Pubs and restaurants opening this weekend

A lot of pubs and restaurants are opening this weekend and I was wondering if anyone is looking forward to being able to have a drink or a meal out for the first time since lockdown? Our local neighbourhood Facebook group have just done a poll to see who will amongst the first to go and a surprisingly large amount of people (to me anyway) have confirmed that they can't wait! Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near but are you looking forward to a return, even with all the special measures for social distancing that they're doing?

My daughter who lives in Exeter says that the Exeter junction of the M5 is jammed with people trying to get to Devon and Cornwall. Some people have no sense.

I am just so thankful that here in Scotland we haven't had to deal with this yet. I am now able to cuddle my DGC which is really all I want. I have stayed in and followed the guidelines. I haven't even been to a shop so will not be going out to a cafe or pub when we are allowed. It is of course only for the economy of the country that these businesses are open. It will be Russian roulette for those who go. Hardly a relaxing experience I would think. It will be interesting to see the infection rates in a few weeks. The virus is still as deadly as it ever was.

I live with my AD who works in the hospitality industry. They have reopened today but she has been in work the last two days training in the new procedures and getting her new uniform and PPE.
She works in an hotel, part of a small chain. She came home yesterday shaking and distressed, (she suffers from anxiety) saying that the housekeeping team (notoriously slapdash and lazy) aren't using the cleaning solutions that have been sent from HO but some all purpose wipes they bought themselves from the local hardware store. (Small market town, very provicial, Head of Housekeeping and her deputy are sisters, been in the job for decades, stuck in their ways).
The hotel has only recently been bought by this chain, just a couple of months before lockdown. DD asked for a container of the anti-viral cleaner supplied by HO and some Blue Roll for reception. Everyone knows there is a large supply of both in the Housekeeping Cupboard but was told, "you've been given some wipes, use them".
She reported it to the new General Manager who has promised to deal with the situation, but she's scared it will lead to reprisals, HK team are used to being autonomous and Head of HK is a control freak. DD has gone off to work with her own anti-viral spray and cloths from home (I am shielding) but she's terrified that they're claiming to be COVID free and sanitised but aren't really. No way would I be venturing anywhere to eat or drink just yet.

Dustyhen its coming,,50 motorcyclists from Manchester camped at the Commando monument at Spean Bridge last night ,the FB pages were not amused.Police apparently couldn't move them on because they had all been drinking, using the site as a toilet and generally getting up peoples noses .We actually heard them passing on their way North and wondered why so many ,now we know a wee day out for the boys!

Not safe! Not only is the virus still out there, there is a Covid variant (recently discovered mutation) that appears to be more contagious than its predecessor. There is also increasing evidence that some people are getting re-infected.

Masks and social distancing offer the most protection especially outdoors. Restaurants, indoor family reunions and bars are where most of the Covid spreading is being traced.

The US is now leading in a second wave resurgence and the numbers are staggering! Why? Because people like us were led to believe that we could let our guard down and that it was safe to resume.

The protests may have played a role, but I blame the political leaders who (even as I write) are enabling bars, restaurants, hair salons and beaches to stay open!. I get that the economy or someone's livelihood is important, but where does that leave us, when the trade off is the loss of even more lives?!

TerriBull Sat 04-Jul-20 15:12:11

Oh well 50 motorcyclists passing through, excrement or no excrement, probably isn't as bad as having travellers parked up for several weeks in a residential area and chucking their waste over residents' fences, which I posted about a year or so ago, and apropos of that, can't help remembering at least one poster saying something along the lines "if you look for trouble you'll get it" strangely when it's in your own backyard it becomes unacceptable hmm lockdown or no lockdown!

Purplepixie what is a barmy pot?

grannyrebel7 Sat 04-Jul-20 15:12:46

Barm (autocorrect again!)

Stella14 Sat 04-Jul-20 16:20:52

Nope, non, nada. It’s too soon and a terrible idea IMO.

Someone sent me a photograph taken outside an absolute dive pub in Newcastle this morning at 8.30am. HUGE queue of dodgy punters lined up.

