Lovely thing to say

I was talking to some neighbours this morning. They're just back from a visit to relations on the south coast and were telling me about their trip. Jenny* asked about my trip to Richmond 3 weeks ago. I said I'd enjoyed it but, all the same, was glad to be home.
"Well, I should think so," she said, "this is such a lovely, friendly house, it must be really good to come home to."

That's one of the nicest things that anyone's ever said to me! I've always hoped my home might strike other people that way but have never had any certainty.

* not her real name.

My son's late m-i-law was difficult, to put it mildly! One day, son sent me a text saying how glad he was that I was his mum.

Scribbles it’s a lovely compliment and good to know that waist makes you feel comfortable in your home, makes visitors appreciate it too.
I’m sure it IS lovely. ?

I had a sort-of compliment from my daughter’s friend aged 13. (some years ago). She stayed at our house often and said “I like staying here, everything doesn’t match. It does at my mum’s and she doesn’t like anybody to spoil it”.

When I lived in Glasgow a friend was coming round for a cuppa, I looked at the house strewn with children's toys. Did my best to tidy. When she arrived, I apologised for the mess. "Oh no," she said "your house is always so comfortable!"
Now it's just the two of us, it is plain messy!

"Your eyes are like shiny wet conkers, Grandma." from my granddaughter, then aged 6.

I was buying a coffee and a man, a complete stranger, said to me I hope you don't mind me saying you have beautiful teeth! As the kids say I was well made up.

When I had my second child my nightmare of a mother in law (I was always polite to her and wouldn't dream of antagonizing her, but she was just awful) sent me some flowers with a card saying 'To a lovely Mum' praise indeed as she was a very jealous woman!

Whilst out for a drink with my husband a chap came over and said what a lovely smile I had and told my husband he was very lucky!

I nursed my husband for 20 years (Parkinson’s disease) brain was brilliant. Unfortunately he fell and had a massive bleed on the brain, so no saving him but his last words to me were (he never spoke again or recognised anyone ) “ I don’t know what I would have done without you all these years”. Yes I have a beautiful homely home but those words are so precious to me. The greatest compliment paid to him was he was a kind, caring gentleman.

My grandson just yesterday. When out walking and son had popped a Barny Bear in the rucksack for a half way snack for him. On pretending to look for a 2nd one and realising there was only the one, unprompted he said ‘Never mind Grandma I can share.’ He broke it into two and gave it to me (the smaller piece, ha, ha) but a generous gesture non the less. For those who’ve not come across them, Barny Bears are a bear shaped sponge cake with chocolate filling - for children obviously but rather yummy for grown ups too.

I was doing the garden and singing a song that I had been taught by a previous singing teacher when a neighbour who actually was very loud and aggressive came up to me. I thought she was going to swear at me because that's how she spoke to people, but she actually said it sounded beautiful.

We had our house extended and renovated and have had lots of compliments about how lovely we have made it. So worth all the effort we put into it.

And just this week, following my retirement, my boss sending me a wonderful email saying incredibly lovely things about me.

Also, years ago I worked with two other ladies Jean and Sharon. My name is also Sharon. Jean and her daughters used to call me "nice Sharon" so they would instantly know which one they were referring to.

I always felt that my two sons missed out when they were growing up and that I wasn't=a particularly good mother so was delighted when the younger one said to me
" P and I were saying the other day what a lovely childhood we had"
That meant so much to me.

The local drunk came up to me in the street ( I hadn't seen him for years ) and said ' Hey , you know how you see people you've not seen for years and they now look like shite ? Well you don't look like shite ! '

winifred01 Thu 30-Jul-20 11:36:47

I looked after a family when their mother died. The girl was 6 The boys a bit older . They were a nightmare. I was with them for 10 years. . She recently sent me a birthday video saying she doesn’t know what she would have done without me in her life. She’s nearly 25. I cried and cried!

Blindfish50 Thu 30-Jul-20 11:39:33

My 20yr DVD often picked me up from shopping Tec as he works odd shifts. One day I asked him if his friend's do the same. He said 'no, they think I'm a bit weird, but I tell them it's because I really love my nan '. I was so touched it brought tears to my eyes. He's continued through shielding to get all my shopping and prescriptions and always popping round (socially distanced) for a chat. I love him to bits.

The nicest thing ever said to me was “ when you come in the room J... it’s like the light’s switched on “

MumsyDeer Thu 30-Jul-20 11:56:00

When my dad was dying he took my hand and thanked me for everything I had done for both he and my mum and then told me I’d always been his “little fighter” - I’ve had some serious & difficult times in my life eg ex husband, no maintenance, money worries etc but have fought through to where I am today - still makes me emotional to think about my dad’s last words to me...

My sister always says she loves my bathroom and garden. The bathroom because it always smells nice, and my garden as full of flowers, fruit and veggies. The veg patch is very random with flowers as well as veg and fruit to encourage bees etc for pollination and reminds her of Mr McGregor's from Peter Rabbit and she always expects a rabbit to pop out from somewhere. I also have shady areas where we sit on the hot days and sunny areas for the cooler days. smile

A friend’s father once said ‘if I had a second daughter I’d like her to be just like you’. Mind you my friend was a bit of a handful!!

bigbird1 Thu 30-Jul-20 12:03:43

I love you Nana....

Lexisgranny Thu 30-Jul-20 12:08:49

This reminds me of the high compliment that my grandmother would pay “you get a warm welcome, a comfortable chair, and she keeps a good table”

Kate1949 Thu 30-Jul-20 12:13:27

When I was in my 50s, I was at a bus stop when a very handsome young man walking past said 'May I say that you look lovely.' I said 'Oh thank you' He then asked if I had someone waiting for me at home. I said I had a husband. He replied 'Well he's a very lucky man'. I said that it was very kind of him and he said 'Not at all. Credit where credit's due'. Then he walked away. Made my day. smile
