Ironing.

Definitely not an exciting topic, but was wondering how many still iron everything. I used to even iron t towels ye gods. But at the grand age of 68 have been trying to get, away with not ironing everything. My sister never irons her bedding, but for me that is just a step I cannot take. Freshly ironed bedding to me is a lovely sight. But I have been experimenting with smoothing and folding clothes the Kona Marie way. It actually works, when I think of the hours I would spend using the hot, hissy thing ironing every item. I now feel liberated, but still a tad guilty. So my question is do you iron like a demon, or fold and put away.

Until lockdown I sent most of the ironing out to an ironing service. For the last six months I have been doing the ironing myself, I iron everything apart from tea towels and underwear which are dried in the tumble drier. Once I get started I actually find it quite therapeutic.

Ironing is the only household chore I really enjoy. I iron everything according to its label and I even iron tea towels and boxer shorts. I struggle a bit with fitted sheets though grin. Can anybody help ?

I don't iron underwear, tea towels or bedding - I think there's enough to do, without making more work for myself.

I iron shirts, blouses, trousers, t-shirts, dresses, etc., for 3 of us, and when the GC stay, I iron their stuff too

I never iron anything apart from new clothes that have been folded up for ages and delivered to me. They often have very deep creases. There is no reason to iron anything else.

I hardly iron anything anymore, the occasional dress or shirt that’s it. Oh and I have a linen skirt that requires damp ironing if I wear it.

I enjoy ironing because I can think my own thoughts while I do it. I iron pretty much everything.
As for fitted sheets Greenfinch, fold it in half width ways, slipping the corners inside each other. Fold in half again and you will end up with 4 corners inside each other. I iron as I go along.

I love ironing but that’s only because got steam generator flies through the task in mins, but saying that I don’t iron everything, most of these things I’ve bought for last few years don’t really need ironing, just the odd blouse skirts DH work clothes etc

Ellianne Mon 07-Sept-20 17:47:21

It ends up sort of comme ça.

There might be an Anthea Turner video if I remember rightly.

Auntieflo Mon 07-Sept-20 17:55:22

I do as little as possible these days.
When the children were young, and at school, I would listen to a play on the radio, whilst ironing, but not now.
DH irons his shirts.

SueDonim Mon 07-Sept-20 18:27:28

The last time I used my iron I had to dust both it and the ironing board first. grin

BlueBelle Mon 07-Sept-20 18:28:20

Ironing what’s that? Since I don’t have a husbands shirts or kids at school I don’t have anything that needs ironing So very rare to ever iron anything

Lucca Mon 07-Sept-20 18:34:42

I loathe housework, find cooking a chore but quite like/don’t mind ironing. I remember a long time ago I used to have to iron minimum of 17 shirts a week!

Lucca Mon 07-Sept-20 18:35:39

But now I just iron my pillowcases and duvet covers And any of my shirts or dresses which require it

Davida1968 Mon 07-Sept-20 18:41:23

I think that this discussion has arisen a few times before? DH does all our ironing; only ironing those items which really need it. Many of our garments can be hung up after washing, to avoid ironing. And we never iron bed linen, other than a few cotton pillow cases.

TerriBull Mon 07-Sept-20 18:47:45

We split the ironing, I did it all once, but since his retirement my husband does his, I do mine, generally I also do the bed linen, although he's been known to iron a pillow case or two, Don't do fitted sheets, or tea towels, or knickers for that matter, but I have a friend who does grin

Beechnut Mon 07-Sept-20 18:50:35

SueDonim are you my daughter ??

Luckygirl Mon 07-Sept-20 18:58:30

Pillow cases - that's it.

EllanVannin Mon 07-Sept-20 19:06:37

I used to stand for 3 hours at a time ironing everyone's things at one time, even socks and facecloths, everything. I just run over folded towels and tea towels now, sheets and all.
Except my trousers which have to have creases in them.grin

Greenfinch Mon 07-Sept-20 19:14:03

Thanks for the hint Elliane. I will give it a go. I do not have a tumble dryer and there is no way I could send my grandson to school in unironed shirts.

GagaJo Mon 07-Sept-20 19:17:32

I never iron anything. I don't own an iron anymore.

If you hang things carefully and put them away very carefully folded, almost nothing needs an iron.

Yes, smart suit shirts might be the exception. So I never wear them!

watermeadow Mon 07-Sept-20 19:18:34

You’re all living in the past. I don’t think anyone under 50 irons anything, my daughters and husbands never have.
In Lidl they have “Back to Uni essentials” including irons, which made me laugh.

Nana3 Mon 07-Sept-20 19:37:42

I iron to fill the time, I do it slowly. I also iron to do something when the tv is on to stop feeling lazy, I am lazy by the way.

Jaxjacky Mon 07-Sept-20 19:51:03

I don’t iron, my husband irons his shirts, jeans? I exist in t shirts, sweat shirts, jumpers, shorts and jeans. Body heat gets any creases out. Never ironed bedding/towels/tea towels/underwear.

grannysyb Mon 07-Sept-20 20:03:48

I wear quite a lot if linen and have linen sheets , these all definitely need ironing! Why would anyone iron towels I always understood that they weren't as absorbent if they were ironed ?!
