Following on from the thread about actors - which singers do you think are over rated?

For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

I am prepared to get shot down, but I have never been able to stand Tom Jones. His voice does nothing for me and physically he gives me the creeps!!

MayBee70 Thu 25-Feb-21 11:56:57

I know what you mean about Tom Jones. However, to me there are two Tom Jones and I do actually like the one that reincarnated himself by letting his hair go grey and started singing different kinds of songs. I think his son influenced him at the time.

I have been to many live concerts during my life and I can safely say Rod Stewart was the worst.
Other end of the scale, Freddie Mercury was the best ?

I have to stick up for poor Barry Gibb. Yes, he warbles but at least there's some emotion in it and he has written some fantastic songs over the years.

Celine Dion,
Mariah Carey (squawk fest)
Frank Sinatra
Cilla Black

Leonard Cohen. Don’t listen to him if you’re a bit low, he’ll finish you off!

Alioop Thu 25-Feb-21 12:21:21

Cilla, Kate Bush the list could go on, but I really can't understand the love for Robbie Williams. He's a terrible singer and he's so cocky with it. All he does he throw the mike out to the crowd at concerts to sing for him. Awful.
George Michael had the most gorgeous voice, adore his music.

We watched the new Bee Gees documentary the other day. I didn't realise what a lovely melodic voice Robin Gibb had.

Love this thread and a bit shocked how many famous singers are loathed, it’s a real eye opener! I had no idea..
I have never understood the Judy Garland mania and cannot bear Somewhere over the Rainbow.

Gramps47 Thu 25-Feb-21 12:33:33

Dare I say Cliff? Not his music, just his ‘Aren’t I wonderful’ approach.

Pearlsaminger Thu 25-Feb-21 12:37:23

Elton John. Went to a concert of his about 15 years ago. Miserable old goat sat behind his piano and didn’t move once. The account is were terrible and it all sounded like a continuous hum. Fell asleep and my daughter had to keep waking me as I was snoring! grin

Pearlsaminger Thu 25-Feb-21 12:38:54

Accoustics!

Tom Jones - whether you like him or not he has the most powerful voice of all of them, and is still going strong so is not overrated.

Bee Gees - love them all and their distinctive style of singing. And what a catalogue of great songs, both for themselves and others. I won't hear a word against them!

Robbie Williams - may have sung a few nice songs but is far too up himself is and definitely overrated!

Noreen3 Thu 25-Feb-21 12:50:56

I don't rate Alfie Boe.I've heard a lot better than him, though they may not be as succesful as he is

notgoneyet Thu 25-Feb-21 12:57:34

MayBee70 totally agree with you about Tom Jones. There are so many singers who were good in their day, but age has sadly demolished the voice they had, but there are still a few that have retained the powerful voice - Tom Jones and Dolly Parton for example

Lesley60 Thu 25-Feb-21 13:00:41

Kylie
Rod Stewart
Stones
Celine
David Bowie

helgawills Thu 25-Feb-21 13:04:06

Over rated
Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Jamie Cullum, Madonna, Abba....yuk

Love Bob Dylan, his voice has changed so much over the years!

BRAVEBETH Thu 25-Feb-21 13:04:17

Paul is wonderful. He is so down to earth. I used to live very near him. He was so friendly and always had time for a real conversation. He is a real family man and a great grandad. He is just so normal no airs and Grace's.

Buttonjugs Thu 25-Feb-21 13:05:58

Adele - her songs seem to lack any melody at all, Ed Sheeran, and Lewis Capaldi are good but not THAT good. Ellie Goulding, who I am convinced sings like a baby because she can’t hold a tune with her real voice. I have been a huge fan of Blondie (Debbie Harry) and Madonna but neither are good singers live.

honeyrose Thu 25-Feb-21 13:06:11

I think that a lot of singers have a pleasant voice rather than a good voice and had that “lucky break” into the music industry as they had a good song/songs as a massive bonus. I like a range of music, but hate rap and shouty music. That’s not singing.
Jane Macdonald is one such singer with an ok voice rather than a good voice. I love her cruise programmes on tv, but when she sings at the end of the show, I go and make a cup of tea! Cringe-worthy. She sung the Bjork song “Its oh so quiet” at the end of an Icelandic cruise. Not good.

honeyrose Thu 25-Feb-21 13:07:06

.... she sang, not sung. Grammar!

DanniRae Thu 25-Feb-21 13:20:16

"honeyrose" - I agree about her singing at the end of her cruise programmes, I too find it a bit toe curling!
But I have to say that I have seen her in concert and it was most enjoyable and she told the funniest and naughtiest joke I have heard in a long time grin

Onwardsandupwards Thu 25-Feb-21 13:27:49

I hate to say it but David Essex is a terrible singer! It’s only his beautiful looks that got him to stardom.

Tooyoungytobeagrandma Thu 25-Feb-21 13:29:26

Paul McCartney(Beatles in general)
Elton John
Bob Geldof
Sam Smith (whingy, whiney about everything has spoilt it for me as did like his voice)
Leona Lewis (warbler)
Any of Take That (but especially the arrogant knob Robbie Williams)
Barbara Streisand
Sting (another arrogant knob)
Despite being mid 60's actually quite like alot of the current "dance" tunes not into rap and foul language but do like Avici (rip) & MNEK, Five seconds of summer etc. and still love Queen. Think a lot of the big names like Elton and McCartney etc live on their past and should really pack up now as are terrible. The Eagles still put on an excellent show as do groups like 10cc and Fleetwood Mac. I also like music from the 50's but never was into the crooners, Sinatra, Sammy Davies etc but do like Al Martino but think that is more about childhood memories?.

Kim19 Thu 25-Feb-21 13:33:52

Any singer I don't recognise on hearing. If they don't have that distinctive voice 'something' then I simply don't rate them. They go into my mindset of pleasant but unspectacular.
