Meghan and Harry. Has anyone changed their opinion post Oprah?

My late husband was a dark skinned Indian. Both my children are coffee coloured and good looking. They both married white British people. When my daughter in law was expecting her first child she said "I wonder what colour he will be." I said I thought he would be light skinned as he would be three quarters white. The child was very fair with red hair. Their next child was very fair with white blond hair which darkened as time went on. The third child was a little darker with black hair. You cannot but wonder what a mixed race child will look like. My daughter's baby was light skinned with brown hair. All so different. All so beautiful.

Even her father passed off the question on the colour of the baby's skin as just a " dumb question and not racism ".

Maybe the family wondered that if the child was rather dark, how to help it to cope with the inevitable questions etc.? I really don’t think it was racist. I believe that anything that doesn’t go Meghan’s way, is either dubbed racist or rejection...

That said, I doubt it. Diana seemed to go out of her way to give the boys a 'normal' childhood with public unhindered displays of love. I can still see that lovely photo of them all laughing as they plunged into the water on a theme park ride.

White privilege is massive there, and I’ve seen it with my own eyes. You cannot claim that Americans are more aware of racial bias when you clearly don’t know. What do you think the BLM was all about?

I’ve not been that far south but can appreciate it’s a very big deal in the USA.

But we and the RF live in the UK.

Except perhaps I’m a bit more enlightened about the Great British public as represented on Gransnet, many of whom seem unable to grasp the realities of racism and mental health issues in the 21st Century, and are intent on blaming people for not behaving EXACTLY as they want them to.

I’ve got no more to say because anything I do say will result in me being labelled a “Meghan supporter” or some equally childish name.

I can't imagine why the comment about the baby's colour was deemed to be racist. I think most people are aware that mixed race babies are a beautiful colour - at least I've never seen one that wasn't.
grandMattie I see no reason why there should be "inevitable comments" about the child's colour as he got older. We all know that MM is mixed race and that a child of hers may be darker than Harry or may be not.

The remarks about the baby’s skin tone are important as family hold wealth and power and are the head of the commonwealth. The royals have a long history of racism, Princess Micheal wore a blackamoor brooch to meet the Duchess and Prince Philip’s racist opinions in his own words are well documented. The commonwealth countries must be watching this with great interest. I’m a fan of the Queen and cried my eyes out when Dianna died and went and paid my respects, and had almost accepted Charles and Dianna, but watching history repeat itself, I’m thinking that the monarchy should end when the Queen dies.

Well said, Dilly. Racist attitudes are very entrenched and take a long time and a lot of willingness to be worked through, and got rid of.

The quickest way, of course, is to have mixed race children. You instantly realise how evil it is.

It is a shame the family didn't work harder to help them. The new blood would have given the RF a LOT more credibility and have distanced them from their nazi sympathising past.

I think they are well matched - both spoilt, both feeling “entitled” and both wanting their bread buttered on both sides - they appear to want the prestige of being royal, without the work that prestige requires.

I’m very disappointed with the pair of them - at first I thought “here is a breath of fresh air, both will bring so much positivity to the work of the royals”. Sadly, I’m wrong and just want them to fade away into obscurity, though that will never happen as they love the limelight too much, despite allegedly craving “privacy”.

I didn’t watch the interview, the snippets were enough for me.

It seemed like neither could accept their place in the pecking order, fourth behind the Queen, Charles and William, and kept alluding to their ‘star’ qualities on their various tours which they obviously felt was unappreciated within the family - a bit like Diana and her “after all I’ve done for this family”

Other than Princess Anne, these second born heirs appear to have an inflated sense of their ‘magic’ and what it can do, not realising that it’s cheerful duty that is the bedrock of a long lasting respected monarchy.

At the end I was pleased to see that they were happy with their new life, chickens, dogs etc and hope they all live happy ever after.....?

They've sunk even lower in my opinion and a lot of it was intended to tease with little unexplained snippets scattered around.

The timing of the racist comment - they disagreed.

Meghan saying she couldn't have lunch with her girlfriends. Why not? Diana did.

Diana also had help with her mental health issues.

