Royal Mail threatens to stop deliveries over dog attacks
What a difference a day makes 😢😢
Craig and Lindsay Foreman end their hunger strike in prison in Iran.
This query is prompted by a conversation I had yesterday with an acquaintance who said her recently married D, second marriage, had been rather disappointed by her man-friend’s proposal and he has been making up for it since with romantic (expensive) gestures.
Have things changed so much?
It is a very long time since my H and I got engaged and it seemed to “just happen” he certainly never proposed, we had known each other since school and always knew we would marry sooner rather than later.
Any really romantic stories?

Before he proposed (the full works, bended knee etc. in Richmond Park) DH asked my father's permission. The answer was a rather doubtful: "Well, I suppose you know what you are doing!". Charming, eh?
First husband said one day while we were shopping in a supermarket (already living together) "I wonder if we'll still go out shopping together in 40 years when we're an old married couple?" I said "Maybe!" Then he said "Would you marry me then?" And I said yes. (All very heady and romantic at the time, but we were 21 and 16 and it only lasted 5 years.) Second hubby just blurted out "Will you marry me?" while we were eating a greasy meal in a Wimpy bar in Blackpool, after we'd only known each other for about 3 months. Been together for 42 years now.
I met DH for the first time at an Halloween party, and we had been dating for just 6 weeks when he took me Christmas Shopping, and he stopped to look in the window of a Jewellers shop. We then went inside to buy some small Children's bracelets, he then asked me to choose a ring for myself. I started looking at Dress Rings, but he asked the assistant to let me try on a few diamonds, but at this point I was unaware of what exactly he was upto.
I chose a plain Diamond Cluster ring, it cost £130 in 1986. He paid for it, then put it away in its box into his pocket.
We went away to North Wales for Christmas, where on Christmas Eve he produced the ring out of its box under the Christmas Tree, went down on one Knee and asked me to Marry him. I said yes!
My Parents both said it had been too quick and it would never last, but we are still together with two adult Daughters from the marriage and 5 DGC.
My marriage proposal was not spectacular or too memorable, but our 37 years of marriage was truly wonderful and happy until he decided to leave me - what a fool I was to think everything was OK.
We were getting a mortgage, in those days they would only count both incomes if married. On Thursday we rang the registry office, got a 9am cancellation for the following Saturday. Sooooo romantic
I’ve heard similar stories of entitled young women refusing to accept a ‘poor’ proposal. Surely if you love them it doesn’t really matter. My DH had asked me to marry him while we were in bed. We went out one day to buy a ring. I thought I’d wear it straight away but he said no and pocketed the box. Then got down on one knee in the shopping centre. Maybe not the most romantic to some, but very out of character for him, so it meant a lot and I still smile when I remember. Unfortunately they’ve made changes to the shopping centre since but we still talk about it when we’re more or less in the right place. Honestly, if he’s done some big over the top romantic gesture people seem to expect these days I’d have been so embarrassed.
Husband no. 2 said "we can get married but only if you promise to have a baby". Not surprisingly he's now my ex!
In Bettys in Harrogate, grand piano being played. Not on his knee as he has a bad back but with a lovely ring. The two ladies on the next table cried, which was very sweet. A waitress came and brought us two chocolate covered hearts. I’ll never forget it.
My proposal happened in a phone box!
My OHs car had broken down on the way home and we had called my dad to pick us up.
I put the phone down and he turned to me and said "shall we get married?"
We went shopping for a ring ( I had already chosen one way before he asked!) the following weekend before we announced it to friends and family.
When we told his sister, her reaction was not "oh congratulations" but "poor kids, they'll have your colour hair!!" (we were both redheads).
Not very romantic at all but seeing as he is my ex, possibly not a bad thing!
We were 17 and 19 and both desperate to leave home for slightly different reasons but couldn't afford a place of our own individually so decided to share.
His DM, being an Irish Roman Catholic and it being the late 1970s, created a stink about the prospect of us, "living over the brush" so one Friday evening, when discussing our plans for the following day, (I was going into the city to shop with my mother) he said, "I suppose you'd better choose yourself an engagement ring while you're there, don't go mad."
I chose a tiny diamond solitaire, barely more than a chip, in 9 carat gold which was 70 something pounds. The shop put it aside and he collected and paid for it the following week.
The marriage was a resounding failure but we hung on for 30 years and have three wonderful DC for whom I'm eternally grateful.
After an evening out, after seeing each other for about 6 weeks, he got taken short whilst walking me home and had to have a wee along the cemetary wall.
We lasted 26 years, he remained totally unromantic for all that time, he is more romantic to his current partner of 17 years
We were out at the pub having a drink. When he proposed l said yes but did not mention it on our next date, thinking perhaps he had been joking.
