Which actors do you consider over rated?

Flicking through channels last night I came across an actor who I think is vastly over rated and I can't understand those who think he is talented. I am talking about Mandy Patinkin. His movements are wooden, he rarely speaks with any inflection and has only one expression - miserable, even when trying to smile!

Derek Thompson who plays Charlie Fairhead in Casualty, he never knows what to do with his hands.

Agree with Marmight and others about Keira Knightley - I think she's dreadful.

Mandy Patinkin did a duet with Madonna on her album ‘I’m Breathless’. Lovely song. I liked him in Homeland, only watched the first two series as it wasn’t the same without Damian Lewis.

Bill Nighy Always plays the same and Julie Walters always plays Mrs Overall!

Nicola Walker (Last Tango in Halifax and Unforgotten) - I always think she is about to cry!

patlan45 Mon 22-Feb-21 13:06:39

Stephen Tompkinson. Always the same whatever character he plays! Dreadfully wooden actor!

When I watched the programme where Hugh Grant played Jeremy Thorpe I completely changed my mind about his acting- he was brilliant in that. I always think Nicola Walker ( in Unforgotten tonight) is always just Nicola Walker - can’t see she has any acting ability at all.

Laurence Fox. Indeed any of the Fox 'dynasty'. Couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. Assume he gets roles because of his name.

I feel sorry for all actors! Judi a great actress, Maggie Smith, brilliant. Hugh Grant has just started to reveal his talent. KK has none.Keeley Hawes in everything now - we’ll get bored with. Bill Ny replaceable with Jim Broadbent. Carey Mulligan - great. Jude Law is good. Cate Blanchard is lovely. Saiorse Ronan is very good, can do accents. Dustin excellent. Mostly English actors are good. Americans not so. But what do I know!

Moggycuddler Mon 22-Feb-21 13:11:26

I agree about John Wayne. He was never much of an actor. He was the same character in every film. He was also an unpleasant, drunken racist and bigot. I also think Jack Nicholson was very overrated. He was either wooden as a plank or completely OTT. Nicholas Cage too is overrated in my opinion.

Newatthis Mon 22-Feb-21 13:13:10

George Clooney, Jennifer Anniston - do they ever play anyone but themselves in any role?

Bunny1 Mon 22-Feb-21 13:20:09

Boris Johnson.

Agree with majority of these (don't know the soap ones)

However, I'm in vehement disagreement about Nicolas Cage. He's an amazing actor, incredibly diverse. Also very, very wouldable grin

moggie57 Mon 22-Feb-21 13:23:09

most of them are . but i like eddie redmayne . (pillars of the earth/les miserables amongst many more. ) i like tom hanks too .very down to earth man.

I don't really have any expectations re actors so I couldn't even begin to judge them! I'm just happy enough if I get involved in whatever story it is. I do have a few favourites though - particularly whoever is Mary on Coronation Street. I think she/her character is brilliant.

Haha! Never heard 'wouldable' before! Shall stash that one away for future use - thank you!

I love Hugh Grant but have to agree he always played the romantic lead in the same way when he was younger. He was brilliant in a Very English Scandal as others have said. Also a comic genius in Florence Foster Jenkins. Sinister in The Undoing. Haven’t seen Paddington but might look it up.
Also adore Maggie Smith but she always plays Maggie Smith, same mannerisms, same arch looks and pursed mouth.
Olivia Coleman, especially in The Favourite, awful cringeworthy performance, didn’t she get an Oscar for it?
Can’t think of any others at the moment.

gillyknits Mon 22-Feb-21 13:30:55

Idris Elba and Danny Dyer (his voice ?)

Haydnpat Mon 22-Feb-21 13:31:43

Emma Thompson she is the same in every film!

LondonMzFitz Mon 22-Feb-21 13:34:08

'fraid I'm another vote for Keira Knightley.

I like Mandy Patinkin, saw him in Concert in London in 2009, a unique voice. Ronnie Corbett and his wife were sitting behind me ...

My ex hated Nicholas Cage, but I adore him in Moonstruck, one of my absolute favourite films.

jaylucy Mon 22-Feb-21 13:36:37

I'm another one that thinks Daniel Craig is overrated. He reminds me of one of the Thunderbird puppets as he barely moves his lips!
There are quite a few actors that whatever part they play, they are exactly the same. I haven't Actually seen Danny Dyer in anything else other than Eastenders, so can't say if he's the same but his cockney wide boy thing that he carries around with him means that whenever his quiz show comes on, means I change channel!
I love Richard Gere, but he has certain mannerisms that are in every part he plays, same with Tom Cruise - the dramatic look away as if in thought then back to the camera/ actor or actress they are with !
James Nesbitt I can never watch, he just irritates me and also wish he'd just pluck his eyebrows !!!

polly123 Mon 22-Feb-21 13:37:19

Absolutely hate Danny Dyer, grating voice and no acting ability whatsoever. Dislike Hugh Grant (really boring) and agree that most, but not all, American actors are not so good. I'm sure that you have noticed the muffled whispering that passes for realistic speaking but can't be picked up by the listener especially when accompanied by background music to tell us what to feel and when!

Dee1012 Mon 22-Feb-21 13:37:40

I've never been a fan of Brad Pitt although in some roles, I've thought he was very good i.e Seven and Fight Club.
Likewise Nicholas Cage, he seems to go from the sublime (Leaving Las Vegas) to the ridiculous Face/Off
James Nesbitt...just no!

HannahLoisLuke Mon 22-Feb-21 13:37:40

James Nesbitt always has the same awful stricken look on his face. Perhaps that just is his normal face !!

I can’t watch James Nesbitt in crime dramas or anything where he’s serious but adore him in comic roles like Monroe and Cold Feet. Also in live interviews, he’s really twinkly and funny, fancy the pants off him ?
