Do you take your phone to bed?

As well as the fire risk from having a phone under the pillow, I definitely wouldn't want to have a phone or similar device so close to my head all night, not even occasionally, let alone every single day!

Mine is left downstairs at night, but not charging, except for the occasional oversight when I forget to disconnect the charger

Phone left in living room overnight..we live in a bungalow so would hear the landline in an emergency......kitty be careful...may not be safe to leave your phones charging for so long a time...

Since some idiot cut the land line cables and I needed to call an emergency ambulance, I bought a mobile and now keep it in the bedroom. Would never leave it charging downstairs in case it did catch fire as my dogs sleep in the kitchen and conservatory.

Normal and common. But if you don't want to, fine! Bit snooty to object to out of hours texts though. There are options for the noises various things make.

I never charge my phone at night in case of fire. My mobile charges from my laptop during the day. I have a landline next to bed, so mobile stays downstairs. On the odd occasion I need an alarm. I ask Alexa to wake me at a certain time. She sits next to my bed. She also plays any music to send me to sleep, including radio stations. Amazing lady.

I'm cautious so I like to keep the mobile on the bedside table in case of emergency in the night. I'm scared of burglars so I feel safer with it near me.

I wouldn’t think of going to bed without my iPhone and iPad. In fact, I sometimes watch tv programmes in IPlayer on my IPad. Also, the alarm to wake me is in my iPhone. What on earth would I do without them both?!

I always have my smartphone by my bed on silent , I find it reassuring , I use it to write dreams, in case of illness , emergency etc But, despite it being a brand new Apple I would never leave it charging overnight !!

I never charge mine at night,always in the evening,then I turn it off! However I am next week going to my house in the UK and will be alone, and will then have the phone on in silent mode at night, just in case,but I dont want to be woken by texts, adverts, bogus calls from abroad etc.
Back home later and phone off at night.

Mine charges on my bedside table and is my alarm clock. I set the 'Do Not Disturb' from 10pm to 8am which is only over ridden by alarms or selected contacts such as my daughters numbers.
I do also have my tablet which I use as a tv to watch 'my'programmes, the ones that DH doesn't want to watch. I go to bed early for this reason, and watch tv for an hour or two, usually doing some crochet, before I go to sleep.

I've had middle of the night calls from my overseas family who say: "Sorry pressed the wrong name!" Needless to say I have been delighted rather than upset!

Set your phone to send the messages at a time convenient to him. Many people take their phones to bed. However they programme it to remain silent from a time in the evening to a time in the morning. You can programme to receive messages fro friends/relatives whose numbers you exclude from the silent programme.

Not sure why you can't charge your phone during the day and switch it off overnight . It can't disturb you if it's off.

My latest phone goes to full charge in couple of hours so usually charge in the evening at some stage then switch off overnight. I have extra charger in bedroom. I use tablet with wifi turned off as an alarm if need one. We still have landlines but in distant places in house as too many scam calls at odd times. Main use of latter is to call the mobile to locate same when mislaid!

BIL needs to learn how to use his phone properly. His problem to solve, not yours.

I charge mine upstairs so it’s handy in an emergency like a power cut, but I always remember to put it on silent so I don’t get disturbed.

It has happened every time I have been involved in a Whatsapp groups, one person gets uppity about others sending messages at inappropriate times, until they are gently told to sort out their settings.

Have my phone on bedside cabinet overnight, acts as alarm and also if I need to listen to podcasts music etc, on the odd occasion I can't sleep, it really helps. Would NEVER leave it on charge overnight, upstairs or downstairs, that is a fire risk.
Going off the topic slightly,
The poster who mentioned a bad signal in their village, I also had a bad signal in my house, but have set the phone to make and receive all calls through the Wi-Fi, while in the house, and that is so much better. Hope that helps!

How many emergencies have people had prior to the mobile phone being an "essential"? Some situations may be considered more urgent than others but emergencies, very rare. If my phone is upstairs it is switched off. Only takes about 30 mins to fully charge so can be done when awake. I still have a landline so that is another source for contact in an emergency. DH is hearing impaired and mobile is useless for him anyway.

Suggest to your BIL that he puts his phone on airplane mode; the alarm still works, but all incoming messages are blocked.

Just wondered how many cases there have actually been of modern smartphones catching fire whilst charging in a properly ventilated area? Anybody got any genuine figures?

Most modern smart phones automatically switch to Do Not Disturb when placed faced down. Problem sorted simply wherever you are.

I charge my phone during the day as and when it is needs charging, and leave it downstairs at night. However, after reading this thread I will now turn it off and take it up to bed with me in case of an emergency (if I remember....!)
We have a landline extension in one of our spare bedrooms so we can be contacted during the night and, as someone has already said, this has meant two sad calls when my FiL and BiL passed away.

My mobile is near me always, and in the bedroom at night. However, it automatically switches to ‘no calls’ at 10pm, and back on at 7am, except for my daughter who can always contact me.
I have a self-imposed rule that I don’t use any devices (phone, tablet, laptop) after 9pm.

My phone stays in the lounge whilst I am in bed. It is only charged when I am awake, I would never charge it anywhere in the house whilst I am asleep. That's what comes of having been married to a fireman!!!