Eventually he said well you have not asked about shopping for an engagement ring.He thenwent and asked my Dad and we eent and got the ring.
41 years later, 3 children and 4 grandchildren we are still as happy as Larry and enjoying our retirement till covid struck, but still laughing after all these years!
My husband proposed to me only 2 weeks after meeting and I honestly didn't hesitate in saying yes. He didn't get down on one knee, he just said (as we were watching the comedy Soap on the television), do you fancy getting married? I just looked at him and then said "Yes, I really do". We got married 6 months later and have now been married for 35 years with 2 amazing children (both adults now and doing exceptionally well). I still love him to bits and enjoy his company thoroughly. Best ever rash decision I have ever made in my whole life
We were very poor and trying to work out how to get more money. I read in the Which Money Guide that as I was working and he wasn't we could get an extra tax allowance if we got married. I suggested it and we married the following monday before I went into work (an hours flexitime). Not the most romantic engagement/marriage!
Mr Seven had been married before and made it clear from the start that he would never marry again.
My 2 young Step-children proposed , on his behalf after we had been together for a year or so, but it wasn't to be.
One night, walking back from a concert, and slightly tipsy, Mr Seven got down on one knee and proposed, my answer was no, ask me again in the morning when you are sober. He did, I said yes and here we are now many years later.
Mine asked if I wanted to get married. I said ,"Who to?". That was 50 years ago. My engagement ring cost £30 from an antique shop.
Oh yes! We had been living together for 6 years. I went to midnight Mass as usual on Christmas Eve. He always waited up for me & we had one present each before going to bed. That year it was an engagement ring.
I had no idea at all that he wanted to get married - which we did in the following June.
I would have liked a proper proposal, but we also just sort of drifted into in and I actually had to do a bit of subtle pushing to get it to happen at all.
DH insisted that we get a ring the next afternoon, Saturday, when most of the shops were shut at that time and I ended up with almost the only ring we could find in the only shop which was open. This was stolen some years later and we used the insurance money to choose a lovely ring together.
My DS actually asked his future MIL to go with him to choose a ring which I thought was quite clever. But DIL knew the proposal was coming because they'd told me that they planned to get engaged in a year and that was what happened.
My parents got engaged after knowing each other for just two weeks. My mother said he shouldn't spend too much on the engatement ring in case it didn't work out as they'd not known each other long enough.
They were married until my father died almost 30 years later.
After being with him for just 6 weeks he asked me if I wanted to get engaged, I said no. He bought me a ring anyway.
Fast forward 4 years to 1975 and pregnant it was assumed we would marry and he asked my dad if he could marry me. We did and so glad that I did. I loved him with all my heart through the years.
He left in January 1987. Still love him.
My then partner took me to Paris for the weekend on the pretence it was a birthday treat for me. On the Saturday evening we were at the Eiffel Tower, we’re going to the top he said, no I can’t I’m scared of heights. He was quite insistent so I thought I would give it a go. We got to the second level and got into the lift, before the lift went up a panicked voice was shouting let me out. It was my partner. He was claustrophobic and couldn’t do the lift. We went back down and went off for dinner. Next day while walking around Notre Dame, at 11 o’clock the bells were tolling, I turned round and he was on one knee with a gorgeous ring and proposed to me there. I said yes of course and then he told me he had every intention of proposing at the top of the Tower the night before but with my vertigo and his claustrophia it didn’t work out. We had a real giggle about it but thought Notre Dame was very romantic anyway and he’s been my lovely hubby now for 17 years.
The other Mrs AmberSpyglass wanted to propose on my birthday, but she was acting so squirrelly the day before that I twigged and asked her repeatedly if she was going to propose, reassuring her I’d say yes. So what should have been a romantic proposal turned into a slightly exasperated “Well, will you marry me then?” and I’ve never been happier (until the wedding day and all the bits after that).
Maybe it’s growing up not having had the option to marry, but conventional romantic gestures never held much weight for me.
My ex proposed to me in my parents sitting room.... He had picked the ring and it was huge. I didn't like it at all, not one I would of chosen and to me looked fake. It was confirmed when I took it to get sized and the girl told me it would probably cost as much to size it as the ring cost. Her poor face when I put it on my engagement finger so she could see it on to measure it. It ended up causing a rash on my finger and I couldn't wear it. He never replaced it and doesn't matter now anyway, it got binned like he did lol
i didn't have a proposal, or an engagement ring! i don't even remember discussing marriage, it just sort of happened.
unfortunately catman is not romantic so i have never got the ring, but we are still together after 42 years.
