I think I have almost decided not to continue having gel nails. I have not missed the 'tyranny' of 3 week apart appointments plus the rising cost c£40 during the lockdown.
Anyone else had a change of heart about something they regularly did pre-pandemic?
Oh yes and no longer wear my dangly earrings when I go out as the facemask tends to rip them off!
Stopped colouring my hair. Also seem to have lost interest in clothes shopping after months with the shops closed.
Hate beauty treatments and still do, so no change there!
Me, too, have tried biotin and zinc as well as vitamin D and nothing helps. My nails do grow in the summer though when they are obviously getting more vitamin D. They are quite nice for the last couple of days of August and I have even managed to paint them then, but on 1 September they all break off again. I can set my calendar by them.
I take a daily dose of vitamin D, but have never noticed any difference to my nails, they still flake and split ?
My hands are in soil too much these days for me to get too excited about the looks of my nails. I love to see them painted but it lasts all of a day or two until it chips. I do wear gloves for rough gardening - brambles etc.
I'd love to know how women cope with these very long nails.
- Putting on makeup?
- Putting pierced earrings in?
- Buttoning up or zips?
- Opening a ring can?
- Using toilet roll
Ouch!
I did think this was about the DIY product.
Booked in for eyelash tint and pedicure. I think I’m going to carry on growing my hair and just carry on covering my grey roots like I’ve done for last year and give up the £60 haircut/ colour.
I've been doing my own hair colour during lockdown. As its lighter now it doesn't need doing so often.
It wasn't a hard decision to make as the last time I went, just before lockdown, they did the colour so badly that I knew I could do it better myself. I used to get the roots done every three weeks, now I do it less often. Although I do have to spend more on good conditioner it is nowhere near as much as my very expensive hairdresser's colour.
I used to have a mid-length bob but now my straight hair is longer and much easier to dry. My daughter is trimming round the bottom every 6 weeks or so and I do my own fringe. I suppose I may eventually go for a proper haircut but certainly will let it grow a lot longer between "proper" cuts.
I've heard such horror stories of the price rises imposed by hairdressing chains recently that this has strengthened my resolve!
The one thing I really miss is going for a massage which I used to do regularly. We've moved house and local salons are so expensive that I may not have one again, though I will keep looking.
I no longer have my hair coloured or highlighted. The grey is growing through. I can’t be bothered and I like not spending the money
Well said, Baggs and Savvy! I don't care what others feel the need to do, I just don't want to feel that I am somehow less worthy in any way because I choose not to. I certainly never wanted my daughters to grow up thinking that they had to glam up or my sons to look at the outside package to make a judgement.
What I would like to know is what ladies who choose to glam up their nails, hair, tans etc, all the time do to have their extra special "spoiling themselves moment?" The one think I love about special occasions is going the extra mile with a set of gel nails or similar. As much as I like that treat, I am sure that if it was a regular occurrence it would become a chore.
I have had my nails done in the past but my natural nails, never strong to start with, just suffer enormously. I also have used false nails from Boots but the glue turns my nails green for weeks afterwards. Not a great look!
Mine would be buying so many clothes. My wardrobes are bulging, some still have tags on, so I'm going to wear what I already have. It will save me a fortune.
I agree. I’ll never have shellac nail polish again. My nails took ages to recover during this last year. And it will save me a fortune every three weeks. !
I had gel nails put on once and felt it was a waste of money having to keep going back every 3 weeks. I do lots of cooking and gardening so I just opt for a coat of nail varnish. I am having my very plucked out eyebrows microbladed though, a friend had hers done and they look lovely and natural, and as far as my hair goes I would not try to save money doing it at home. My hair is highlighted and the grey roots touched up regularly. Not ready for grey ever.
Message withdrawn at poster's request.
My nails are awful and I'd rather not emphasise them.
However, I spent £80 on a cut, clour and blow dry on the first day it was possible to do so and, far from thinking about discontinuing it, I have booked for two more appointments at monthly intervals.
The Lockdown teaches us we know neither the hour nor the day so carpe deim.
I agree. That will save me £25. Every four weeks for shellac varnish. It took ages for my nails to recover. Never again !
Another fan of vitamin D here as well. It definitely makes your nails grow and your hair.
When I was able to work, I worked in an office where all the women, including management, valued how they looked over how well they did their jobs. Even the female co-owner of the business apologised to me once because she hasn't had her nails done!
I didn't stay in that place long, I was glad to get away from such a vain and vacuous crowd.
I wouldn't have that put on my nails-can't do them any good
Got my hair cut and blown dry last week. Looks better and I feel better when I look in the mirror. Colour it myself now and although a bit messy looks fine. Sometimes put some normal nail polish on but avoid gel. Will not have so many blow dries now as managed OK during lockdown
I started taking a general vitamin, fish oil and folic acid about 18 months ago my nails have been amazingly strong and my hair thick and shiny (also stopped dying and let the grey / white shine through). To be honest feels fabulous not having to bother, celebrating my 30 year anniversary tomorrow and husband has barely noticed I’ve stopped dying hair and likes my natural colour!
Honestly ladies try omega 3 fish oils etc it really does make a difference and you just need cheapy ones from B&M.
But flip side I think a lot of us like the social side of visits to salon. Especially for special occasions so if you can afford it enjoy it ?
My daughter has her gel nails done every 5 weeks or so. It is her special treat and makes her feel so good about herself which as a busy mum she needs (although how she manages to change nappies with them, I’ll never know!). I have a gel manicure but just with the gel polish as my own nails grow very strong (and long if I let them!). I bought one of those little machines that dry the gel using uv light or something and one of my daughters does it for me so my manicure costs me very little indeed and looks pretty good. Something to be said for your own nails although I don’t blame anyone for using a bit of fakery! Now about my wrinkles......!
I only have a manicure for something like a wedding and I’ve stopped colouring my hair. I may sound boring, but it’s all about having a choice.
Totally beyond me why women prance about with artificial nails. What is their Agenda? Perhaps 'I don't do housework or any other sort of work.'?
And of course one's natural nails will wither etc. - they cannot 'breathe'. Ditto toe nails.
A natural pair of hands, beautifully presented cannot be beaten.
I'm not going back to the hairdressers. I've been cutting my hair all through the lockdowns and it doesn't look too bad. I'll be saving myself about £500 a year.
Looking forward to a manicure but I never have nails varnished unless I’m going to a very posh do and wearing mil’s diamond ring. Varnish would come off the next day as I hate the feel of it (nuts I know). Love having a pedicure and varnish but not gel, I’ve heard a lot of negative comments about the stuff.
