Very annoyed at U Turn

I am very annoyed at the government changing their mind yet again this time on the subject of school children wearing masks for moving between areas.

Our children have suffered enough , their risk level is tiny and teachers will be two metres apart whilst teaching them. It is too stressful to do this and be able to have a normal day.

When is Boris going to have enough guts to make his own decisions and stick with them. I’m hopping mad with him, my granddaughter suffers from anxiety and wearing a mask makes her worse. She and her twin are starting in year 7 next week . For goodness sake Boris grow a pair! It does appear as if year 7 might not be included as currently its saying from 12 and I so hope things will improve before their birthday next summer.

The boys around here love them.
Obligatory half mast track trousers, hoods up, and skull masks.

Some children will dislike wearing face masks or will, for various reasons, have problems with them.

However, my 9 year old GD came to visit and had herself packed a face mask in case she needed it. I made her another, which she said she loved. She used it, quite readily, to go into a shop even though it wasn't essential for her to do so.

I think a lot of children, of all ages, will be happy to copy adults or will want to take a responsible attitude. We have to find ways to allow for those children who are unable to cope with them.

Anything that can be done to help us deal with the Covid situation should be taken seriously.

It's more about the risk of it being passed on to people who may have far more serious problems with the virus.

I really hope a close check will be kept on the numbers of cases, and fast action taken, if necessary.

Studies are now showing that children over the age of 12 are not invincible to covid 19 and that there has been an increase in the number of young people suffering from it.

According to the WHO 15% of the cases emerging between late February and mid July were aged between 15 and 24. Prior to late February the number was 4.5%.

Even if the symptoms of young sufferers are relatively mild we do not know the full extent of the after effects. IMO masks should be worn by children aged 12 and over at all schools, not just those in areas of lockdown. I would go further and say that everybody should wear masks whilst in indoor public spaces, including shops, bars etc. This virus is not going away any time soon and, I'm sure that most of you know, it's now on the increase.

Year 7 can be part of a Middle School, which may be classed as Primary.
The advice keeps changing all the time because the nature of this virus in not properly understood, and the prime aim is to keep people safe. Surly that must be the guiding principle ?

JenniferEccles Wed 26-Aug-20 11:56:55

I think it’s sending out the wrong message.

It has been repeatedly stated that it’s perfectly safe for children to return to school, and that in fact it’s essential that they do so, yet now the wearing of face coverings has been brought in.

The teachers’ unions (and probably some teachers themselves) don’t need much encouragement to maintain it’s still not safe.

Luckygirl Wed 26-Aug-20 11:48:37

Not suer it is worth getting "annoyed" about. It is however tedious that the government keeps announcing things then changing their mind. Might be worth taking the proper advice to start with and save all this tatting around.

No problem, so long as you’re wearing a mask grin

I’m fed up of all the criticisms, those who are advising us through the pandemic can’t do right for doing wrong. Yes, they’ve got things wrong, late lockdown, lack of quarantining of returning citizens, no closure of borders, difficulties in care homes, insufficient PPE, and so on, but now we are where we are and we have to move on from here. Whatever we’re advised to do by government, they’re criticised if they do, criticised if they don’t.
At last, we seem to be getting things about right. The wearing or not of masks has been a difficulty because the advise from scientists and WHO was contradictory. Now we are advised to wear a mask whenever possible in indoor spaces, and apparently children, Year 7 and above, should wear a mask in lockdown areas, otherwise it’s up to individual schools to decide.
Sorry, but it’s not rocket science, just follow the guidelines. Simples. Preferably without moaning.

My sons have received detailed guidance on wearing of masks and disposal from the school. Since this started I have put my faith in the school they attend as I know they have my child welfare as a priority, I would no more trust this governments advice on my childs welfare than I would walk naked into Tesco, as I am sure everyone will be relieved to hear.

They are to be worn in local lockdown areas and secondary schools only. So TwiceAsNice year 7 will not have to.

Er, Y7 is secondary

Is there a special exemption for them?

But they only have to wear masks if they are in a local lockdown area, so if that doesn’t apply, they won’t have to wear them.

Secondary schools in non local lockdown areas, mask wearing at discretion of head teacher, or that is how I interpreted the instructions.

Callistemon Wed 26-Aug-20 11:17:49

Yes, they'll be on/off/on/off all day, any germs will be transferred to the face and any other surfaces. Many children will be travelling by public transport - will they need two masks each day?

I think the Welsh CMO said that he did not believe in the usefulness of masks so we will wait to hear the decision of the Welsh Government today.

Franbern Wed 26-Aug-20 11:08:53

Do hope that proper advice and guidance is given to these kids as to the correct method for taking off these masks. Then when they get to classroom what do they do with them? Cram them in a pocket or backpack until the next time they use them.
Not being difficult -but using these in this way, could become a far greater danger of causing the spread of all sorts of virus/bacteria/infection.

Jaxjacky Wed 26-Aug-20 10:52:12

Apologies MaizieD got my school years muddled!

Callistemon Wed 26-Aug-20 10:50:43

TwiceAsNice year 7 will not have to.
Y7 is 1st year of secondary school, at least it is here.

I think I'd better get my sewing machine out again.

Galaxy Wed 26-Aug-20 10:49:52

Yes year 7 is secondary?

All the info re Covid is evolving all the time. It wasn't as if there was a set of exact knowledge somewhere and the Govt was just picking what to adhere to then change their minds from time to time to keep us on our toes.

Sar53 Wed 26-Aug-20 10:44:18

My 11 year old granddaughter is starting in year 7, so it may not apply to her, but she quite happily wears a mask in shops at the moment. She is also asthmatic.
It isn't for the whole day, only to move between classes and in high contact areas.
Advice is changing all the time.
I think Boris is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't at the moment.

TwiceAsNice Wed 26-Aug-20 10:28:04

JaxJacky that is what I’m thinking too, I hope so. Where I am living the number of people who are positive for Covid is extremely low.

I am thinking of other children and not just my own grandchildren.

I do think children with anxiety do “ suffer” in a mask because anxiety can quickly turn to panic which is very distressing. You then have to spend some of the time you should be concentrating in a lesson just trying to calm down enough to listen.

Having worked a long time with children with anxiety it is not a pleasant thing to deal with

tanith Wed 26-Aug-20 10:23:55

My 15yr old GD was planning on wearing a mask if allowed anyway so she’s happy the kids will need masks for travelling to school on public transport anyway or if they pop in a shop. I think he did the right thing, never thought I’d say that lol.

NotTooOld Wed 26-Aug-20 10:19:44

I agree. We, especially the scientists, are all learning about Covid all the time so it should be no surprise when government rulings change. It would be wrong if they did not change.

Charleygirl5 Wed 26-Aug-20 10:07:45

I personally think he did the correct thing. He would have been admonished for it if he had not changed his mind.
