I've just heard Karen Carpenter on the radio singing "Goodbye to Love" and I have to say I think she had a beautiful voice (but a very sad life).
Robert Kenyon, Reform's candidate for Makerfield. Would you let him in your house?

Following on from the thread about actors - which singers do you think are over rated?
For me it has to be Sting - all his songs sound the same and he just sings the same words over and over again.

Rappers!
Some beauiful version of Stings songs ...sung by other people youtu.be/PZ8g9rZOX_I

Lulu - has to be top of my list what a racket.
Then;-
Robbie Williams - cant sing, cant dance, cant act.
And these will cause a stir
Andre Bocelli and Alfie Boe - far too strangulated for me.
I wholeheartedly agree about Andrea Bocelli, he is AWFUL! I think it's Core 'ngrato he ruins with his tremulous inability to control either pitch or breath. Alfie Boe has a pleasant voice and on that basis I would rate him as second string as a stage performer with amplification but in an opera his voice lacks any carrying power. I saw him in la Boheme at ENO a couple of years ago and his voice barely reached the circle. He is a classical pop artist really, like Toni Dalli used to be in the 1960s and Mario Lanza before him.
No-one will beat the late Luciano Pavarotti, but several come very close :- Jonas Kaufmann, Rolando Villazon, Oh, and while we're on opera singers, watch Anna Netrebko singing 'Quando m'en vo' soletta' in concert on a Medici TV youtube video. I challenge any red-blooded man not to fall just a little bit in love with her.
It has to be Kylie as she only got where she is by her looks not very voice and I hate all One Direction especially Harry Styles. His songs are boring and tuneless. He is successful purely because of his looks. I prefer Lewis Capaldi. My fave female singers are Leona, Beyonce and Ariana Grande.
InnocentBystander I like to hear Andrea Bocelli sing. However,
a few years ago we visited Verona. We had a tour of the coliseum (or whatever it's called) there. The guide was telling us about the people who had performed there, including Pavarotti.
Someone mentioned Bocelli and the guide said 'Yes he sang here but he wasn't a patch on the others. His voice didn't carry at all.'
Just returned to this thread and noticed some of the singers I could have added to my list have been mentioned since. I so agree about Celine Dion MissAventure -awful singer. That X Factor winner Leona Lewis, another awful singer and honeyrose you are so right about Florence of Florence and the machine and oh yes Jennyluck Beyonce, how could I leave her out and Paloma Faith. One I can't agree with grandmajet is Leonard Cohen, his voice live - magnificent.
Cliff Richard ✅, Paul Mccartney now ✅ and Elton John now ✅ all should call it a day.
Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue . Very overrated in my opinion . Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey have stood the test of time I think even though they are older singers. Love to hear Aled Jones sing when I need soothing! Sorry just realised they are all Welsh, and so am I
We mustn't forget Margarita Pracatan ? who was underrated rather than overrated. ???
Clive James Show
But how could anyone forget Margarita?
Never could see the appeal of the Beatles & I did see them live. The Stones on the other hand were brilliant. As was Bowie. Living just outside London I saw all the 60s& 70s groups.
Kylie
Meatloaf was awful when I saw him live, so out of tune, just shows what they do in the studio to make it sound good for cd's
A lot of the 'old' singers can't really reach the high notes anymore and have let the backing singers carry the tune.
ABBA. Lulu. The Spice Girls. Practically every boy band that ever existed. Beyoncé.
Georgesgran... You've read my mind, I can't stand Mariah Carey or her voice, she's so plastic and boring. Paul McCartney is dull and droning. And Madonna can't sing, end of. Sting is a repetitive one syllable bore. And non of these singing talent shows, have any real talent, when the judges over act with their enthusiastic praise, it sounds so false its embarrassing, I would much rather they be honest, and say" sorry but your voice is shit "
Dannirae. I love the carpenters, Karen carpenters voice was unique, I never tire of listening to her, sadly her life was tragic, such a sad story. I believe her overbearing mother was her downfall, it messed the poor girls head up.
Love Adele very talented lady in my opinion. I also cannot stand the screechers!
Love Dylan, I know he doesn't have a voice but he never intended to sing, just to write. His lyrics are amazing. I have to feel what people are singing about to "get it"
Spent most of my youth listening to Sabbath and Zepplin, Deep Purple etc still do. I actually like singer/songwriters like Ed Sheeran he also sings from the heart, a must for me.
I am going to take a positive stance and mention the singers who I think have fantastic voices but are really underrated - Lady Gaga, Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Mark Almond (Soft Cell plus Mark and the Mambas).
Well I think this post just about covers everybody who ever sang!!! It's all a matter of taste I suppose and some not so great singers actually have 'something else' that cannot always be quantified. I love those moments when you hear something that makes you stop and listen and then try to find out who it was. I must admit it doesn't often happen to me these days.
Music is such a great gift (depending on who's singing, I suppose)
I love finding new songs, or old ones that i missed out on.
I agree about Florence. I’ve always felt that I should like her but there’s something about her and her voice that irritates me. I’ve never been able to pinpoint what it is.

The music from the new BBC4 Scandi noir sounds interesting. Someone called Antony Bentley who is also in a band called Husky Rescue. I’m writing here because I’ve just googled it and if I don’t mention it somewhere I’ll’ve forgotten his name by tomorrow.....
George Michael had a wonderful voice.
Maybe I missed it but nobody has mentioned Neil Diamond. In his prime: superb. Now: quite embarrassing but I gather he has developed Parkinson's so that could be the cause. And nobody mentioned John Denver - a sad loss. Of the older women, there's Carole King. Her 'Natural Woman' is very erotic in a subtle way. Not 'in yer face' as so much more recent stuff is.
NannyDa - I agree that George Michael had an amazing voice.
Watching news this morning, Bonnie Tyler is releasing a new record, wish some could accept retirement