Harry saying he was too embarrassed to ask for help for Meghan sums him up completely. He had campaigned with William and Kate to raise awareness for mental health issues. He would have known about the importance of therapy from his military career. If he wimped out of helping his wife when she needed it he shows himself up as a self-centred, spoilt individual who will always need mothering.

Apparently there was four hours of this guff so some of the answers may be on the cutting room floor.

I thought she was dreadful before and am even more sure of it now. Harry makes me very cross - the Queen and Philip have been so good to him and he shows a total lack of respect. Does anyone else wonder why Meghan stuck the comments out until she had had her day of amazing publicity? Cost we, the tax payer of GB, a fortune and now she turns like a rabid dog on those who guided and looked after her.

I didn't watch the programme - too long - and watched the one on BBC about the 1971 beauty contest. More interesting probably but I fell asleep during it and went to bed early.

I have watched Suits all the way through and thought that MM was very much like her character in that - rather goody goody. In the photos of her and Harry when their engagement was announced she was looking at him with doe eyes which surprised me. I thought that perhaps she was imitating the photos of Diana ad Charles when their engagement was announced and imitating them.

However, I did think that she was a breath of fresh air and would help the RF to modernize. I remember the photos of her and the Queen at Wimbledon and she was laughing and smiling when chatting to HM and HM was actually laughing too. I thought that was such a rare sight and that she was obviously happy with MM. Sadly, I think that they have trashed the RF, more so than Andrew's behaviour.

At the point where she talked about not wanting to live anymore I was shocked and appalled and then I remembered that she is at the end of the day, an actress.

Regarding the baby’s skin colour, wouldn’t we all have wondered in the same situation. I would have but it wouldn’t have been in a racist way whatsoever, just curiosity. If they had questioned whether the baby would have ginger hair would they have had the same reaction? I doubt it.

I agree with this. I think some heavy footed royal asked the question and she chose to take it the wrong way and twist it to racism. I think it was a question anyone might have asked, just out of interest.
I thought at the beginning that she was a breath of fresh air but it's become increasingly clear that she wanted the star role. Sorry dear, those roles are already allocated and you are (or would have been) just a bit player.

GagaJo thank you. They have missed a trick. My DIL in NZ told me last night in our WhatsApp group, that New Zealand being a multi racial and fairly accepting society that they were thrilled with the Duchess joining and perhaps ushering in a modernising of the Royal Family that better reflected the diversity of the commonwealth. However now the question of a New Zealand becoming a republic is gathering strength again and I don’t blame them. I believe Jacinda Arden is for it, but does not push for it knowing her citizens wishes. I do believe the U.K tabloids share the blame, spouting unchecked filth, my husband has become a complete zealot from reading the sun and daily mail and in part his being ‘under the influence’ has changed my political outlook.

Bet you there’s going to be LOADS of photos for the American press of the baby daughter this summer! It’s not going to be a black & white teasing ‘foot photo’. I’d put money on it!

Even between the two of them they remembered things differently, she said she had asked HR? for help and was told to get on with it, he said he couldn't ask for help as he was too embarrassed. She said the remark about the baby's colour was made during her pregnancy, he said it was made before the wedding. What else was just made up, after all without a bit of sensation who was going to want an interview. I have not had my opinion changed.

Suicidal! Her husband is involved with several mental health charities. Surely if she was so ill he would have taken her to seek treatment. How cruel to make these accusations when his grandad is in hospital and obviously quite poorly. Now she’s starting on her dad again, saying he betrayed her. Want to be out of the limelight they say, then do interviews on TV. Wonder how much they got for that. Stay in America and play ‘poor me’ with all the plastic celebs you seem to like to mix with and please don’t come back here.

I genuinely don't think that the UK is excessively racist. You only have to look at the tv programmes where there are mixed race couples and the tv adverts that have mixed race families. In the past American tv wouldn't have mixed race couples - although that has now changed America is much more racist than us.

There's an old documentary series which is occasionally repeated, about African American blues musicians who toured the UK. They were amazed (and pleased) at the reaction they got from white audiences and also that there was no segregation in hotels and restaurants.

The outrage in America seems to be mainly from the actors and starts in LA - they are forgetting that racism is far worse in their country than it is in the UK.
