I can relate to your ham sandwich incident gagagran my daughter went through a vegetarian stage as a teenager as well. We went to stay with relatives in America who had a large beef farm, they had meat at every meal. I can still remember the tears and tantrums and she is 44 now. The American family could not comprehend a meat free meal,

sarah1954 Same here both boys out from dawn till dusk, not a care in the world.The biggest compliment I get is they both say they were last generation to have such freedom , and had the best childhood. Makes me feel I did something right .

I have an elderly neighbour who is frightfully posh, even she didn’t go to finishing school, she went to a Secretarial College in Chelsea where she and her girlfriends lived in a nearby hotel!
She’s lovely, but so posh I’m surprised she speaks to me, she often reminisces about the Balls she went too and says’well you know what is was like’ um, nope, we weren’t invited to many posh Balls on my council estate!
Anyways that’s by the by, kids have selective memories, unless it doesn’t fit with what they are arguing with you about, then they will alter and backtrack on everything they have just said.

Smiling at these stories and just thinking of the truth in the old saying:

"A mother's place is in the wrong"!

she'd probably been watching old episodes of from ladette to lady.
i feel sorry for the vegetarian stuck on a beef farm in the middle of nowhere.
youngsters are often overlooked, their preferences and priorities belittled or ignored.
there's bound to be some resentment because of the power dynamic, ie being so often subject to others' decisions.

It was not the happiest time FarNorth fortunately we could take her out to eat from time to time. Mealtimes were uncomfortable though.

Thanks Heavens it's not just me. My YD aged 47. Blames me for everything. She is not presently conversing with me. After the initial upset, I am enjoying the peace.

It was a finishing school in Teesdale where a lot of
“ young ladies” from my part of the world attended in the 1970’s.

My friends that attended learnt to sew, cook, shorthand etc.
It was actually a year well spent if you were not cut out for A levels.

My daughter would have been expelled in the first week.

Even after getting her degree in Marketing she told us we should have made her study Law. ?

DS2 once suggested that I didn't 'make' him do his homework. As if I could have made him do anything. Nevertheless - obviously with no input from me - he managed to achieve a first class degree and a MBA. Who read his dissertations? Guess! However, now he has his own teenagers and chickens are coming home to roost.

Oh yes that sounds very familiar and photos of my daughter in school uniform wearing odd socks because she refused to wear those that matched, but now she says “ why did you let me go to school looking like that?”

I have been recently accused of "falling out with the parents of DD's friends" so she never had sleepovers and had no friends at school where she was miserable!
I was stunned. DD born late 80s
She is happily married to someone who she was at school with they have 2 adorable DC etc etc.
I think it's blame mother game. Did anyone have sleepovers back then?

Not that I ever knew anyone who went to one, but for some reason I’d always imagined finishing schools to be in Switzerland. Where as well as everything else you could brush up your French/German, with skiing thrown in.

Do they actually still have finishing schools? No one here ever goes to them though there are a few posh schools here. One of my daughters went to PLC which is Presbyterian Ladies College. My grandson was convinced it was, 'Posh Lady's College.'

Didn't Lucy Clayton - in London - teach young 'gels' deportment, how to address a Bishop, flower arranging, etc., and I think there has been at least one such school in Yorkshire.

Oh it is so good to know that I am not the only one with adult child/children with selective memories. Must say, that this youngest one of mine is the only one. Her siblings all regard her with annoyed amusement when she gets going. Strange thing is that she is an Educational Psychologist - and I have never met anyone with less empathy than she has - do often wonder how good she is at her job.

My elder brother (born in 1929), always moaned (in all seriousness) about our Father. His complaint was that Dad did not take the opportunity during the war years of making money on the black market. Honestly!!! he really felt that Dad had behaved legally and ethically just as a way of having a go at him!!!!

It always used to be Swiss finishing schools in st Clare’s and Mallory Towers books that I used to read.

Yes I remember that too silverlining loved those stories.
