Following on from the thread about actors - which singers do you think are over rated?

For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

Cant stand singers who you can barely understand what they are singing about. Some of the young ones just don't pronounce their words clearly. Drives me mad. A couple of our older much loved singers voices have definitely seen better days.

This might start a ruction - can't abide Shirley Bassey. I've evidently got "true pitch" (whatever that is!) and she always sounds just slightly off-key. Her so-called voice hurts my ears. Agree about Paul McC. Someone should tell him that he just can't hack it any more.

Minimoom - technically, it's called "oversinging" and I totaly agree with you.

Lots of others but to be honest, there are also many I adore. Was listening to Julie Londons' version of "Cry me a river" yesterday and whilst I think the latest version is very good 0h boy! could she sing! You can down load it on google, if you want to listen.

I hated Punk, Rap with one exception - (Gangsters Paradise gives me goosepimples) and absolutely and utterly loathe any kind of folk music and don't get me started on morris dancers.....

Bob Dylan. Never liked him. He has a horrible nasal voice. And (probably get stoned for this) - The Beatles.

Mamma66 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:11:15

Elton John - sorry, I know I will get shot down in flames for this, but I genuinely can’t see what all the fuss is about...

'Whitney ruined Dolly's song' Dolly agreed with that. I went to see her at the O2 some years ago. She said, "When I heard Whitney's version of my song, I cried and cried. All the way to the bank.." Got to love Dolly!

Lookout01 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:15:14

Elton John used to be good but not now he's older unfortunately. Alfie Boe and Sam Smith are my no no's

Carol Carpenter. She always sounded too mechanical.

Do you mean Karen Carpenter? I've always thought she sounded as if she were reading the phone directory. Very bland voice. Sometimes you want something with a bit of an edge but she always sounds exactly the same. I'd rather say who I DO rate though, rather than who I don't. Can't believe anyone would think the Beatles over-rated!

Alison333 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:16:05

Singers who do that awful trilling on a note, followed by squawks - it's so boring. Worse when they murder someone else's song on so-called talent shows and the panel gives them an ecstatic reception! Aaargh!

Willow10 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:16:36

Daniel O'Donnel confused, Paul McCartney, Lulu, Cliff Richard, Cilla Black, to name but a few.

Barrie Gibb and Dolly Parton - do you think when they had their teeth done, they had to pay extra for that awful, distracting lisp? I'd be asking for a refund!

MarinaL Thu 25-Feb-21 11:17:31

She had a great personality but an awful screechy voice, sorry Cilla!
In my opinion Karen Carpenter had a unique and fabulous voice as does Adele. Strange how we all differ so much.

NoddingGanGan Thu 25-Feb-21 11:19:15

Katherine Jenkins, Andrea Bocelli. Cant stand either of them. Lesley Garret was okish in her early career but is now appalling.

Willow10 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:19:38

Forgot - Maddona! What's all the fuss about a pretty average pop singer?confused

Dee1012 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:21:04

Madonna - can put on a show but that's about it!
Shirley Bassey - just no'
Chris Martin (Coldplay) too weedy / soft for my liking but some great songs.

Calendargirl Thu 25-Feb-21 11:22:16

Bono.

Lesley Garrett.

Paul McCartney, Elton, Elaine Paige, Cliff, Billy Ocean, Barry Gibb, all these come to mind as sadly ‘past it’ and their singing needs to be painlessly destroyed.

tictacnana Thu 25-Feb-21 11:28:03

Paul McCartney ( now) and Jane Macdonald ( always). Both set my teeth on edge. Bod Dylan sometimes sounds like he needs to cough or blow his nose. Dido , another one who sounds like she’s had a heavy cold.

I was watching Amy Winehouse singing acoustically earlier this evening. Such talent. Eating disorder did her in tho.

Think it was more the drugs and drink. Great voice though.

Thisismyname1953 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:29:43

I couldn’t stand the Carpenters. So depressing. I called it ‘ music to slit your throat to’ . Awful!

SillyNanny321 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:30:50

Anyone who doesnt sing in a heavy rock/metal band! Thats because its the only music I listen too!

Because she knows how to grab publicity, always trying to shock and the public fall for it.

Jennyluck Thu 25-Feb-21 11:34:15

Love Sam Smith. ??
Adele has a good voice but very overrated.
Overrated for me are cold play, just don’t get it. Such dreary songs.
Beyoncé, James Arthur, Kylie, oh and rappers. Awful. Cheryl, someone obviously likes her, because she gets lots of opportunities. Pretty girl with a poor voice.

All of them.
The ability to record and replay your voice has given singers a licence to print money for doing no work.
Such is the way of the world with som many things and it is the world's greatest harm; collecting money for doing nothing.

Camelotclub Thu 25-Feb-21 11:42:10

Ed Sheeran, when he starts to rap it's toe-curlingly embarrassing. A white, red-haired rural boy trying to sound like he's from East LA (or somewhere)!

Annaram1 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:42:53

Robbie Williams. Don't like his voice and attitude and he is ugly as well.

57VRS Thu 25-Feb-21 11:43:46

New one on the list - Kathryn Jenkins!!! Cant stand the warbleyness of it. In fact any oprea singer who warbles on the long notes!!

lizzypopbottle Thu 25-Feb-21 11:44:35

I agree about the warblers and screechers. Most Fridays, before lockdown, I would do my Sainsbury's shopping and then meet a friend for coffee in the shop's cafe. The (apparently obligatory) 'music' would be playing at a volume just loud enough to be irritating and would usually be a female droner or screecher. Once I noticed it, I couldn't not hear it. There never seemed to be a break between tracks. It must be awful to work there.
