Following on from the thread about actors - which singers do you think are over rated?

For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

Paul mcartney
ed sheeran
I also agree with dolly parton and barry gibb, elton john and madonna

Kylie, always in tune but sings like a 3 year old. Can't bear Paul McCartney, The Frog Chorus sums him up for me. And top of the list Oasis, whichever brother it was singing, a monotonous whining drone.

Absolutely love Paul Mccartney. Sting is great too. Think we have some really good singers in this country Tim Jones is 80 and still has an amazing voice.love Ed.Sheeren.
Can’t stand Madonna,, Mariah Carey, there just divas.
If you have ever hears the late Eva Cassidy sing it will melt your heart. Spice girls bloody rubbish, but wasn’t my age group anyway.

Sorry Tom.

Paul McCartney.
Little Mix.
Ellie Goulding

I think Paul McCartney and Cliff Richard should really stop singing. They had good voices in their heyday but have completely lost them now. Otherwise the singers that l really think are overrated are Russell Watson - totally untrained and it shows - and Aled Jones, who had a beautiful voice as a child but has a very limited range as an adult.

Bob Dylan, could never understand his popularity!
James Blunt- his songs are so depressing.
Frank Sinatra- boring voice.
Sandie Shaw and Lulu (in their day)
Agree with others re Madonna, VB and Cheryl Cole
Adele is amazing I love her voice she is a very talented singer song writer.
Rag n Bone Man is another who I rate, brilliant voice.
Loved The Who, Beatles and Fleetwood Mac in their heydays and most of the heavy metal bands especially Deep Purple and Def Leppard.

NellG

Joan Baez - her voice is excruciating!

cannot agree more

Aepgirl Thu 25-Feb-21 14:52:57

Most of the contestants on The Voice (which I know longer watch) don’t ‘sing’, they just make a noise, and look as if they are in pain.

Some write good songs but are awful singers. Today's music seems to be all about screeching and mumbling. And the nasal sounds so rampant in those trying to sing a melody are just so annoying. Can't think of any popular ones at the moment I would choose to listen to - Michael Buble perhaps. Apologies to the spelling police for his surname.

I am, in no one's opinion but my own, grin the world's biggest Beatles fan. They were never known for their voices really, more for the wonderful music and songs they wrote.
I'm not sure any singer should give up if they enjoy what they do and people are still willing to pay to see them.

I’ve loved reading these as I was one of the first contributors to the thread. So many others listed I can agree with - Celine Dion is referred to as Sealion in my house! Don’t like her voice.
Not keen on singers who think they are opera stars - Russell Watson, Alfie Boe, Katharine Jenkins and that ilk. They sing one aria, but would be unable to perform in a full opera. Hate how Lesley Garrett used to burst into song for no reason.

Must say I like Paul Carrick - his version of ‘how long has this been going on’ is currently on an Amazon tv ad.
Rag n Bone Man is amazing!!

dolphindaisy Thu 25-Feb-21 15:03:06

Love this thread as I thought I was the only person in the world who didn't like some of the acts:-

Frank Sinatra - especially singing My Way
Kylie Minogue - too old to sing like a little girl
ABBA - never owned one of their records and hate being expected to dance to their music or watch the terrible films
The BeeGees - awful whine
Whitney Houston - murdered "I will always Love you"
Cliff Richard - never was Rock n Roll

All the current favourites seem to be young females and I really can't tell one from the other

(I really do sound like a grumpy old woman now)

Caro57 Thu 25-Feb-21 15:05:33

Paul McCartney should hang up his vocal chords- what little is left of them

Bazza Thu 25-Feb-21 15:09:08

Top of my list would have to be Katy Melua, she just whines, can’t abide Oasis, James Blunt, Celine Dion, or absolutely any rap. It’s a very interesting post, talk about one man’s (or woman’s) meat! What a boring world it would be if we all liked the same things.

Subi Thu 25-Feb-21 15:10:43

Lulu, Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Cilla Black,
They can’t sing!

Kate1949 Thu 25-Feb-21 15:13:15

Our daughter's friend joined an online campaign entitled something like 'Stop Paul Mccartney and Elton John from singing live'. Why? What harm are they doing? I wonder what members of this online group have ever done with their lives. It made me cross.

Foxyferret Thu 25-Feb-21 15:19:01

Paloma Faith, you need ear plugs. Does anyone really sing anymore? There are so many that just shout and warble.

Daisend1 Thu 25-Feb-21 15:38:51

Until the recent U.S inauguration I was a fan of Lady Gaga
Her rendition of the U.S national anthem was to put it mildly 'ear splitting'. Pop concert yes.Not such an occasion as this.

Florida12 Thu 25-Feb-21 15:44:54

I wonder who started the warbling? Was it Leona Lewis from X factor?

Florida12 Thu 25-Feb-21 15:46:18

And before anyone says Frank Ifield, he was allowed.

jaylucy Thu 25-Feb-21 15:52:00

I turn Madonna off as soon as she appears - never understood why people rave about her!
After watching a concert by the Eagles on TV , I beagan to wonder if any of the current singers/bands will still be recognised in 30 or 40 years time ?

Foxyferret Thu 25-Feb-21 15:54:35

JayLucy, love the Eagles, I recorded it

Lynn1959 Thu 25-Feb-21 15:55:22

I have to turn off the radio when Kate Bush comes on- no one else does this to me

Eloethan Thu 25-Feb-21 15:57:00

I think Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice. The singer, Rumer, sounds similar. Other than Slow, she doesn't seem to have got memorable enough songs.
