On the ‘Grace’ threads, many of you said that John Simm was not how you pictured the hero after reading the books.

I always felt Leslie Howard was totally wrong to play Ashley Wilkes in ‘Gone With The Wind’. Scarlett O’Hara would never have fancied him, but he was the studio’s choice.

Any other thoughts on miscasting, either films or tv?

Olivia Colman in The Crown. I never saw anyone less regal.

Riverwalk

Lucca

Richard chamberlain as Ralph de Bricassart in the Thorn Birds.....he should have been dark haired and dark eyed and sexy ......

As soon as I read the thread title I thought of this most terrible miscasting!

After all these decades grin

Glad it’s not just me !

Nicholas Cage as captain Corelli similarly.

Matthew Macfadyen as Fitzwilliam Darcy in ‘Pride and Predjudice’

I didn't think Colin Firth was particularly well cast as George V1 in the King's Speech but he went on to win an Oscar nevertheless.

My husband was incandescent about Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher too short!! The problem is when we've read a book and engaged with the character we will have pre conceived ideas about how that person should look.

I'll probably think of some more.

Definitely Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. In the books Reacher was 6ft 7 I think Cruise is a midget but I guess his ego is much bigger than he is!

Parsley3 Sun 21-Mar-21 17:20:22

Another one here who thinks Tom Cruise is miscast as the storylines in the books are based around Reacher’s great height and size.
I hesitate to mention Douglas Henschell as Jimmy Perez because I like him so much in the roll, but Jimmy is described as being dark haired following his Spanish heritage in the books. I wouldn’t change the TV casting though.

Calendargirl Sun 21-Mar-21 17:25:40

Agree about Douglas Henshall, nothing like how the book describes him, but good in the role.

Do the casting directors actually read the book and think ‘Mm, really must try and find someone to play the part who looks nothing like the author describes?’

Oh I thought he was marvellous in the kings speech but then I am a total Colin Firth fan??

GillT57 Sun 21-Mar-21 17:38:36

I agree about Dougie Henshaw, great actor and very good in the role but i find it hard to reconcile his Scottish red haired looks with the back story of his heritage being Spanish, hence the name Perez. Also, in Grace last week, after accepting John Simm as Grace (not as I had imagined him) I then had to cope with "the hard faced blonde with a sharp haircut" ie Alison Vosper being played by a black actor!

My husband is a great fan of the "Sharpe" novels by Bernard Cornwell. He always complained about the casting in the televised version: apparently Sharpe was a dark-haired Cockney and nothing like Sean Bean.
I've never read the books, so I was quite happy to watch him ?

As a nine year old tomboy I couldn't wait to see The Alamo having read all about Davey Crocket in my brother's Eagle comic.

John Wayne was a crushing disappointment in the sexy hero department! grin

Calendargirl Sun 21-Mar-21 18:37:10

The Bridges Of Madison County.

I’m sorry Clint, (Eastwood). I know you had bought the rights to the book and I assume you directed it, but you were just too old for the part.

And Meryl Streep, no. In the book, Francesca was more attractive, more Latin, and not frumpy.

EllanVannin Sun 21-Mar-21 20:06:35

I don't mind Brenda Blethyn as Vera because I can't think of anyone else who would play such a natural part as she does.

I agree Grandma70s I've never seen anyone as far removed from royalty as Olivia Colman----can't stand the woman.

Vigo Mortensen as Aragorn in Lord of the Rings.

Far too weedy.

Oh no, he was lovely!

I fell asleep, that film was so riveting.

Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia? No, no, no. I only watched a bit, though, so perhaps I shouldn't judge.

I never liked Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret in The Crown - she tends to play every part the same. Far preferred Vanessa Kirby from first two seasons, there was a vulnerability/fragility in her portrayal which worked very well. I was also never quite sure about Shaun Evans as Endeavour-seemed to be very light for a character that developed into the irascible Morse. Even his voice was literally too light. . .

Ashley Jensen as Agatha Raisin in TV series.
Scottish accent and blond hair.

JenniferEccles Sun 21-Mar-21 22:18:42

Initially I had thought Dennis Waterman was miscast as Terry McCann in Minder years ago as I felt he wasn’t enough of a tough guy but I gradually did get used to him in the part.

gulligranny Sun 21-Mar-21 22:27:44

Every single role in the most recent film version of Little Women! All awful but in particular Timothee Chalamet as Lawrie - who's idea of a joke was that?

I will now duck behind the parapet as I tell you all that for me Sean Connery just wasn't James Bond. Where was the "comma of black hair" and "the steely grey-blue eyes"?

My easy going DH was also raging about Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. The author described him as being about 6 feet 5 inches.

Casdon Sun 21-Mar-21 22:42:24

Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma - just no.

Matthew Macfadyen as Fitzwilliam Darcy in ‘Pride and Predjudice’

But absolutely nobody could have followed Colin Firth.

Blossoming Sun 21-Mar-21 23:24:26

A very old one. Michael Caine as Alan Breck Stewart in the 1971 film of ‘Kidnapped’. The accent!

Also Dick Van Duke’s cheeky cock er nee in Mary Poppoms.

Chestnut Sun 21-Mar-21 23:42:56

Pip in Great Expectations has twice disappointed me. I thought John Mills too old in the original version. And the more recent version had Douglas Booth (see picture) who was badly miscast. Far too handsome and glamorous, not a rough lad working as a farrier.
