Fanny; How could I? At 4.30am on a cold Jan. morning you must have looked as radiant as ever, but I must admit my hot steak and mushroom pie looked very tempting in its own way,
I'll make a note to imagine you tomorrow because the chish and fips shop is always closed on Mondays.
Btw. Dinner was sweet potato cottage pie, Yum!

Hope that everyone has had a good day and is now sleeping soundly.
I don't think that I've mentioned this before - my parents and I had pet Tawny Owls?
I did an 'Ask me Anything' on Mumsnet about them.

Hi Fanny. Im awake ?. Had a good run of sleep recently but tonight is useless. Pet owls! How tame were they? Sounds amazing. The nearest I’ve come to a tawny was in an art class at school. One of the pupils brought in a deceased ‘model’ found on her farm!

They were very tame, especially with my mom. They'd sit on your shoulder. They lived in an aviary in the garden. Sometimes one would 'escape', but they always came back after a bit of a fly around.

Pet Tawny Owls? That’s unusual.. I’ve seen a few around here but never thought they could be a domestic animal.
How many did you have? What did you feed them?

Okay! I'll tell you the tale
I'll do it in parts, chiefly because I keep losing posts! Feel free to chip in!

It was when my mom was pregnant with me (1971) and her and my dad were on holiday in Wales. It was a dark evening and they were driving on the motorway and my mom saw a cardboard box on the side of the road with two pairs of yellow eyes inside.
She thought they were kittens. So they drove miles to turn round to go and rescue the kittens, but they were two baby owls!

So they bought them home (now there's a blind spot here - I'm not sure how they looked after them if they were on holiday? Perhaps it was just a day trip? I'll ask my dad...)

Home was a very average 70s new build semi by the way, not a country manor.
The plan was that the owls would go to live at nearby Dudley zoo, but in the meantime they lived in the bedroom that was to be mine. My parents took up the carpet and removed the curtains and put on old tree in the bedroom for them. The window faced the road so anyone passing would have seen them hopping about.

That’s amazing FC. You were a ‘Harry Potter’ before it was even thought of.
I’m awake checking DH is breathing. He fell today whilst we were walking and though he seemed OK I worry.

Oh Molly I really feel for you
I do that with mine. Sometimes I even wake him up a little bit to check if I can't hear anything.
Why do you think that he fell?

Hi Kim, lions, that's an interesting one. It's fascinating what children latch onto isn't it. Owls and cats do have some similarities.
I'm quite surprised that we haven't heard from Rufus yet, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make an appearance now that you are here, I think that he has a soft spot for you!
I will do my next Owl Story installment tomorrow I think.

Sorry, I can't help here. The only "tawny" I know is "Mulligatawny", as in soup (guaranteed to keep you awake), which reminds me; haven't had my lunch yet; cold roast chicken plus extras.

Sleeping very well here, especially since I bought a weighted blanket.

Still, a long afternoon nap means a four hour 'night time' is quite enough. So, a morning lark rather than a night owl.

I took the dog out for a trot around the garden at 4am - on her lead, of course, to prevent the barking. It's lovely and quiet at this time of day.

Hello Hetty I've looked into weighted blankets in the past. I can't really get my head around them, if you know what I mean, I don't know whether I'd like the sensation or not.
My dog has been a very good girl tonight - no barking!

I was enjoying your story about the owls Fanny - now I shall have to make sure I'm awake tomorrow night for the next instalment! I'm awake now with the dreaded itching and stinging of eczema, so I don't really wish that on me tomorrow! Never had eczema in my life before, but I suppose in old age in the middle of a pandemic is as good a time as ever to start!

Back to the owls. I was on a Highland Safari a few years ago and there was a talk about owls with a beautiful live (and naughty!) pet one there for us to stroke. It's feathers were amazingly soft to the touch - just beautiful. There now, I'd forgotten all about that - thanks for the memories.

Fanny You're still restless at 4.00am , I see! What's the matter? Feeling guilty about something or was it something you ate?
Of course I have a "soft spot" for Kim because she appreciates my choice of wholesome lunch menus and doesn't issue dire warnings or criticisms of what I eat!
Forgot to mention, soup was mushroom with added croutons.

Morning Fanny and all. I’ve been asleep but woke up remembering I had to amend my food order. Couldn’t get it out of my mind so got up to sort it out, now I’m awake.
