I'd agree with Peter Ustinov but if a living celebrity it would have to be Sandi Toksvig. She's so clever, well informed, witty and just plain funny.

My long time love (I wish ) George Harrison. Not an intellectual but I thought he was witty and funny. I bet he had a few tales to tell.

Margaret Atwood. The best contemporary writer we have imo. Her dystopian and futuristic novels are eerily prescient but I'd also love to talk to her about her earlier novels and poetry and life in general.

I suppose my great great grandfather is not a celebrity, so my living celebrity would be Michael Caine. He always has some amazing stories and is so fascinating to listen to on chat shows.

I would ask Donald Sutherland simply because I love his drawl although I have no idea what he'd be like, but if he has a story to tell he could just spin it out. I think he's great despite often playing the same sort of character!

Having watched him on Saturday Morning Kitchen, I would be tempted to invite the lovely Jay Blades to dinner. He has obviously had an interesting journey to get to where he is; left school basically illiterate, written off by his teachers, and now works with youngsters showing them how to refurbish, make, learn craft skills. I could ask his advice about the watermark on my dining table while he was there

Imagine having someone like Charles Dickens at the table! I would be completely unable to hold a conversation, so would just have to turn up with a list of questions. Nerve wracking!

I would love Elizabeth I at my table! I would like to ask her the real reason why she never married and if she really was a "virgin" queen! I am one of her greatest admirers. A woman who ruled in what was then regarded as a man's world. What a merry dance she led them all!

He said on tv that he had never had a story read to him as a child, isn’t that sad? Yes, he seems as if he would be a lively and pleasant dinner companion, and easy to get along with.
