Scam phone call from Australia?

I’ve just had a phone call, which I didn’t answer, with an 00601 code , the answer phone message (Automated ) didn’t identify the sender but said that £79.99 was being taken from my bank account unless I either pressed 1 to cancel or 2 to speak to an adviser.
After a quick check that I didn’t have any annual amounts going out of any of our accounts I’m assuming that had I pressed 1 or 2 my phone bill would have been severely overcharged, as by then I had checked the code and had seen that it was an Australian number.
Beware everybody, they are out there trying to catch us out.

Thanks for the thumbs up Oopsadaisy.

Australia country code is 0061 followed by the district code, ie Sydney is 00612, Melbourne 00613 etc.

It could be a Malaysian number.

Number is
0060122525309

Googled it and can’t find anyone else who has had the call and reported it,
Maybe DH has set up a surprise bouquet of flowers for me each year.

Not likely though

That amount,£79.99 was the amount I was allegedly paying when I got a call last week from India, supposedly Amazon Prime. So persistent when I cut him off he rang back !

Bloomin' rogues.

I know at least four people who have had an automated call about the £79.99 !!

If you go on who called me you can find out where the call was from, has anyone reported it, and you can report it as well.

Apparently it's a mobile phone from Malaysia.

I never answer numbers I don't recognise. If they are genuine, they will leave a message.

Oopsadaisy4 Tue 08-Sep-20 15:35:22

mimimoon they did leave an automated message!

I didn’t answer it because although we have family in Australia it didn’t show their name on the phone screen.

I had a call (? from India) about £79.99 being taken from my bank account. Something to do with Amazon Prime.

AGAA4 Tue 08-Sep-20 16:22:52

I have had the Amazon Prime call several times. They leave a message saying it will be taken from my account. It's a scam.

Yes, the £79.99 sounds familiar - it was an automated message about Amazon Prime, which I don't have. Normally I don't answer unfamiliar numbers, but I was waiting for a call.

Oopsadaisy4 From your last comment you still seem to be under the mistaken belief that the call was from Australia.
It is a Malaysian mobile number.

Callistemon Tue 08-Sep-20 22:05:15

No, it wasn't an Australian code.

Today's call from "Amazon" was another recorded one saying that our iPhone 7 would be delivered soon and that £300-and-something would be taken from "our account" to pay for it. DH hung up.

This is another reason why we do not have our credit card numbers on our accounts (which we use as seldom as possible) and just use gift vouchers to top up. If someone withdraws the £8 or so in either account, they will not get far on it!

One of the reasons why I have a call blocker on my phone!
There is a website called "Who called me?" where you can put in a number and it will tell you if it is a scam - you can report a scam call on there as well.

Posted earlier but it’s gone AWOL!

Calls this week to inform me that my boiler maintenance agreement needs renewing, my washing machine service is overdue, Amazon taking £79.99 almost daily, HMRC are investigating me for fraud and someone is spending £600 on my credit card. Honestly, these scammers must think we’re stupid!

Seems my vehicle tax payment failed and my vehicle is untaxed , sadly I have never owned anything , unless a bike that I got for doing the 11 plus !

Found a message on the phone today saying that unfortunately all their operatives were busy when I answered their call confused but that if I didn't want any more marketing calls from British Gas, I should dial a number starting with 0333.

I hadn't phoned anyone, we don't get marketing calls from British Gas, and I think 0333 numbers may be premium rate ones. Beware!
