I was told to get rid of the spindly leggy spiders throughout the year so that the big hairy ones don't come looking for them! So I do a spider sweep every evening in the corners of my rooms and use my Lakeland spider catcher to trap them - then I'm afraid they go down the toilet!
This tactic does seem to work. the spindly ones don't move fast and tend to stay on the ceiling so are easy to catch and I haven't seen any fast moving hairy giants yet this year.
I also have a spray from Lakeland which is supposed to deter spiders, I spray it around windows, doors and air bricks - possibly a load of rubbish but I feel better!
