On the ‘Grace’ threads, many of you said that John Simm was not how you pictured the hero after reading the books.

I always felt Leslie Howard was totally wrong to play Ashley Wilkes in ‘Gone With The Wind’. Scarlett O’Hara would never have fancied him, but he was the studio’s choice.

Any other thoughts on miscasting, either films or tv?

I rarely think people are miscast, sometimes not what I was expecting but if I enjoy watching then it's fine. The most perfect casting I have ever seen was Phil Collins as Buster Edwards, I forgot I was watching Phil Collins! Oh and Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser in Outlander, I would not have cast him but he is brilliant.

David Jason as Rincewind in The Colour of Magic. Not tall or skinny enough, and rather too old.

He had always wanted to play the part, but was wrong for Rincewind.

Richard Gere in Indecent Proposal.

I mean, come on, like he’d have to pay the woman a million pounds to sleep with him.

It should have been someone sleazy and repulsive.

I thought it was Robert Redford?

RobinHorn Mon 22-Mar-21 11:24:17

It was Robert Redford I’m pretty sure.

Grandmajean Sorry I can't give exact reference as ours went to the charity shop ages ago, but it was perhaps three quarters of the way through. If you didn't notice them I'd let sleeping dogs lie! For me they were a bit like thisgrin

Channing Tatum in The Eagle of the Ninth. That was a book I have loved since childhood and I was so looking forward to a film of it. What a let down. Channing Tatum as a young Latin looking Marcus Aquila? I have given my DVD to my grandsons. They enjoyed it but having read and loved the book I can't watch it with any enjoyment.

I just hated James Bond being played by the ugly blond chap in Skyfall. Who would fancy him? I've forgotten his name... I will remember it soon... I hope...

I think that some acts are hard to follow as sometimes the characterisation of the book hero is so good;
Joan Hickson WAS Marple
Rupert Davies WAS Maigret
Colin Firth WAS Darcy
John Thaw WAS Morse

BBbevan I love that version of Pride & Prejudice. I thought Matthew Macfadyen was a brilliant Mr Darcy, all silent and brooding.

Boz. Absolutely!

Santana Totally agree re The Tudors. Jonathan Rhys Meyers; fine actor and handsome but so miscast as Henry VIII. To small, dark and weedy to play horrible Henry.

Too

When I read the Tom Thorne books Neil Pearson was in my head before I knew he had played him ..I am a fan of John Simm but he is not how I pictured Grace...he played the part well though... and I can't actually think of anyone else...

Yes I agree about Tom Cruise. He didn't fit the description of Jack Reacher

Nell8 - We watch The West Wing over and over as have had the box set for years. I have never noticed Martin Sheen's change of teeth ! Around which series did it happen? I am now going to have to find the new teeth !

I am just about to embark on The West Wing, I am a bit daunted by the fact that there are 7 series but I just watched all three series of The Newsroom also by Aaron Sorkin which I absolutely loved so am seeking out more of his work.

Another one.

Nice Work by David Lodge.

Great book, but when televised they put Warren Clarke in the main role. Never cared for him as an actor and totally wrong for the part. Haydn Gwynn played the female lead, she was perfect.

Hello all, been lurking for a while but this is my first post.
I think there's some confusion between Indecent Proposal with Robert Redford as the rich man who offers Demi Moore $1 million for one night, and Richard Gere as the businessman who buys the services of prostitute Julia Roberts. Neither man looks like they'd need to hire a woman, and JR makes an unlikely prostitute. Great movies though!

West Side Story is one of my all time favourite films but I always thought Richard Beymer was totally mis cast as Tony, he was supposed to be a streetwise gang leader but came across as tough as lard.

Agree about Brenda Blethyn as Vera, seems to end every sentence with "Pet" - don't think she was brought up in Northumberland.

Also though Jenna Coleman was wrong as Victoria - far too slim and pretty

The Bridges Of Madison County.

I’m sorry Clint, (Eastwood). I know you had bought the rights to the book and I assume you directed it, but you were just too old for the part.

And Meryl Streep, no. In the book, Francesca was more attractive, more Latin, and not frumpy.

Oh. I hated Clint Eastwood in Bridges. When they did the love scene I thought his hairy back was the fur rug in front of fire to represent having done the deed. ?

This one happened in 1975 and I still haven't fully recovered. !

Malcolm McDowell as Flashman .

They initially thought Flashman would be as popular as James Bond.. and he would have been, had it been properly cast !!

Bellocchild Mon 22-Mar-21 12:30:48

Jack Farthing as George Warleggan in Poldark. He should have been a blacksmith's grandson: short, stocky and thickset.

Lesley60 Mon 22-Mar-21 12:39:00

Just look at half of the cast in Emmerdale and coronation street half of those are miscast they have a cheek to call themselves actors.

SueEH Mon 22-Mar-21 12:44:01

Kamiso

Uhtred in Bernard Cornwell’s Last kingdom series! In the books he towered over other men and his great height intimidated his foe. In the series he’s about the same height as the other characters.

I am used to it now and treat the books and tv series as two separate entities.

I agree but Alexander Dreymon is quite easy on the eye ?

Pretty certain it was Richard Gere. I’ll look it up.

It was definitely Robert Redford.
