Morning, I don’t have any idea why, but I had a yearning for a Royal Scot biscuit yesterday! Anyone else have a longing for now unavailable food?

We have a shop specialising in old fashioned sweets but they are never as I remember them as a child. I loved flying saucers filled with sherbet, ropes of liquorice, Barrett’s sweet cigarettes, liquorice all sorts. The modern versions seem meaner and less flavoursome and, of course, you would never get sweet cigarettes now. Every Saturday, my modest pocket money would all be spent on these. A childhood filled with visits to the dentist!

Lincoln biscuits, I can smell them now. Lovely

Weekend chocolates and candies in a box. They were always my favourite choc box. The lime fondant ones were my favourite.

Does anyone remember the old penny lollies? One suck and you had plain ice on a stick!

I used to save my pocket money and would buy Old Jamaica chocolate bar and would make it last for 2 or 3 days..They brought it back again recently but somehow it wasn't the same.

When I was a child I was so addicted to Lyons square apricot fruit pies that my Mum took me to the GP as she was worried about my diet. I would love one now. I would also like to try another Aztec bar.

Gray Dunn's Hampden wafers! Loved them when I was wee.

Does anyone remember sweets coming off ration for the Queen's Coronation in June 1953. I liked Refreshers ,Spangles and Aniseed balls.Sadly I became a diabetic (aged 10 )eight months later ,and that was the end of sweets. I do however indulge occasionally and still enjoy aniseed balls .

I used to love Four Boys chocolate bars ( just chocolate, not filled with anything). I think it was imprinted with pictures of boys heads on it. Not many people seem to remember it, am I imagining it?

I used to buy frozen plaice in breadcrumbs filled with prawns in a white wine sauce. They seem to have stopped doing them although I look every time I shop there just in case. Not only were they delicious but it was a really easy meal with some frozen veg! I must write to Tesco and ask if they are still available anywhere. The last time I got them I really wished I'd filled my freezer up!

My local newsagents sold Chocolate Covered Dates that were weighed out for you as were Liquorice Allsorts.

My DH remembers Four Boys chocolate boys, but I don't. He's mentioned them before. So you haven't made it up!

Waitrose still sell Cafe Noir biscuits and they are just as good!

My husband loved Royal Scott biscuits.

Does anyone know a good old fashioned butterscotch like Keillers. I have tried many but they are nothing like it.

Grandma jet I have a friend who is a Caramac addict. Morrisons seems to be where she buys her stash.

Veenus Wed 10-Mar-21 12:32:50

I used to love American Cream Soda sherbet with a liquorice oar to dip in. Sherbet dabs don't last 2 seconds whereas the oars lasted ages smile

My DH just googled the Five Boys bar. I remembered the wrapper with the different faces on it. The first one in tears, but gradually cheered up, presumably when he got the chocolate!

Well it’s a treat that is only not available because of lockdown but I really miss Costa toast!

I'm really intrigued by this.
Why, or how, is it so special and different to bog standard toast?
Thank you!

I would love to get my hands on a chocolate bar I haven’t seen in years called Country Style (I think). It was a gingham style wrapper with a lady on the front.

highlanddreams Wed 10-Mar-21 12:54:43

another vote here for horlicks tablets, aztec bars & also cabana bars were fabulous I really miss those. The lime candy from a box of weekend chocolates or the butterscotch from a box of black magic, yum! My favourite biscuit used to be caramel cookies, I think the were made by Peak Freans maybe ? They were darkish smooth flat biscuit, square with rounded corners, not to sweet but just perfect with a cuppa. I've never seen them for years & really miss them. They weren't expensive either.

Nestle Sweetheart. My aunt always had tins in her cupboard when I was a child. Pear flavour was my fav, strawberry coming in a close second. You whisked milk in it and it made a yummy pudding.

No-body has mentioned Lion bars which I could buy in the 40/50s
They were a special treat but my mother would allow us to buy 1 oz. of sweets each daily on her account. They should cost no more than 6d a quarter and would be secured by Mrs Bunce, the shopkeeper, in a brown conical bag
It must have been during rationing time so i do not really know how it was managed

*GagaJo*. I think you are talking about Fry’s Five Boys, which had five rather sickly fruit flavoured creams. The boys in question all had very rosy cheeks and what my mother used to call turnip top hairstyles.

My recollection of five boys was of five rectangles of chocolate which depicted the boy going through five stages of emotion from happy (because he had the full bar of chocolate) to crying (because it was the last rectangle).

I think the one Gagajo is talking about is Five Centres, with each segment having a different fruit flavoured fondant

I am loving this thread - so many memories being brought back. Mint Cracknell, which my dad loved, and which could slice your tongue open grin
