or we will all be back in lock down.

paddyanne Sat 04-Jul-20 11:46:33

What a cracker ...Bojo informs everyone TODAY ,that they can still only meet up with people who live in the same household unless they are OUTSIDE ...thats TODAY ,the day he's opened pubs !!

songstress60 Sat 04-Jul-20 11:49:06

I don't care if pubs never open. I am annoyed that parks, gymns and swimming pools are still closed. They are far more beneficial to health.

You talk a lot of sense and I totally agree with you.
I’ve really enjoyed a drink at home with Hubby and small pockets of family and friends in the garden at a distance(a little too much I have to say lol. Hence weight gain.). We will carry on like this for now but the young members of the family can’t wait to get to the pubs. But why oh why did they reopen on a Saturday night on July the 4th. I am very concerned about this weekend. It’s the minority who are going to spoil it I fear. But I totally get that things need to get moving and people back to work.

Godskitchen1 Sat 04-Jul-20 11:57:40

I won't be going out for a meal or drink yet.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Sat 04-Jul-20 11:57:42

Nope! To me a pub is about cosy atmosphere, or live music at other pubs I go to, include singing along and dancing, having a laugh with friends. All of these aren't allowed so to me not something I'd enjoy doing in the current situation. Too clinical, quiet and frankly boring. I also feel that way about the 'streaming' of events where there's no audience present. Can't see the point.

Speldnan Sat 04-Jul-20 12:38:08

Never went to pubs before so certainly won’t now! Did used to go for the occasional meal out but intend to wait and see if they generate spikes in infections before we venture out again. May have a coffee with a friend in a garden centre though if it looks safe.

Buttonjugs Sat 04-Jul-20 12:45:53

I think it’s very innovative myself, they have been struggling and probably close to bankruptcy. There may be trouble but hopefully not. The landlord will have to be vigilant, that’s all. He won’t want any trouble, because he needs the income. Try to think positive.

Buttonjugs Sat 04-Jul-20 12:49:13

Me too. After years of trying to get my adult son with ASD to exercise, he had been swimming first thing in the morning three times a week and he committed to it for almost a year. I remember the last time we went, getting that horrible feeling that this lifeline was about to be cut. And of course it was.

GreenGran78 Sat 04-Jul-20 12:58:56

It’s my birthday on 29th. We will review the situation then, and maybe get together for a family meal and celebration.
I am certainly going to keep out of the way, until the novelty wears off. I don’t drink, anyway, and rarely got to pubs since my DH died.
The fact that all weekend leave for police officers has been cancelled says it all. The number of illicit music events etc since lockdown began shows just how much respect for rules there is, especially in the younger age groups. They think that they are immortal and invincible.

ExD Sat 04-Jul-20 13:10:36

My OH can't wait and I don't understand why. It could be because he doesn't drink much and is the designated driver for a group of four friends. They used to go every Friday.
I don't think the four of them should be using the same car and I'm not convincd they will stick to the distance rules.
So he was shocked when I told him if he gets cv by going to the pub after all this time of keeping to the rules, I will move out into the caravan in the yard and he can nurs himself.
He hasn't spoken to me since.

DH had arranged to meet up with a couple of friends from his bowling team and they had booked the green at their local pub. The pub though has commandeered the bowling green and set up chairs and tables directly on the grass, plus a couple of gazebos. The bowling team pay for the upkeep of the green and have been told that the pub will not pay for repairs to the green. So, no we won't be going to the pub for quite a while. I expect other pubs with bowling greens will be doing the same. sad angry

HAZBEEN Sat 04-Jul-20 13:24:24

Well the pub over the road opened at 11am. At first not too bad but the noise is building in the beer garden, we have quite a bit of shouting as obviously people are calling to there friends as they walk in. We have had one lot of singing but only Happy Birthday and one what sounded like the beginning of an argument which has stopped. But we are only 2 hours in!! Oh yes and a lot of extra traffic.

BoBo53 Sat 04-Jul-20 13:27:46

Our son part owns a pub and although he has been working hard to get things ready he has decided for the sake of his staff and customers to wait a while before reopening! It is a large pub but with little outside space. He is trying out other pubs in the town to check how they are coping with the 51 pages of regulations. He will open later in the month when the opening scrum has abated.

Bijou Sat 04-Jul-20 13:30:02

I enjoy cooking but don’t like eating out. I think of how much better I could have cooked it and for much less cost.
Even when abroad friends asked why we would not go to the restaurant my husband replied “Why pay When you are married to a good cook.

BoBo53 Sat 04-Jul-20 13:32:16

Should add he announced his decision on Facebook had over 200 likes and all constructive comments!

A slightly different tack; Dorset was invaded by visitors recently during the hot weather, much to the loudly voiced disgust of local residents. Learned recently that three locals I know are off on their holidays this week, in their caravan, camper van and rented holiday home, two to Cornwall, who definitely don't want any visitors, and one to Devon. Two of the three couples have health issues.
