Hello Everyone!
Boring but Potentially Divisive Thread Alert

Do you wash brand new clothes?

There was a thread about this a while ago on MN.

Apparently, new clothes can actually be quite dirty and germy.

I've recently bought quite a few new dresses and I'm genuinely torn whether to wash them or not (I know; first world probs and all that).

Wash or not? ?

I haven’t before but I saw something on that too so I think I will from now on! Haven’t bought anything new in a year!

Blackcat3 Mon 19-Apr-21 11:32:00

No, never thought about it.....but I am now........!
Especially as I’ve heard of online (and high street) shoppers wearing items with the tags on...then returning them.....eeewwww!

Eventually,

No I don’t except of course for towels to improve their absorbency.

However I do remember washing new baby clothes when I was expecting.

I can still remember the thrill and excitement of seeing all these tiny babygrows, nighties and nappies blowing on the line in the garden of our first home.

No. And I think its a weird question to be honest.

Maybe you have not ever questioned it before , its the
chemical bit that bothers me the most, there's enough
of them in everything we do so if some can be elimanted
I'm all for it.

My goodness, Absolutely NO!!! Are people really so concerned as to how clean the people in the factories are? Surely not - anybody ever got any sort of illness from new clothes yet? Managed to get through eighty years without even thinking about such a thing.
Honestly, are some people really so scared about every little germ etc around. Tha way lies madness!!!!

Alioop Mon 19-Apr-21 11:39:29

Always wash new jeans because of the dye rubbing off on sofas, etc

GillT57 Mon 19-Apr-21 11:39:34

It has never occurred to me. Baby clothes, bedding, towels to remove stiffness but otherwise, not. If I though too much about who had touched what/sat on a chair/used the same cutlery in a restaurant I would never step outside the door.

Not...washed clothes never look as good as brand new ones no matter how carefully you do it. Most bacteria doesn't live long on fabrics so the worry about invisible dirt isn't a consideration for me. To be honest, there is bacteria everywhere and I'd go mad if I started to really think about it. I wonder how many people have been ill after wearing new clothes. If I had actually experienced that, I'd probably be more cautious.

Trisha57 I wash underwear because of the the fabric finish on them makes me itch.

Me too, I use sensitive laundry detergent for most underwear.

GrannyGear Mon 19-Apr-21 11:58:37

Only if I've bought them from a charity shop.

Juneandarchie1 Mon 19-Apr-21 12:01:28

No, it never feels quite so new once it’s been washed ?

Speldnan Mon 19-Apr-21 12:09:48

Not usually depending on what the item is, once washed I always feel jumpers in particular lose that nice new look.

HillyN Mon 19-Apr-21 12:12:11

I would only wash if they looked grubby, were too stiff or smelled unpleasant. However I always steam iron them to kill any bugs or parasites. They usually need a press anyway.

Froglady Mon 19-Apr-21 12:13:59

I always wash new bras as I find them itchy if I don't but nothing else.

Corkie91 Mon 19-Apr-21 12:17:30

No way

ElderlyPerson Mon 19-Apr-21 12:21:44

Yes always. I always have.

Someone mentioned ironing. I don't do that.

Almost everything, including pullovers and jumpers, except not jackets and coats.

I have hand washed underwear and the water goes blue!

Packs often advise washing before wearing.

By the way, at least one mail order company has a repackaging department, so that if anything is returned, it goes to the repackaging department to be repackaged, so just because it looks new and in its original packaging does not mean that it actually is!

grandtanteJE65 Mon 19-Apr-21 12:30:32

I always wash new clothes, sheets, tea towels etc.

I am allergic to perfume and most new articles smell of the air fresheners used in the shops.

There can also be a residue of fabric conditioner in new clothes.

Apart from the above, I have no idea how clean or otherwise the factories where these things were made are.

Coloured clothes usually have a surplus of dye in them too and need more than one wash to get rid of that.

Bijou Mon 19-Apr-21 12:35:12

Always wash new clothes etc. Once saw a programme about conditions in factories abroad where they were handled by employees who lived in there and were filthy.
Things returned to mail order companies are repackaged and who knows how they have been handled.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 19-Apr-21 12:37:42

Excuse me, but we are not particularly anxious. We were brought up to wash clothes before wearing them. It was commonly said that they lasted longer that way.

Also, if you read the thread you will see that most of us who wash clothes before starting to wear them do so because we have allergic reactions otherwise.

chris8888 Mon 19-Apr-21 12:39:24

Sometimes, especially things like jeans for trousers as they can have a bit of an industrial smell.

MerylStreep Mon 19-Apr-21 12:43:00

It’s a wonder that some people leave the house. ?
Even more amazing that you’ve reached the age you have with all these germs just waiting to pounce on you.
So really, our immune system is surplus to requirement.
