Yesterday there was a thread about dogs barking, and I thought how much I would hate to live near someone whose dog barks excessively.

I think it could make me ill, seriously.

My mum didn't like the sound of washing billowing on the line when it was really windy.

Are there sounds that you love or hate?

My girl said a happy childhood memory for her was the sound of the grill pan sliding out for my toast, once she was tucked up in bed.

I love wind chimes, the sound of the sea, waterfalls and thunder.
I dislike whinning children, people who shout instead of just talking and barking dogs.

The sound of next doors sh*t machine I mean cat wanting to be let in during the night. It howls and cries and I want to throw a bucket of water over it. Ditto when its fighting with another cat. Almost always in my garden .

I like the sound of some windchimes - unfortunately my neighbour doesn't!
The sound of rain on a roof - lived in Aus for a while and the first flat we rented had a tin roof sounded lovely especially after a hot spell.
Wind through the trees, early morning birdsong, and the sound as the birds get ready to roost.

I hate the sound of sloppy eaters - next door neighbours were eating their dinner out in the garden yesterday evening and the noise they were making was enough to make you feel ill, followed by a cacophany of belching!
The sound of someone's music when they are wearing ear plugs and you get that horrible tinny background noise usually for the whole journey!
People sniffing. So many times I have handed over a tissue and had to stop myself yelling "for heavens sake blow your nose" at the same time

The scream at the end of the intro to the One Show just before the BBC 6 pm news. It goes through my head. What's the point of it? Getting skilled with the mute button.

The sound of an owl hooting in the night from nearby woodland. Sadly not any more as these beautiful creatures are being driven from their homes by the need for homes for humans.

Noisy eating - which goes with people not closing the mouth while eating!
Also mispronounced word - the letter T seems to have disappeared from a lot of words - today's weather is bu-i-ful, 'i' seems to be a substitute.

Rosina Wed 12-Aug-20 11:17:46

Motorbikes - they make me jump as they are just so noisy, and people who drive past with car windows down and deafening booming noises coming from the audio system.
But how I love the sound of the sea, wind in the trees, birdsong, and little voices calling 'Hallo Nanny!'.

jenpax Wed 12-Aug-20 11:18:48

I love the sound of buzzing bees, lapping water on the river, waves crashing on the beach, the dawn chorus, crackling of the fire, Sound of crunching fresh snow under foot, the whistle of a kettle, church bells.
Hammering and drilling I hate! also R&B or rap music.

Hate the constant drone of hot tubs and the people in them whooping it up. Yappy dogs whose owners do nothing to shut them up. Our near neighbour who talks so loud the whole street can hear her talking stupidly to her yappy dogs or cooing to her grandson. The sound of car and house alarms.

Love no sound at all, birdsong, everything my grandson says as he makes so many hilarious comments. The sound of ice chinking in a glass before the gin and tonic goes in. The welcoming neigh from my horse when she sees me. Not so keen on the sound of her farting in my face as I know the unpleasant smell that will follow it.

I love the sound of a hoover or "white noise", I have an app' on my phone which plays different noises, someone suggested it to me, when I had trouble sleeping.
It works like a dream....

We once had a neighbour who climbed into our garden and took our wind chimes down! She said they were disturbing her daughter's A level studies!
I get irritated by unnecessarily noisy children, especially the three next door. The oldest boy with the loudest voice I've ever heard! He makes all those urrggh, yah, aargh type noises that boys make and fights with his younger brother and sister making them whine and the sister scream! My husband hates the teenager next door who plays loud, weird music with an odd beat and the windows open.
I also hate snoring, ticking clocks, garden machinery and traffic noise.
I love birds singing, the sea, the wind in trees, and SILENCE!

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 11:27:18

I'm really intrigued by the windchimes, still.

Can anyone say why it is that they dislike them?

Is it the totally random, unordered sound they make?

songstress60 Wed 12-Aug-20 11:28:33

I love the sound of a ticking clock and waterfalls and wind chimes. I loathe the sound of caged birds like budgies and parrots. Their screeching drives me to distraction, and I can't stand the noise of motor bikes.

icanhandthemback Wed 12-Aug-20 11:28:48

I hate it when a dog sounds distressed and the owners can't be bothered to take it back indoors. The moment our dog barks, he is taken back in.
I can't bear the slow drill at the dentist. It hits a part of my brain that makes me want to take flight.
I don't mind louder sounds at night but cannot bear the a sound that you can barely hear. We had an oil exploration drill about 2 miles away from us and at night you could just about hear it ticking. It nearly drove me out of my mind.

Lupin Wed 12-Aug-20 11:29:23

I love the sound of children's laughter - particularly the unrestrained chuckle that toddlers can make. Conversely I hate the sound of an unrestrained toddler tantrum.
A sound I love is that of a cat purring loudly.

PinkCakes Wed 12-Aug-20 11:34:11

I've just remembered something else - people sniffing. My husband also does that. In fact, he seems to make a lot of noise. The snoring is the worst!

I suffer from Tinnitus, so I have a constant hissing noise in my ears (for the past 14 years) anyway.........

MissAdventure Wed 12-Aug-20 11:36:50

I used to love the sounds on a summer afternoon in the garden.
Maybe children playing a way away. The odd car in the distance, the air swishing every now and then.. mostly just quiet, and mellow though.

Moggycuddler Wed 12-Aug-20 11:41:41

Awful thudding bass noise from nearby houses playing music too loud.

Moggycuddler Wed 12-Aug-20 11:43:24

Nice sound is rain pattering on the windows when you're tucked up in bed in winter, or a storm. And my cats "chirping" to greet me, and purring.

gillybob Wed 12-Aug-20 11:48:57

I love the sound of children's laughter - particularly the unrestrained chuckle that toddlers can make

Oh yes me too Lupin When my toddler granddaughter giggles I wish I cold bottle it for times when I am feeling down. smile

rockgran Wed 12-Aug-20 11:49:14

I've told my husband not to eat an apple near me if I am in a coma. I would still be able to hear him!hmm

Summerfly Wed 12-Aug-20 11:56:11

It has to be early morning birdsong for me. So beautiful, and sitting by a softy flowing stream.

Lilyflower Wed 12-Aug-20 11:59:19

My husband's family clocks, which he winds every Sunday, are lovely. I love the sound of the sea and of wind in trees. The spring dawn chorus is joyous.

Less lovely are: dogs, wind chimes, the snub nosed honking of the local green parakeets which ruin the native birds' chorus, the squawking ungreased axles of the waste collecting trucks and car or house alarms left to run on endlessly.

Ellie Anne Wed 12-Aug-20 12:05:05

I have to leave the room if dh is eating an apple.
And don’t like music blaring out when I am in the garden.
