That is correct trisher. I went for a private consultation but then had to join the NHS queue at the bottom for treatment, like starting over again.
I have heard others get themselves in quicker though. It probably depends on the consultant and the urgency.

For many years I enjoyed private health insurance and life insurance courtesy of the company I worked for. I was management, but exactly the same package was given everyone, from the youngest member of the company upwards. Strangely I do not recall any employees, including those who were avid union members, objecting to using this, and none of us could be regarded as rich.

My SiL became critically ill a few years back, they had private healthcare and she was seen via that, when it came time for her to need ICT she went straight into an NHS bed. Emergency medicine is a different thing, and will always be provided on a priority care not wealth basis.

Even so, it is possible to pay for private care via NHS hospitals.

People have had to wait for treatment, I'm one of them, but I don't resent people receiving emergency care. Even 99 year old princes.

More likely I’d wish I still had the money to go private-and they do indeed do private procedures in NHS hospitals as well as the other way round.

If you’re an emergency patient you get NHS emergency treatment whoever you are. I think we can safely conclude that Prince Philip was an emergency patient. He was a patient in another hospital, it was realised he needed an emergency heart procedure (probably another stent or stents) and he was moved as any other patient would have been. I have no objection to any citizen of the UK receiving NHS treatment.

Note I said person not citizen or resident, because that would apply to anyone physically in this country who needed treatment.

It’s wonderful to see that the NHS remains excellent when emergency care is needed. I’ve no problem with PP being transferred from a private to an nhs hospital for the treatment he needed.
The NHS is a cradle to grave service, free at the point of need. I only wish we had a government prepared to invest properly in the nhs and it’s staff.

Rosie51 in your dreams ....can you personally tell me of any one of his age getting that sort of treatment on the NHS? It doesn't happen the elderly are not considered a priority for surgery if they were in hospital for any length of time they would be called bed blockers and chucked out into care homes...hence the deaths in care homes at the start of the pandemic

paddyanne Yes I can. My grandmother aged 96 had an emergency hip replacement after a fall. Shame nobody had diagnosed the ulcer she had so she died, in hospital, when that started a terminal bleed.

Rosie51 hip surgery is standard in people however old they are. It's because the process is now so quick and easy it causes less trauma than leaving a fractured hip. Many old people died after hip fractures in the past when the operation was in its infancy. Emergency heart treatment for older people is not so standard.
I don't suppose anyone waiting in A&E for hours, or waiting for an ambulance in central London would view the emergency treatment given to one patient transferred from a private hospital to an NHS bed and treated immediately as equal.

trisher the operation on my grandmother was at least 30 years ago. A&E triage so you are seen in order of need. Many people get upset when those that came in after them are seen before, complaining of unfairness. That you not only hate the RF but consider those medics in the NHS to unethically play favourites is apparent and distasteful.

Just to say that A private hospital buys the NHS treatment needed for one of there patients in a NHS hospital.

If you are a patient in A&E you are triaged, and those who need the treatment most urgently get it first. Are you suggesting that an ageist policy for the NHS would be a better solution, and that patients in NHS hospitals are more of a priority for emergency treatment than patients who are in private hospitals who cannot access the treatment they need in that facility? If you are you are in very dangerous territory.

No I'm suggesting in a system where waiting times in A&E (particularly in London) have reached unacceptable lengths, (only 74% of patients were seen in the waiting time of 4 hours in 2020). All treating one old man so quickly proves is that the NHS is not the service it is supposed to be. It provides one level of service for some and a different level for others. But then I suppose we'd better get used to it because it is only going to get worse.
