The changing face of Gransnet?

(1001 Posts)
ixion Sat 30-Jan-21 14:42:20

I am a 'lockdown-joiner' to this forum, welcoming the opportunity join in with others who are similarly 'shut inside'.

I have been wondering whether people have found that the site has changed in any way over the last year?

Themes/quantity of posts/membership/patience/tolerance?

Just curious!

Well ixion, has your curiosity been satisfied now? grin

What a can of worms has been opened by your timely question.

In the early days Geraldine, Justine and Cari were all very ‘present ’ on the threads and a lot of posts that would be disallowed now, with a severe warning, went completed unremarked back then. However, there have always been contentious threads on GN. See the links below for examples:

Thank you, yes!
It was an eye-opener to see the kind of interaction there was, at one time, with the Moderators!
I hadn't realised.......

Mine too!
The mods seemed to have a very light touch back in the day!
?
And joined in the banter.

There was quite a bit of interaction on the threads with the mods in the early days and some very feisty exchanges between certain posters. As a newbie to forums I was initially fairly shocked at how, for want of a better word, impolite, some posters were. Yet seeing people being so direct did actually do away with the need to wonder if people were being genuine. grin

MissA ?

kittylester Tue 02-Feb-21 17:38:54

Exactly what ga said!!

And, the moderators were lovely and did join in. Cari even asked me for a recipe.

ixion Tue 02-Feb-21 17:42:09

What's the turnover like in Moderators over the years? Do leavers say farewell and new ones introduce themselves?

Urmstongran Tue 02-Feb-21 17:49:11

My that was quick .... the mods have deleted my post as I requested.

dragonfly46 Tue 02-Feb-21 17:51:26

Mias Adventure I suppose it depends what you say!

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 17:53:15

Well, we will have to agree to disagree on that point, dragonfly.

JenniferEccles Tue 02-Feb-21 17:53:28

Isn’t there a place on Gransnet for the more eccentric amongst us, like FH for instance?

I much prefer somebody like her rather than one or two other cruel hoaxers who have taken people in in a particularly nasty way in the past.

moggie57 Tue 02-Feb-21 17:54:46

more people/more topics/ nasty comments removed .link back to earlier thread ..

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 17:55:48

That's the point.
There is a place for everyone.
If reading a thread by a particular poster goads people, then it makes sense to steer clear.
Not continue to fill up a thread with comments and then complain you've been goaded!

HAZBEEN Tue 02-Feb-21 17:59:07

Jennifer Eccles you obviously were not on the receiving end of one of that posters PMs or even on site posting. People that were will recognise that anything Maw or even some of the other posters who have left was mild by comparison.
Anyway I do agree with you there is room on GN for all types, my point was if posters are accepting of others who do not agree with them things would be fine. My other reason for comparing that poster was the inconsistancy in Moderation here.

Urmstongran Tue 02-Feb-21 18:07:24

Whilst I agree MissA sometimes when a poster becomes particularly provocative, it takes a bigly amount of self-discipline not to react! It goes through ones’ mind ‘do you think I’m that daft?’. By not posting back, the irritating sod is given free rein to “la, la, la’ believing yes, we are mugs.

I have learnt, pretty much, to sit on my hands.
Ooh ... it’s not easy!

Leokitty Tue 02-Feb-21 18:10:51

Yogagirl was reported and has been banned for life after one warning

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 18:11:45

It's not easy, I know, but I remember trying to steer the conversation towards friendly and accepting, and the thread being filled up with other people, who then caused the problem.

janeainsworth Tue 02-Feb-21 18:14:41

Leokitty that was presumably after Yogagirl posted a link to a hate-filled video full of anti-vax misinformation and other conspiracy theory stuff.

I apologise if I’m wrong, but aren’t you Yogagirl’s daughter?

LauraNorder Tue 02-Feb-21 18:14:52

How can we know, I haven’t come across Yogagirl, I don’t think so can’t judge but no one should be banned unless they’ve broken the law of the land.

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 18:16:46

The same goes for all posters.
Not ones who annoy other users, or use the quote button in the "wrong way" or flounces.

Fennel Tue 02-Feb-21 18:16:57

I once joined a forum, one of the many french expat ones, (where I had 'met biba but she wasn't on this one) where most of the members had been banned from other forums.
It was unmoderated and went quite well for some time. Even with all the rebels.
It would be interesting if the warned and banned Grans started their own forum. wink.

Urmstongran Tue 02-Feb-21 18:17:30

I know what you mean MissA as ‘friendly and accepting’ is a great concept. In theory. However, certain individuals abuse that generosity of spirit as let’s face it, they are wind up merchants and, left unchallenged their posts become ever more goady to provoke a response. That’s the point where I would wish GNHQ would step in ... and delete posts by the OP‼️

GagaJo Tue 02-Feb-21 18:18:12

That is a load of rot LN. This site is privately owned. If Trump can be banned from Twitter, any of us can be banned from Mumsnet.

The owner of the site decides who stays and who goes.

MissAdventure Tue 02-Feb-21 18:19:15

You can't change others' behaviour.
Only your response to it, so "they" say.

Urmstongran Tue 02-Feb-21 18:20:35

Gosh Fennel that would be verbal fireworks indeed!
? ?

Fennel Tue 02-Feb-21 18:22:19

ps it could be called Big Bad Grans .

baubles Tue 02-Feb-21 18:24:10

Cari came to along one of our early meet-ups, perhaps in Edinburgh if my memory doesn’t deceive me.
