Miscast Actors/Actresses.

On the ‘Grace’ threads, many of you said that John Simm was not how you pictured the hero after reading the books.

I always felt Leslie Howard was totally wrong to play Ashley Wilkes in ‘Gone With The Wind’. Scarlett O’Hara would never have fancied him, but he was the studio’s choice.

Any other thoughts on miscasting, either films or tv?

Hayden Christensen in Star Wars

Nicole Kidman playing Virginia Woolf with a false nose!?
Keira Knightly as the author Colette. Knightly tall and gangly, Colette petite and round.

Robert Carlyse as Hamish McBeth. In the books he's a 6ft lanky red head. But then again, the series bore very little resemblance to the books.

I briefly looked at the Tudors on Netflix, until I saw the weedy, dark haired actor playing Henry V111.
Equivalent of Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher.

Richard Briers in Monarch Of The Glen on tv a few years ago now.

He was playing a laird, owner of a Scottish estate.

Would have seemed more appropriate to choose a Scottish actor.

Plus he was all wrong for the role, seemed to be a silly old buffoon.

I'm another who thinks Tom Cruise was totally wrong as Reacher. He is about a foot shorter and not as heavy as described in the books (although he did look heavier in the last film - but that wasn't muscle!!!)

Daniel Craig as James Bond. He looks nothing like Sean Connery! ?

harrigran Mon 22-Mar-21 09:19:32

Tom Cruise as Reacher, not believable.
None of the characters in Grace were right for the part.
Brenda Blethyn is fine as Vera, she is not a Geordie as such but brought up in Northumbria and there is a difference in the accent.
Line of duty last night had us fuming, needed subtitles for the Scottish woman, she muttered and mumbled.

Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy in The Handmaid's Tale. Atwood develops SJ as an older woman, with arthritic hands. Her age was supposed to be part of the 'disgust' about handing a baby over to her.

The actress does a good job. But she just doesn't fit the character.

I can only think of casting I like rather than think was miscast. The Darling Buds of May and the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice being two I think were perfectly cast.

I agree with another poster about Olivia Coleman, who I really like normally but not in that role.

Lucca I am in shock. Vigo was weedy - he was perfect!!!

I do like Daniel Craig as an actor but he's not JB for me not sophisticated and urbane enough - more of a brawler.

I didn’t say he was weedy !!!

Can’t find any reference to BB being brought up in Northumberland, just Ramsgate?
As a Geordie born I found her accent wrong sorry.

Peasblossom

Richard Gere in Indecent Proposal.

I mean, come on, like he’d have to pay the woman a million pounds to sleep with him.

It should have been someone sleazy and repulsive.

So perfectly cast then smile

Lucca Mon 22-Mar-21 10:13:15

Harrigran I may have misunderstood....is it the character Vera who was brought up in Northumberland?

henetha Mon 22-Mar-21 10:21:06

Totally agree about Olivia Coleman as the Queen. I thought she was dreadful. Sorry Olivia, I like you in other parts.

Tom Cruise was physically nowhere near the size of Jack Reacher but he acted the character so well that I stopped minding the disparity after a few minutes.
Shaun Evans I also thought acted the young Morse very well. Look closely and you see mannerisms that John Thaw employed. I could see him developing into the more mature Morse, somewhat ground down and disappointed in much of humanity.

4allweknow Mon 22-Mar-21 10:41:03

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher only happened as he bought the film rights. Travesty that he took the role. John Simm as Grace didn't seem to fit well either but not as badly as Tom Cruise did.

Daisymae Mon 22-Mar-21 10:45:21

Cliff Richard playing Heathcliff. His wailing of 'Caathyyyy, Cathyyyy' will stay with me forever. He grew some stubble to look mean, but he's just not a mean guy. I believe he funded the production, so guess he could play what role he wanted. Sorry fans.

minxie Mon 22-Mar-21 10:53:01

Agatha Raisen is a plump grumpy brunette from Brum, not a slim blonde from Scotland.
Don’t get me started on the vicar and his wife how much they were changed

Moggycuddler Mon 22-Mar-21 11:06:18

Viggo Mortensen was a brilliant Aragorn!! And I thought he WAS brooding and sexy!

Nell8 Mon 22-Mar-21 11:07:16

I really enjoyed following The West Wing until Martin Sheen had his teeth replaced by a weird looking set which altered the way he spoke. They were an infuriating distraction so I gave up watching .... a case of miscast gnashers?

Boz Mon 22-Mar-21 11:07:59

How about Kevin Costner talking about the Sheriff of Nottnam!

jaylucy Mon 22-Mar-21 11:08:19

Sorry, don't agree with the comments about Richard Chamberlain - but then I have always had a thing about him since Dr Kildare !
There's quite a few I could mention in various films/TV programmes and often wonder if the producers have even read the book !

Grandmajean Mon 22-Mar-21 11:12:32

Nell8 - We watch The West Wing over and over as have had the box set for years. I have never noticed Martin Sheen's change of teeth ! Around which series did it happen? I am now going to have to find the new teeth !
