Following on from the thread about actors - which singers do you think are over rated?

For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

I couldn’t understand the popularity of Kate Bush.

GagaJo Wed 24-Feb-21 19:49:42

I am not a huge Adele fan, but her first hit was 2008, so she has been going for a while.

I loved Kate Bush.

I never liked the Carpenters. Not a Bowie fan either. And as for Queen, they leave me cold. As for Paul McCartney, he is unfortunately past it.

I love a bit of Oasis though, and Blur too.

Carol Carpenter. She always sounded too mechanical.

Also David Bowie, never got him. I couldn't understand the sainthood of John Lennon, much as I loved the Beatles. He was a constituent part of their talent rather than the main star.

I agreed that Adele has a great voice, but she can’t sing words, just noises.
Louis Armstrong is another unconventional singer who is lovely to listen to. He gives me goose bumps.
GagaJo! Queen are fantastic!

I can think of lots. Adele, Rhianna, katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lily Allen -all awful. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are overrated too. As for male singers I'd say Ronan Keating, Robbie Williams, Sam Smith and Gary Barlow are all dreadful. There are many more besides.

GagaJo Wed 24-Feb-21 21:27:59

Oh yes, REALLY never liked Whitney Houston. But I also love Joan Armatrading. Saw her live once and she was great.

I quite like Lily Allen - but not for too long. Also like Sam Brown, daughter of Joe. Can't stand any of those rap singers though. I thought Amy Winehouse had a fantastic voice. I don't much like Tom Jones.

MissAdventure Wed 24-Feb-21 22:02:50

I loved watching Amy in her heyday.
She had 'it' for me.

Dinahmo Wed 24-Feb-21 22:33:38

Katherine Jenkins, Lesley Garrett, Frank Sinatra

NellG Wed 24-Feb-21 22:39:00

Joan Baez - her voice is excruciating!

Kylie. Nope.
I don't like songs with choruses of "la la la, la la la la la, la la la...."

Oh no: I feel an ear worm coming on.....shock

GagaJo Wed 24-Feb-21 22:47:02

I was watching Amy Winehouse singing acoustically earlier this evening. Such talent. Eating disorder did her in tho.

MissAdventure Wed 24-Feb-21 22:53:36

Anybody like Celine Dion? Dionne?

Not my cup of tea at all.

Someone said earlier they don't like Cilla Black, but I quite enjoy her voice.

DanniRae Thu 25-Feb-21 08:07:40

I love listening to Dusty Springfield and Rod Stewart and looking at David Essex!

grandmajet Thu 25-Feb-21 09:08:16

Most rap singers. I’m quite open minded, but their lyrics are often just vile. Completely utterly disgusting. The female ones are just as bad. Nicki Minaj. She’s awful - have you listened to the lyrics?

FannyCornforth Thu 25-Feb-21 09:28:41

Carol Carpenter. She always sounded too mechanical.

Karen
Beautiful melancholic voice to my ears.
I can't understand how she could be described as 'mechanical'.

honeyrose Thu 25-Feb-21 09:30:28

I’m not keen on James Blunt - that warbly voice is very irritating. DH thinks the same and we both remark that it’s “Mr Warbler” when his songs are played on the radio. I don’t like singers who shout - like Florence of
Florence and the Machine. Her voice really rubs me up the wrong way. That song she sings about a shipwreck - Aaaagh!

grandmajet Thu 25-Feb-21 09:41:37

Further to my previous anti-rapper Post, Lady Leshurr is brilliant, relevant and not vile!

Grannybags Thu 25-Feb-21 09:42:26

Could never understand the fuss about Helen Reddy.

She sounded so feeble singing I am woman hear me roar

BigBertha1 Thu 25-Feb-21 09:54:55

I realise I am later than most to appreciate the wonderful voice of Rag and Bone man - just treated myself to a download of HUMAN- such a warm rich voice.

GagaJo Thu 25-Feb-21 10:31:48

I really do not like Celine Dion either. And a not a fan of Karen Carpenter either FC, I am afraid. Dont like misery music in general. And I wont start on James Xunt either.

Lesley60 Thu 25-Feb-21 10:43:28

There’s just to many to mention But amongst mine would be
Sinatra
Englebert
Des O Conner
Tom Jones
Lulu
Cilla
Sting
