Buying a turkey!

I’ve found in recent years fresh turkeys and turkey crowns are plentiful in Tesco in the last 5 days before Christmas. I always give in to my turkey anxiety and buy a fresh crown a few weeks early and freeze it. Then I kick my self when I see the shelf stacked full in the last week.

Tesco usually have great deals on beef roasting joints from Dec 20th. The past few years their beef joints have been on half price offer £6 a kilo. I bought one last year and it was delicious

I have a frozen turkey crown, delivered last week in my freezer and a whole fresh turkey on order for Christmas week from Ocado. Also got a lovely fillet of beef in the freezer. I think that’s us covered!

Sainsbury’s and Tesco have both got frozen Turkey Crowns at the moment. I’ve added one to my order.

Reminiscing, half a frozen turkey at Christmas and the other half at Easter. The RAF flew in one for each family so the cantonment butcher used a circular saw for the smaller units. We were only 4 for Christmas lunch including hosting the Catholic padre. Nepalese cook did a wonderful job.

I mentioned to Orlin last week that there’ll only be the two of us to please this year so let’s choose a favourite meal each.
Looks as though we’re having egg and chips for Christmas Day and my choice, roast beef on Boxing Day.

We bought a frozen medium sized bronze turkey in this weeks supermarket order. I have often bought frozen turkeys as much cheaper than fresh and providing you defrost and cook it properly it is just as good. I will use all leftovers in some creative meals to freeze for later.
I always lift the skin on the breast and force butter under it before cooking. Also, much to my ex-MIL's disgust I cut off and bone and stuff the legs before cooking (slices beautifully) I use sage and onion stuffing in legs and an apricot/sausagemeat etc stuffing in the breast. Yum!

I’ve got a frozen turkey crown in my Sainsburys online basket for delivery next week. Oddly, they didn’t show up when I searched for “turkey crown”, but there were loads on offer in the Christmas section. We don’t eat much meat so I usually buy free range, but I just feel I want to be prepared this year for whatever we end up doing.

I've frozen a large fresh chicken, just in case. I'm not sure yet who's coming anyway. It could be just me, so the chicken would be enough if so.

i always buy one of the roast from frozen ones only 3 or 4 for Christmas dinner (can't be bothered with all the make sandwiches then a curry) always moist and delicious

LauraNorder. Egg and chips! Yum! You can’t beat it. I’m having Christmas dinner in our ‘bubble’ with my DD and GD’ this year, so I doubt that we will be having turkey. None of us are fond of it. DD likes beef, but my preference is roast pork. The leftovers make lovely sandwiches too.
I have fond memories of ordering our Christmas meat from the butcher at our local outdoor market, and collecting it on Christmas Eve. The market is now just a sad memory - killed off, after around 200 years, by our modern shopping methods.

When I was a child my maternal grandparents posted us a fresh turkey from their small farm in rural Ireland every year. Wrapped up in layers of brown paper and tied with string. Then sent through the post! It often arrived with the paper damp and starting to tear. But amazingly we never ever had food poisoning.

The local butcher charged my Mum a nominal amount to store it for the remaining few days before Christmas as we didn’t have a fridge.

M&S was selling turkeys online to feed around 8 people for a mere £90. I could not believe the price.

I prefer turkey legs but cannot buy them anywhere so it maybe fish or duck- I really do not mind.

Aldi it wouldn't surprise me one bit, my DD and I are sharing a large meat hamper from our local butcher including turkey crown/beef/porkloin/chipalatas/bacon&eggs/stuffing balls/large chicken/cooked ham all for £75.00 he will delivery for me on 23rd .

Asda always seem to have fresh turkey legs

DH does not like the forever with turkey, so we normallyhave had rib of beef cooked in red wine - delicious, and as has been said, there are plenty of ways of using it up after.

I ordered a turkey fillet from the butcher yesterday. It will feed 8 but of course we don't know if anyone can come. I am resigned to freezing it if there are just going to be two of us.

Morrisons sell turkey legs for less than a Fiver throughout the year! Not always in though - Morrison's butchery staff told me they butcher them on a Tuesday to sell breast slices, dice and mince, but the leg meat is less popular. I don't know why, it is the most flavoursome part! I roast the leg, which will do loads of meals, and use the bones for a delicious stock.

Last year I had a Free Range / Organic / Corn Fed Chicken from ASDA ........................ bought for the grand price of £5.00 on 'Whoopsie' - and frozen as soon as I got it back home!

Our local fruit and veg shop usually get fresh turkeys in to order, have you got one local? This year hubby is on pureed food so I won't even bother buying one just for myself.

It will just be DH and me for Christmas dinner this year, so it won't be turkey. He wants lamb with saffron and pomegranate, which sounds exotic but is an Asda recipe. It's nice (and easy!) and I will serve it with pilau rice. Can't say that I shall miss having to cook a turkey. I am always anxious that the damn thing won't be done when everything else is ready.

Decided to do beef this year and it's bought and in the freezer. I live on my own and tend to eat a lot of chicken throughout the year so I'm looking forward to beef joint on Xmas Day. Making a pavlova for pudding as it nice and light.

Bluecat I also used to worry about timings for turkey cooking but life is so much easier since I tried Mary Berry’s tip of cooking it up to 2 hours before you want it, letting it rest on a large platter and cover it with several layers of foil. Then pile a large clean folded towel on top to keep it hot. It will sit there very happily and keep perfectly hot while you turn up the oven for the potatoes, pigs in blankets etc. Also enables you to start making the gravy nice and early and wash up the big roasting dish. ?

Sainsburys have them, our on line turkey crown was delivered last week.

My turkey crown has been in the freezer for a month. Who knows what will happen this Christmas. At least we will have Christmas dinner.

Local butcher for my hamper containing turkey crown, beef, pork and gammon plus I'll ask for two turkey legs as well for DH!
