What decade were your grandparents born?
Desperately sad story of the assisted suicide of a grieving mother
They say a picture paints a thousand words and there have been some lovely photos on GN recently. I am a visual person and, especially at this time, pictures cheer me up. Autumn scenes, people's gardens, cake baking, craftwork, pets, clothes we fancy buying etc. Even stock images of Boris, royalty etc.
What is the general feeling? Are they superfluous or do they add another dimension? Are we "allowed" to just drop them into a non photographic thread?
More beautiful images, marvellous! That teasel looks so real, lisagran and I do love a sunset!
Here’s one nan with no dog, on what turned out give a rather muddy walk this morning!
No nans just a man!!

Such a wonderful story Spangler - does the jukebox still work?
QuoteUrmstongran Thu 22-Oct-20 08:26:57
I loved your story Spangler!

^I love it too.
It reminds me of a cafe in town long ago where the teenagers used to gather on Saturday mornings. It was the “cool” place to
be seen.
Is it working now you have it Spangler ?^
What lovely complimentary remarks, thank you, all of you, it's much appreciated. The JukeBox does still work, it's valve technology so when you switch it on you have to wait a few minutes for the valves to warm up. Who remembers having a wireless or TV that was much the same?
A leafy corner of Powys.
December sunset over Connaught Water.
We saw this bronze in the grounds of the Noordbrabant Museum, 's-hertogenbosch. There was no indication anywhere of what it was intended to represent but I liked it!
Haha? love that onion Lisa ( I feel sorry for it being thrown away)
Greyduster, that's lovely; it brought a smile to my face, too.
I am so enjoying seeing everyone’s beautiful and varied images.
Spent a couple of hours at some local gardens today, Despite intermittent drizzle enjoyed the last bursts of summer, autumn shades and a bit of modern art thrown in for good measure. Apparently it’s representing growth, separation and the umbilical cord!
Heavens grannyqueenie, that bit of artistic licence reminded me more of an artistic (rhymes with curd). Never have managed to appreciate art.
Yes Alima I agree with that description - I always think most modern art is a case of the kings new clcothes if you see what I mean?
?
Alima.. that’s just what I thought...they say beauty is in the eye of her beholder!!
Beautiful photos of Powys and Connaught water Scribbles. And that bronze is intriguing isn't it? Don't think I'd go as far as to say I like it, but it interests me!
And yes, I have to agree with Alima's description of gq's sculpture
The title of this thread, "1000 words," is clever in that it implies a picture is worth a 1000 words.
When I was asked what the letters MG meant on my old car I said that maybe they mean My Girlfriend. Well her name is Jessica, here's not exactly a 1000 words:
There was a time when motor cars
were serious fun to drive,
back then they didn't have seat belts,
which help you stay alive.
They had quirky things like
running boards and trafficators too,
those were little semaphore arms
that gave the direction true.
Jessica is just like that
in two tone fancy colour,
an MG of classic vintage,
a real beauty to discover.
There's nothing more that she prefers
than to show off in the shining sun,
and be photographed by one and all:
she smiles for everyone.
This classic car has survived the years
and not been torn asunder,
not for her, the breaker's yard,
her body parts to plunder.
Despite her years she's greatly loved,
her lines to be admired,
and she can still put on a turn of speed
to get the adrenaline fired.
Out on the highway she likes to go
and keep up with the traffic.
But serious problems can arise,
when all the cars are static.
The water in her engine boils
and out the steam comes hissing,
she doesn't have a temperature fan
but it's not exactly missing.
It simply wasn't ever there
like modern cars today,
there's so much missing with vintage cars,
it's the price you have to pay.
But for all her lack of equipment
and of technology,
there's something intangible this car has,
this lovely old MG.
It's that distinct smell of old car,
of walnut and of leather,
a fragrance that's so captivating,
it doesn't get much better.
Then there's her style & grace & beauty
and class in overload,
but her greatest asset is the fun you can have,
that comes by the bucketload.
Love the car, Spangler! I can almost smell the well-nourished leather seats from here.
More statuary. This one's in the grounds of Bolsover Castle..
Icicles melting on my neighbour's windowledge.
The Liver Building on a very moody day.
Over a week of pictures on GN and lots of great photos still coming!
So many interesting subjects. Thank you!
Great idea for a thread Ellianne. Here's a few from my neck of the wood, The New Forest.
Oh Spangler those pictures melt my heart!
