Morning, I don’t have any idea why, but I had a yearning for a Royal Scot biscuit yesterday! Anyone else have a longing for now unavailable food?

Callard & Bowser butterscotch with individual gold wrappers - their striped liquorice toffee, their luxury nougat! ?

SO lovely, SUCH a treat.

Blue sapphire: Oh those biscuits with the hard coffee icing on them! Where did they go? I loved them because they weren't too sweet, and because hardly any cakes or biscuits have a strong taste of coffee. I used to make coffee ice cream for dinner parties, but now I don't have dinner parties if I make some I'll end up eating it all myself. Can never see why chocolate's such a big deal and not coffee. I want to try Waitrose mocha hot cross buns - it's a forty minute walk for me to Waitrose which should burn off the calories in advance!

Liquorice root. It was like pieces of wood and when you bit through it was a sweet liquorice taste. I think they were 2 pieces for a halfpenny.
I also remember eating locust beans too.

polnan - I was given a small bag of Licquorice Allsorts recently and I thought ‘Oh goody goody’. My joy was short lived however! They were so different to the originals - hard and virtually tasteless and there were more little pieces of plain licquorice than I remember from the past. Time marches on and so much changes but at least we can have fun recalling so many simple things.

Grandma jet snap! I’ve been looking for it for several years but have found it at B&M stores and amazon, also a few corner shops sell it

EllanVannin Wed 10-Mar-21 11:22:43

Didn't like the small hard sticks of liquorice, they were bitter.

On the way home from school I used to buy a little square sweet called Fruit Salads. They were four for a penny ! Not seen them for decades ?

Bags of sherbet, I would dip my finger in the bag.
Peanut cracknell

Boiled eggs, cheese, butter, chicken, minted lamb, roast beef. And so much more. After years of stomach problems I've been diagnosed with egg and lactose intolerance, I'm also a diabetic and since being put on folic acid cannot stand meat. I still have a tasty diet but I do miss some foods, but to be pain free it's worth it.

I often would love to try something I was so fond of in my school days but never see nowadays ..tiger nuts yummy

Another vote here for Fry's Five Centres. I still buy Fry's Chocolate Cream. We used to have Lucky Numbers chocolates as a treat. Also those bars of chocolate with a different filling in each bit. Cadburys I think. Like a box of Milk Tray but in a bar.

Lexisgranny Wed 10-Mar-21 11:38:44

Kate1949 there were two bars that you may remember, the Cadbury’s Milk Tray one, and another called Caley Tray

Hildagard Wed 10-Mar-21 11:41:40

Gooseberry Creams from the original Quality Street Box! Sound revolting but were absolutely yummy - BRING THEM BACK PLEEEZE
(A tin [yes, tin] of Quality Street was always bought at Christmas in our house - a great treat)

These are the peeled ones which I buy quite often - but they also do the tougher ones with all the skin on.

I’d forgotten about Horlicks tablets, Foxglove! I used to be rather addicted to them which probably helps to account for the state of my teeth.

I can remember hating Ovaltine as a drink, but would eat it by the spoonful when no one was about. I even remember spending my whole pocket money on a tin to eat.

nanaanne Wed 10-Mar-21 11:51:39

Sue Lindsey- Me too! In fact I was craving it so much I ordered a block of marzipan and a bar of plain chocolate with my last Sainsbury’s delivery- and made chocolate covered marzipan balls!

NotSpaghetti Wed 10-Mar-21 11:54:20

EllanVannin
Lots of "wholefood" type shops still stock this.

But be wary if you have high blood pressure.

Old Jamaica chocolate. Can still watch the advert in my mind’s eye. Tiffin chcolate bar with the little biscuits in. Potato puffs. Oh the grease ... LOL. Proper walnut whips. And yes. The bars of Milk Tray

Well it’s a treat that is only not available because of lockdown but I really miss Costa toast!

Growing0ldDisgracefully Wed 10-Mar-21 11:57:33

My grandad used to have bags of raspberry ruffles, and Nuttals Mintos (not sure of spelling?) and I found a lovely little shop in Bath which sells all of those sorts of sweets - pear drops, pineapple chunks, sweet peanuts, rhubarb and custard sweets, etc. All sold loose from jars, and wrapped in a paper bag the way sweets used to be sold. . I so hope thus shop has survived the lockdown and a return visit will possible in the future. Its near the Abbey, if anyone on here is planning a visit to Bath one fine day.