There is a pub in my neighbourhood. When I moved here, about 10 years ago, it was quiet and respectable. Management must have changed because it can be very loud at the weekend. I'm sure they will be cavorting and risking life and limb there tonight. Natural selection.

Lindylou61 Sat 04-Jul-20 16:33:01

I definitely won’t be I’m still shielding until August 1st! My husband is planning on going to our local cricket club tonight and I’m full of dread !

Thecatshatontgemat Sat 04-Jul-20 16:47:56

Hell no!
Don't miss it, don't care.
Dreading the inevitable filth in the streets, when the drink hits the yobbos full force.
Yuk!

Just back from a late lunch with a friend at my local. Absolutely no problems and nothing to worry about. We were greeted at the door, handed a laminated menu and directed to our table.Tables were all pre-booked and are well spaced out (more than 2m in some cases). You have to order food and get drinks at the bar but any queuing was well spaced out and policed. Food, cutlery, condiments were all brought to the table. There were dispensers of hand cleanser dotted around the place, too.

It felt wonderful, after so many weeks of lonely house arrest, to do something so blessedly normal. Whoever would have thought that steak pie and a pint could feel so special?

I suppose things might get more raucous later in the evening but I doubt it. It's not that sort of pub and the landlord is notorious for not standing any nonsense from anyone.

They say use it or lose it and I'd really hate to lose our pub so I'll have no qualms about returning.

Oopsminty Sat 04-Jul-20 16:57:22

Good for you, Scribbles

I'm glad you had a lovely time

I'll not be going anywhere but our lovely local Chinese Restaurant is opening this evening and we will be ordering a take out

It's so important to help the local economy get back on its feet

timetogo2016 Sat 04-Jul-20 16:57:23

I`m not going to any pub/eaterie/cafe/fast food outlets or takeaways it`s round two of covid 2 in the making.
I drove past the local rather large pub today and it was packed albeit they were outside.
NO social distancing at all,in fact it`s the busiest iv`e ever seen it.
Total stupidity.

I think 50 folk coming from a Covid hot spot into an area which has successfully driven the numbers down is a bit different from travellers.Maybe you dont think thats a problem but we've had 10 days out of 16 with no deaths and numbers of infections dropping. The 2 areas where there was a rise and a small one both involved people crossing from England .Bojo might be keen for a second wave ,well his pub opening shows that ,but we'd rather not go down that route ,thanks

paddyanne Sat 04-Jul-20 17:25:47

By the way I still dont have any issues with the travellers who camp near me every year .

Covid hotspot ? Ah, you mean Dumfries and Galloway.

WOODMOUSE49 Sat 04-Jul-20 17:40:04

We've had a takeaway from both our fish+chip shop and the pub over past few weeks,

With both I rang first, ordered and paid. I was given a time slot to collect and they brought it out. Left at 2m away for me to pick.

Can't really see how much safer that could be. I washed my hands when I got home and after I'd put it on the plate.

Dustyhen2010 Sat 04-Jul-20 17:59:24

@lemongrove
The cluster in Dumfries and Galloway was traced to Carlisle. The area affected was around Gretna and Annan. There were in total 11 positive cases and it appears quashed.

TerriBull Sat 04-Jul-20 18:01:46

"You do understand if you expect the worst from someone that is what you will get" I've trawled back so I could quote you verbatim Paddyann, hope you appreciate that smile it seems you are always expecting the worst from anyone south of the border when they trespass into your country.

I hate to talk shit but apropos of your "I still don't have any issues with the campers who camp near me every year" only you insinuate that you didn't welcome the motor cyclists, English of course, using that area in Scotland as a toilet, well who would, sympathies there. However, and I accept that some travellers behave in a perfectly acceptable way, some don't, so do you suppose if your back garden was used as a receptacle for human waste, you might be inclined to go the full shouty capital letters, even if you weren't expecting the worst! hmm a bit of conundrum! English biker shit shock bad! Travellers' shit not great, but on the whole can't complain in the interests of Scottish/Traveller community relations hmm
