What on earth is this about? Some weird random thing spreading over the internet.

On one of my European coach tours, I remember passing a village, where they hung rags on the trees. Can’t remember where...sorry

What an odd thing to do. There's some weirdos about.

Moogalmum Wed 12-May-21 22:20:17

GreenGran78 you just reminded me that my 3yr old GD calls all ants Gerard! she loves them

I wonder if it’s the same folk who hang plastic bags of dog poo on trees

God that pisses me off. Why pick it up if you’re gonna fling it into a tree encased in plastic??

GreenGran78 Wed 12-May-21 15:59:57

Talking of people posting weird things on Social Media, I came across one on Facebook where people pretend to be ants in an ant colony! You couldn’t make it up!

What an utterly absurd idea where did it come from and what is its purpose I can t see the point it is ridiculous

Some people here who want to kill trees to get a better view from their houses ( usually rich beachside houses) hammer copper nails into the trunk.

Alioop Wed 12-May-21 13:54:40

I haven't even heard of this idiotic thing. Don't understand the point of it, sounds like it causes more harm than good.

Rosina Wed 12-May-21 13:25:46

This is ruinous to trees - bark damage will eventually kill them. What idiots - and what a waste of bread.

homefarm Wed 12-May-21 13:03:43

The staples won't do the trees any good.

annifrance Wed 12-May-21 12:15:46

i'm speechless.

Aepgirl Wed 12-May-21 12:08:36

Never heard of it.

Oldwoman70 Wed 12-May-21 11:59:48

Wassailing is the custom of visiting orchards, drinking copious amounts of cider and reciting incantations to the trees to ensure a good crop of apples. It has nothing to do with stapling, or fixing in any other way, bread to trees.

I speak as someone raised in cider making country!

knspol Wed 12-May-21 11:59:24

If they have nothing better to do with their bread why not donate to a food bank, I'm sure many people would appreciate that.

cupcake1 Wed 12-May-21 11:52:31

Whatever goes on in these peoples minds?!
Madness.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 12-May-21 11:50:23

Surely the Druid custom was to pour drink of some local variety onto the roots of the trees?

I believe trees were customarily given a bowl of cider at Christmas in the cider producing areas of the UK up to the middle of the previous century.

I read at the weekend that a piece of stapled bread was eaten by a dog and the dog had to have emergency , expensive surgery.

Perhaps they could try this instead: www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=309153364143892&set=a.301107071615188

It’s wassailing, an ancient Druid custom to bless the trees and encourage next year’s harvest

I thought that wassailing was singing.

madmum38 Wed 12-May-21 11:22:58

Better than what was happening here, someone during the night was going around cutting perfectly good trees down, done over several nights, think the police have caught him now though

4allweknow Wed 12-May-21 11:22:09

If it's waissailing, there would be no staples in those days. Dangerous to animals, birds and humans. Last year our local woods became fairy door city. Every tree was basically vandalised with people nailing or screwing wooden pictures some covered in glitter and the further up the tree the bigger the picture. I did measure some,8" x 10". Utter madness.

Babs758 Wed 12-May-21 11:18:45

In my area people put their dog's poo into bags and hang that on trees. Yuck!

No reason mentioned Mollygo. It seems to be yet another daft fad that wouldn’t exist if there was no social media where participants can post/like/brag after doing it.

Cabbie21 Mon 10-May-21 20:53:08

I only came across it today as some dog owners found their pets’ paws damaged by bits of metal ie staples, presumably fallen off the trees.
