polomint Wed 17-Feb-21 18:32:23

I didnt know, I've not seen any adverts

polomint Wed 17-Feb-21 18:37:57

Our census (Scotland) is not until March 2022. I've just googled it

Ashcombe Wed 17-Feb-21 19:17:34

Some research online led me to this specimen form:-

I haven’t seen any adverts either, but the England and Wales is taking place on 21st March 2021 as the OP says .

I don’t feel inclined to complete it.

The census has always been a bit of a novelty for me me, because we always seemed to be living abroad and missed them!
1971 Singapore
1981 Cyprus
1991 Australia

It'll be strange doing it this year without DH....

Please everyone fill it in if you possibly can. Ever since they put the 1901 census online it has been a great source of information for those tracing their family trees. I remember the feeling of awe I had when I first saw my grandfather's name on the screen (I had never known him in life). It would be a pity if your information wasn't there for future generations to find.

It has 32 pages! A bit different from the 1911 census which was one page. I think it's too much, they will be unlikely to get all those questions answered. There will be people who aren't bright enough and others who won't want to give that amount of personal information.

I just looked at the pdf. It allows for 4 people to fill in, but that is only the first bit for the householder, and each other section per person in the house. So if there are only 2 of you, there are a lot less than 32 pages.
I agree about the records for tracing ancestry. I am trying to do that for my family right now. Once every 10 years isn't much

Esspee Thu 18-Feb-21 08:41:58

Each householder is legally obliged to complete one I believe. If you don’t you will be visited by an enumerator who will try to coax you and explain the penalties.
I am surprised the English one is going ahead this year. The Scottish government made the sensible decision to delay it for a year.

There was an ad on tv yesterday and the first I knew of it and apparently online this year.

Witzend Thu 18-Feb-21 09:12:56

I see that the more delicate questions (e.g. sexual orientation) are voluntary.

It seems very long at first sight because there are identical sections for persons 1,2,3, 4 5.
Seems quite straightforward to me. It won’t take long to fill in.

I had no idea this was the year and I have not received anything vis the post as yet.

The 1939 is the best Census for me, all hand written by the Head of the Household (my Grandfather) and with his address at the time, brought back memories seeing his handwriting again.
I’m assuming that this years will all be done online?

Witzend Thu 18-Feb-21 15:27:06

It can be done online or on paper, Oopsadaisy.

I understand that Board schools were started to teach Children how to read, so they could fill in the census forms for their elders., good story.

Cabbie21 Thu 18-Feb-21 15:38:29

The census helps in the planning of educational and health provision etc. It is intended to be done online but there are paper copies available for those who need them people who do not respond will be followed up. I have seen job adverts for this. Not ideal with Coronavirus about. People who do not take part may be fined up to £1000. Some questions are optional.

On 2001 Census, it was recorded that in England and Wales the 4th largest Religion is Jedi Knight.
Be interested to see what pops up in the next one.

I think Board Schools were intended to give all children a rudimentary education - filling in the census form was an added bonus

We live in our village board school.

We are prepared to complete our Census 2021 online tomorrow/ Monday. I hope the website doesn’t crash from several million users trying to do the same.

We only get a letter this time which is very easy to dismiss as junk mail! To get a paper form, you need to ask for one.

DH volunteers at local museum. Over lockdown several of them have been tasked with transcribing the 1939 Census records ( not individual forms but the collated register).Sometimes he asks my opinion on what an entry says. There’s some really interesting information even in this format.

No, we were sent a paper form to complete but certainly didn’t request one, just came automatically.
Have done it online, took about 15 minutes.

I don’t feel inclined to complete it.

Why ? Just out of interest ?
