What would you buy/do?

When someone wins a large amount of money on the Lottery, Camelot advises them to take time to get over the shock. They've also discovered that people who have always struggled or been careful with money (which is most of us) find it difficult to spend more than they're used to...almost a sense of guilt. So Camelot advise them to buy themselves something (not gifts for others) that they would never have dreamed of buying in the past. This is to get them used to the idea that they can spend money on themselves and not just on others.

If you won the lottery and followed this advice what would you buy/do? Remember it can't be gifts for others. It has to be for you or you and your partner.

I'd like to go to the zoo and have a tapir grooming session while I consider my options, please.

Now why doesn't this surprise me MissA? grin

hollysteers

I would buy a flat in Paris. Such a dream, Parisian life ?

Considering life here at the moment maybe we could swap for a few weeks!?

I'd love a model train set. If I was a bit younger I'd consider roller skates because they look fun. I'd probably break a bone if I gave them a go now.

Ooh, and a Donkey

A cautionary tale: Anybody remember Edith Adams?

Against all odds, New Jersey native Evelyn Adams, won the lottery in back-to-back years — 1985 and 1986 — for a grand total of $5.4 million. (That's about $16 million in today's money.)

Feeling lucky, and rightfully so, she took her extra cash to the tables and slot machines in Atlantic City.

She pushed her luck. As of 2016, she was penniless and residing in a trailer park after gambling it all away.

Money can't but you happiness, but it can buy you two return tickets on The Orient Express from London to Venice. It won't happen though, I have never done the lottery.

Evelyn not Edith, must have been thinking of 'Allo 'Allo.

I would love to see the Aurora, possibly in the southern part of Argentina, Ushuaia perhaps, the Galapagos islands and finally do the Silk Road... I’d take my grandson with me because he’s unlikely to ever travel, and his uncle as he’s the most travelled and interesting companion on such a journey.
if anything is left, a small flat for my eventual dotage/widowhood.

I'd love a house on the coast and my own cat sanctuary.

If I won a LOT of money, I'd hire a chef, chauffeur and a cleaner!!

For myself I'd have a few days with a friend being pampered and fed healthy tasty food. A few facial treatments and massages too.

All this before the BIG SHOP AND GIVEAWAY?

I'd buy a flat in London so that my son could live there. He's a freelance musician who has really struggled and yet needs to be in London to be able to undertake such work as there is to be had. He'd never accept a flat as a gift but if it was mine and I asked him to flat sit... At least it would take care of his housing costs.

I would also employ a cleaner and a gardener! Apart from that I'd buy a second home by the sea. It would be big enough for all the family. I might even stretch to staff to change the beds and clean when we'd gone home.

Mmm, I often fantasise about this! I'd love to buy a pretty cottage with roses round the door.
I expect that would be considered a bit mundane by Camelot but I really don't want a sports car or a helicopter, designer gear or a fancy bag - they're just 'things' aren't they? You don't need that sort of nonsense, do you?

Buy a flat in London , have a cleaner and a cook here at home
Move into a one level house and have a hydropool out the back .

On not shallow I would like to fund some of those drive around laundries for the homeless. There are also ones with showers for them .

A yacht and learn how to sail it

Happysexagenarian Sun 11-Oct-20 09:47:34

I (We) have pretty much all we need. But I would splash out on a new sewing machine. I've been googling them and the one I'd love to have is £10,000!!! Would also buy DH a new car, perhaps electric. But its never likely to happen because we don't do the lottery ?

Foxglove77 Sun 11-Oct-20 09:49:06

I've always wanted a cottage in the New Forest. I dont want to move now so it could be a family holiday home. I would splash out on a new front door, triple glazing and thick plush carpets throughout our current home.

A round the world trip

Bathsheba Sun 11-Oct-20 09:56:42

Definitely a new house, in a quiet location, but in the same general area where I live now. It would have huge windows to let in lots of light. There would be a heated swimming pool and a summer house in the grounds garden. A new car, but nothing too fancy, as long as it is reliable and comfortable.

Oh, and a gardener/handyman and a cleaner would also be on my shopping list smile

TrendyNannie6 Sun 11-Oct-20 09:57:57

I would buy plot of land and have a chalet bungalow built, ( did this before many years ago with ex husband)had a house before! Obviously it would depend on how much I’d won, have a couple of guard dogs as we have always had, indoor swimming pool, oh and a Range Rover,

Purplepoppies Sun 11-Oct-20 09:59:07

Well if I won it now it would be a little late. I wanted to have a place near mum so I could care for her ?
I have never owned my own home so would buy a place where I am and probably still buy somewhere where I'm originally from as I have family and friends there still.

henetha Sun 11-Oct-20 10:00:38

Obviously I'd buy a house, and employ help etc.
But the very first thing I would buy is a new sofa. I have to spend parts of each day lying flat and my sofa is getting saggy,
(a bit like me really!). So, yes, a good quality new sofa.

Phloembundle Sun 11-Oct-20 10:01:06

Bungalow somewhere rural, then nice teeth.

Moggycuddler Sun 11-Oct-20 10:05:40

If it was a huge amount of money - a perfect house. And I'd like to own a cat rescue. And (since we don't drive) a nice car and a chauffeur to be on call 24/7 to run us wherever we might ever want to go.

DotMH1901 Sun 11-Oct-20 10:07:37

I would buy some land (with planning permission to build houses on) along the coastline and then build a small close of houses for myself and family to use. I'd live there full time as I really miss being by the sea! I have spent a big lottery win so many times - helping family and friends would be a big part of it too.
