Rather pay than give in

Personally I would rather UK left EU without a deal than give up our freedom. We can avoid buying French food and wine, on the wholecwe drink new world wines anyway.
British cheeses are just as good.

As for travel, we all managed before freedom of movement and can easily go back.

The thought of caving into europe and their desire to annexe uk fills me with horror

Just a side issue. On the news last night examples were given of items that would be more expensive to import. They seemed an odd choice. Mince and cheddar cheese. Surely we produce them ourselves? I do think the media are scrambling around looking for doom and gloom stories as usual as nobody wants good news.
Is there any good news about Brexit? Honest enquiry.

Callistemon Fri 11-Dec-20 12:46:35

cheddar cheese
Well, you couldn't make it up! ?

The cheddar cheese I see in the shops all seems to be produced in the UK anyway.
Just checked - Cornwall, Somerset and Wales (including some from Snowdonia).
We seem to have rather a lot of cheese in the fridge.

Think you’ll find the ba news outweighs the good. The only people to benefit from no deal will be those who gamble on currencies . The £ will sink.

Callistemon Fri 11-Dec-20 12:51:50

“The UK currently exports about 70,000 tonnes of cheddar. In a hard Brexit situation, not all of that 70,000 tonnes would be exported, which no doubt would open up opportunities for the Irish.”

I dont think we should worry about not being able to import Cheddar, but should be concerned about exporting dairy products to the EU.
www.thegrocer.co.uk/the-dairymen/after-eu-can-uk-dairy-still-go-global/650435.article

We imported some Cheddar cheese:
Cheddar saw the largest year on year decrease in imports, down 60% (7,485 tonnes) on February 2019 to 4,984 tonnes.

I objected to the smearing of two Labour politicians by association with another, who had been arrested (not charged) with serious offences. I was told that the poster knows more than I do because she's from the area, whereas her current knowledge is no more than second-hand.

Those are the facts. Carry on disputing, if you like, but I'm not interested.

Oh dear, pots and kettles.
Your own knowledge was also secondhand.
Deuce.

I do not love in a holiday or retirement expat colony- I speak the language, and I read the Press and watch local TV.

I can assure you that the mood has changed, massively. Breaking the Law to renege on the Withdrawal Agreement was the last straw- when people realised Johnson and ERG had no intention of negotiating honestly.

It is not about 'knowing best' - but about the facts.

It is clear now that Johnson promised a No Deal to his bakers and the ERG before he was elected. Also clear now that he behaved abominably with Mrs Von der Leihen and colleagues on their last meeting- coming in all guns blazing and making very derogatory comments about the French and Barnier.

No Deal was always the plan for the ERG and Tory backers- because of the European Tax Directive. Making lots of noise about fish is just nonsense. And the recent 'the overn ready Deal' was about the WA - is nonsense, and so is the smoke screen for No Deal, by calling it Australian styles, again pure sonsense.

I think you quoted the wrong post! It referred to growstuff/Andy Burnham/Urmstongran smile
However....
What evidence do you have that eg GrandmaFrench after 20 I think years in France lives (or loves ! ) in a retirement or an ^ex-Pat colony is not entirely fluent in French and conversant with the contents of the local and National papers? Presumptuous or what?
The President of the European Commission is in fact Frau Ursula von der Leyen - I would have expected with your intimate knowledge of all things EU , that you would get her name right.
Don’t you see that nobody is contradicting your personal opinion, if only you would recognise it as such and not attempt to lecture or preach to the rest of GN as if you were the sole fount of all wisdom?

No sneering by MawBe just stating the obvious it is Biba70 who constantly tells that she knows what the whole of the EU and expats think, dismissing all other posters who have equal knowledge.

Callistemon Fri 11-Dec-20 13:04:22

Read the whole thread, Luckylegs

MawBe Fri 11-Dec-20 13:04:23

Luckylegs

Would it be at all possible for Mawb to comment about ANYTHING without sneering and putting people down? It’s very wearying to read on so many threads.

Woukd you like to point me towards these many threads ,Luckylegs ?
If it makes you feel better to take a pot at me, because you are having a bad day , feel free, flowers but I thought we weren’t meant to personally attack other members.

Callistemon Fri 11-Dec-20 13:12:48

I dont think it is MawB who is sneering as you put it, Luckylegs.

It seems that we in the UK are being sneered at, called names and lectured about our misdeeds.

Even those who voted to remain, do not live in England, have been accused and called names.

Enough is enough.

petra Fri 11-Dec-20 13:14:57

All I have to say about MawBe's posts is: I love them ?

Luckylegs Fri 11-Dec-20 13:15:27

I hope you make sure you remember the rule about not personally attacking other members then, MawB.

Lucretzia Fri 11-Dec-20 13:18:23

MawBe sneering? As if.

Fake news!

Nannan2 Fri 11-Dec-20 13:22:08

Maybe we shouldnt have jumped so readily into it in first place- it was 'the common market' then- was that the conservatives too?!

Nannan2 Fri 11-Dec-20 13:24:21

What do they think we did BEFORE we joined it? We still visited other countries- we still traded with them! We didn't give them hefty amounts of cash just for the privilege!

boodymum67 Fri 11-Dec-20 13:30:53

I just wish we could go back to feet and inches and pounds and ounces...never got to grips with cms and kilos.

Marydoll Fri 11-Dec-20 13:37:53

Luckylegs, Could you please supply some evidence of Mawbes' sneering.

I for one enjoy her well informed and interesting posts. I don't see any name calling nor sneering. However......

Kalu Fri 11-Dec-20 13:40:20

That was uncalled for Luckylegs. MawBe certainly isn’t the poster you should be accusing of sneering and put downs.

I get that we struggle a bit with metric etc but I wouldn’t wish feet inches etc on today’s children !

No, we won't.
Although distances are still in miles.

I agree Lucca. But then again as a remainer half german I probably wouldwink

GillT57 Fri 11-Dec-20 14:07:40

This is a nasty bullying thread, and some of you need to have a good read back at what you have posted, it is like a pack of wolves circling a few posters and picking up and misinterpreting everything they post. At the risk of putting myself in the firing line; I think that this bloody brexit business and our lying incompetent of a PM has made such behaviour suddenly acceptable. What a country this has become. Shameful.

Jane10 Fri 11-Dec-20 14:56:12

Not in the firing line from me. I suppose I'm just in the 'well we're out so will just have to make the best of it camp.' No point going on and on about it. That won't change a thing and just works people up (no names no pack drill!).
We managed outwith the EU and we will again. The EU are having to be seen to be tough as several other countries are eyeing a way out. Poland being the latest I see.
