What on earth is this about? Some weird random thing spreading over the internet.

Esspee Mon 10-May-21 14:02:43

Isn’t bread a staple food? ?

Chestnut Mon 10-May-21 14:06:12

It just seems to be one of those ridiculous things that people do who have too much time on their hands:

What nonsense and dangerous nonsense at that. Bread is bad for young birds.

Santana Mon 10-May-21 14:11:34

Rats must love it!

nanna8 Mon 10-May-21 14:13:20

Bad for the trees, bad for the birds, probably bad for any other unwitting creature not to mention ugly.

Theres numpty`s all over the world.

Oldwoman70 Mon 10-May-21 14:21:33

Sounds like an experiment - think of the most idiotic thing, post it on social media and see how many people will do it too!

How can you staple onto a tree ?

Grannynannywanny Mon 10-May-21 15:12:00

I wonder if it’s the same folk who hang plastic bags of dog poo on trees

Chestnut Mon 10-May-21 15:22:47

Let's hope this doesn't start a craze for hanging other things on trees. It will do no-one any good.

BlueBelle Mon 10-May-21 15:58:50

But what sort of stapler goes through wood ? Do you walk round with a commercial stapler in your handbag .....how ridiculous

felice Mon 10-May-21 16:28:55

Esspee, really cheered me up, ta.

Grannynannywanny Mon 10-May-21 16:30:42

I must have too much time on my hands today. I’ve just googled and this has been an ongoing nonsense for a few years.

There are online communities ( one of the them aptly named Sad and Useless) who share photos of bread they’ve stapled to trees. They even take the time to toast some of it ?

Mollygo Mon 10-May-21 20:15:06

Grannynannywanny do they give any reason for doing it?

Cabbie21 Mon 10-May-21 20:53:08

I only came across it today as some dog owners found their pets’ paws damaged by bits of metal ie staples, presumably fallen off the trees.

Grannynannywanny Mon 10-May-21 20:59:36

No reason mentioned Mollygo. It seems to be yet another daft fad that wouldn’t exist if there was no social media where participants can post/like/brag after doing it.

It’s wassailing, an ancient Druid custom to bless the trees and encourage next year’s harvest

Babs758 Wed 12-May-21 11:18:45

In my area people put their dog's poo into bags and hang that on trees. Yuck!

4allweknow Wed 12-May-21 11:22:09

If it's waissailing, there would be no staples in those days. Dangerous to animals, birds and humans. Last year our local woods became fairy door city. Every tree was basically vandalised with people nailing or screwing wooden pictures some covered in glitter and the further up the tree the bigger the picture. I did measure some,8" x 10". Utter madness.

Better than what was happening here, someone during the night was going around cutting perfectly good trees down, done over several nights, think the police have caught him now though

I thought that wassailing was singing.
