Do you ask for a receipt?

Surprised as to how many people don’t ask or take their receipt after shopping. How do they balance their monthly /weekly outgoings? What if they needed to take something back?

I'm another one who doesn't ask for receipts unless it is for a large item. As far as being accused of shoplifting I've always thought they can check back for the items you have bought through the till. I haven't balanced my bank statements in over 40 years but quickly check the transactions and my balance on line a few times a week - no need to wait for a statement to arrive.
On the other hand my husband (who worked in finance) likes to have receipts for everything and laboriously ticks off items on his paper bank statement. We have drawer fills of receipts and bank statements that we have to dispose of securely from time to time.

I get a receipt for everything l buy.
As all expenses no matter how small, goes on my credit card, l check them all off every month when l get my statement. How on earth do you know what you are spending, if you don't check?
My memory is not that good!
Also, it means l am constantly being aware of fraud.
Receipts are a no brainer....

I don’t bother with a receipt for small items as for looking back to see how much a loaf of bread was in 1975 why bother It’s not going to make it any cheaper now and anyway I prefer to look forward.

I am in sales maybe that’s why

To those who check statements meticulously against receipts - do you ever find any errors or dodgy withdrawals?

I'm fairly sure I'd spot a fraudulent transaction on my statements, as I don't make all that many payments so it's easy to scan them over.

I've had a card provider check with me about attempted fraud on my card a few times, well before I would have noticed.

I have never worked in accounts, but I have got into trouble with money. I did it by blindly overspending then being surprised when I went overdrawn.

I got into serious trouble. I now know to the penny where I am, and haven't had a credit card for over ten years.

On one of those programmes where celebrities look into their family history Una Stubbs spoke the words of one of her ancestors who never knew" the peace that comes from a settled method of living" and was always in debt.

I only ask for a receipt if there is a guarantee on the goods, othewise I just check on my Bank account on my phone, simple.

Saggi Sat 15-Aug-20 14:06:22

Why are there so many tight fisted and control freak folk out there ?
Spend
Enjoy

Maggiemaybe

Going back a few years, I had several small amounts - something like a couple of £6s, a £4.50, a £7 - taken from my credit card account one month, all coming up on the statement in the name of big companies. My bank said these scammers were getting away with a fortune because most people don’t check their accounts and small sums just go unnoticed.

To those who check statements meticulously against receipts - do you ever find any errors or dodgy withdrawals?

Yes, FarNorth, as I said earlier.

What a strange comment, Jude10. Being in control of your finances hardly makes you tight fisted. In my experience it means you've more left to spend and enjoy.

I do have a friend who rang up her bank because there was a charge on her card statement to a company called Hertown Ski. She knew for sure that she'd bought nothing from a ski company. Just as the bank employee pressed the button to cancel her card, she remembered the skip she'd ordered the previous week from Hertown Skip Hire.

If you use Wallet pay on iPhone your receipts are stored and some stores now send you an electronic receipts. Saves on all those little bits of paper !

If a security guard sees you paying for just a magazine, then heading out with a load of shopping he is only doing his job by checking that you have paid for it. I don’t see any reason to be angry, though I, too, would be mortified at being taken for a possible shoplifter. After all, we are all having to pay extra to cover the huge amount of stealing that goes on.
I tot up my total amount as I put things into my trolley, so have an almost exact figure in my head when I reach the till. If it turns out to be different I will scan my receipt to see what is wrong. I only keep receipts until I have balanced the monthly figures in my account book with those in my internet bank. I also used to work in accounts, and have kept the habit.
Far from being a chore, I enjoy seeing it balance to the last penny (almost always) and the bit of detective work needed if the figures don’t match.

Oh yes, errors on different cc over the years. Happily, they were all sorted out to my satisfaction eventually but the rigmarole on each occasion inspired me to move on. Also, a family member had one of his family drip feed on his card. His own fault, I agree, for sharing his pin but we are talking close family here and also this trusting relative never checked his transactions every month. Just paid up and cleared it. We live and learn indeed.

Agreed with Sagging, Chechen all accounts online daily, have moved to online only account that tells me as soon as I have spent any money. Pay with credit card for anything over £100, debit card for smaller amounts no matter how small.

Rose56 Sat 15-Aug-20 15:30:54

Sorry, Saggi

Use contactless most of the time and do not bother with a receipt. Only get a receipt for large purchases or clothing. We shop once a week so do get a receipt just to make sure we got the special offers etc. Check bank statement monthly online but never had a problem. We tend to use the same shops and petrol stations all the time. Do get receipts when we are on holiday or abroad.

NannyC2 Sat 15-Aug-20 15:46:33

Yes, always get receipts, and like others , check them off monthly against statements. Something I was brought up to do.
Shops do make mistakes and the receipts come in useful so I can get them to correct any errors. I have done this quite often.

Chardy Sat 15-Aug-20 16:24:29

Ever since shops stopped putting things in bags, I always take my receipt

B9exchange Sat 15-Aug-20 16:31:29

Usually take a receipt in case I get stopped on the way out, but only do checking of CC balances when the statement comes in. Most stuff bought on Amazon or supermarket online deliveries, so only small stuff like cards or something forgotten bought in shops - and petrol of course.

Esspee Sat 15-Aug-20 16:39:38

Those of you who tally up all your outgoings, may I ask how much time you spend doing this and what the benefit is to you.
I am careful with money, always have been, but have never calculated my outgoings or checked my receipts. I do keep receipts, until the next time I clear out my handbag and also if a guarantee is involved.

Kim19 Sat 15-Aug-20 16:44:46

Don't tally up my outgoings at all but do check every transaction on cc. Reckon 20 minutes every month when the statement comes in. Don't find it any kind of chore whatsoever and I do have total peace of mind. Horses for courses I guess.

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 16:45:48

I just do a rough rotting up in my head as I'm doing my shopping Esspee; not to the penny obviously, but by the time I've reached the checkout, I have a rough idea of how much I expect the bill to be. Then, if it's more than I'd anticipated, I check the receipt more carefully when I get back to the car. But I work in finance and it comes naturally to me! smile

Chewbacca Sat 15-Aug-20 16:46:38

I do not do rotting up in my head! I do totting up in my head!

Maggiemaybe Sat 15-Aug-20 16:47:49

At the risk of repeating myself (again) Esspee, I spotted fraudulent activity on my account and my bank said that the scammers were growing rich from the many people who never check their accounts.

It takes me five to ten minutes a week.
