I’ve ordered a 2nd sack-of-potatoes dress

Bought the first a few weeks ago, wearing it for the 1st time today. It’s not far off ankle length, sleeves just past elbow length, not the most flattering ever but so cool and comfortable! (Very warm here today.) It’s cotton and linen seersucker but doesn’t crease! So I thought sod it and although it was on the pricey side I’ve ordered another in a different colour.
So if the rest of the summer turns out to be rubbish, you can all blame me. ?
I’m now sitting in the garden with the first G&T of the year, so cheers all! ?

I bought a tunic dress in the White Stuff sale and have no idea why because I dislike leggings and tights.

£229 for a dress is way past my budget.

I bought a baggyish ‘v’ neck linen mix dress today with short sleeves and pockets in a burnt orange from Sainsbury’s for £18. I clocked it as I walked past on the way to buy a sun hat, thinking that’ll do nicely as a cheap and cheerful sundress to take the smalls to the park, kneel down to bath them etc. Nothing special but easy everyday wear.

It’s not a sack of potatoes Witzend! It looks comfortable and airy, just what’s needed as the weather perks up, bet you rock it ?

The one Muse loves is considerably pricier than my sack of potatoes, Urmstongran.

It occurred to me yesterday that I haven’t worn an actual dress since my dd’s wedding in 2015! I had an awful job finding anything for that, and it’s been hanging in the wardrobe ever since. Just the occasional long skirt in summer.

Looks good, don’t think a short fattie would do it justice!

I agree that the dress is much nicer than your description! But not sure I could afford it or look ok in it! I have spent a lot less on clothes since the start of the pandemic and just lately have been 'treating' myself, mainly from Cotton Traders. Am awaiting delivery of an order today! I get really excited when the parcel comes - but very much doubt I will keep all of it. Then after talking to my clothes loving daughter on Sunday she suggested I get some linen mix trousers sooo I have just ordered 2 x pairs - again from Cotton Traders! They are my 'go to' for clothes because I like the clothes (obviously) and returns are so easy. I avoid M&S now because their 'New Easy Returns' are far from it!!

I love Poetry, think that it's better to buy something that you feel good about. Comfort is much higher on the list of priorities than it was. I bought a roomy t shirt dress from JL last year have yet to wear it, probably just for the garden. I'm nearly a foot shorter than most of the models!

I made myself a baggy cotton caftan to wear on hot days. Only at home, not in public! After a hot day I shower and put it on for the evening, cool and relaxing.

It looks nice, good colour too. I wear things like that over bathers at the beach or to walk around the beach areas.

“Thought” has nice dresses, similar price to Poetry.
I don’t have any of their dresses but I have 2 blouses. Very nice thin, cool-to-wear fabric and pretty patterns.

Looking at my wardrobe my dresses veer from the online store Kit & Kaboodle at one end to Sahara at the other! Woolovers are doing several linen dresses some with a half sleeve (!) on their website, good colours and not too bad a price.

It’s a new style called “the Buffet” dress and worth its weight in gold!

I love the clothes in the Poetry catalogue. I do find that dresses tend to blow up a bit with the slightest breeze though. I have a couple of long cotton dresses that I used to wear when it’s hot that went in around the hem (they literally do look like a sack of potatoes) but I can’t wear them with our latest dog because she has a habit of pawing my leg when she wants something or comes up behind me and does it to announce her presence and my legs get scratched.

I bought a lovely new dress from Kaleidoscope. I’m really pleased with it and may wear next week when I go up to London to meet a friend and have afternoon tea with her. Well I’ll wear it if the weather holds.

I like the dress, but I'm small,so everything is too long for me.The models are always about 5ft 10

kittypaws49 Tue 01-Jun-21 10:56:42

Snap ! Just got a similar one from Poetry, it's a linen mix, washed black, and I really like it. But it was much cheaper, around 100 euros. ( My computer does'nt have the pound key ).So comfortable and forgiving to wear and can be jazzed up with some nice beads and earrings.

I have gone into Seasalt tunic dresses this year with jeggings. They are linen or cotton and very comfortable. They make them fbig enough or the traditionally built and I actually think I am pulling off smart casual for the first time in my life

I have just spent way too long looking at all the lovely clothes on that site! Thanks for the post.

dizzygran Tue 01-Jun-21 11:09:35

The comment about GC calling a dress a nightgown made me smile. I remember wearing what I thought were fshionable check trousers to be brought down by GD asking why was I wearing my pyjamas - I thought the dress looked summery and cool and will check the website.

Witzend Tue 01-Jun-21 11:09:39

Yes, it does look really nice in the photo, but I did factor in before ordering that the model is probably 5 foot 10 and wearing a size 8. So I was all too aware that it wouldn’t look quite the same on me, but for the sake of cool, airy comfort, I took the sod-it approach.
It actually comes with a jersey slip, but to me that would defeat the object - it’s not really see-through anyway - so I binned it.

jaylucy Tue 01-Jun-21 11:10:27

When you have got fed up of wearing it as a dress, it will be a lovely nightie!
As long as it's comfortable and cool on a hot day and I bet it makes you feel elegant when wearing it too
Won't be long before I'll be fishing out my maxi dresses and they are in no way fitted, but cool and comfortable. Wins every time for me!

tigger Tue 01-Jun-21 11:13:28

Good for you enjoy

Nannan2 Tue 01-Jun-21 11:13:37

I got a two- pack of cotton mix dresses for £20 from a 'catalog' type website- may have been simply be or marisota, not sure, but was in two minds about them, but turns out they are so comfy, both a lovely cobalt blue, (one plain, one a leopard print) both midi length( but im short so possibly bit longer) ?But they both have 2 deep-ish side pockets, which i love! great for lounging in at home, and if i go in garden can pop my phone in the pocket! I'm glad i didn't send them back. They do have short-ish sleeves though (like on a tee shirt) but i don't like long ones in warmer weather, and at least my arms can get a bit of sun, but they turned out to be a great comfy bargain buy.?

Alioop Tue 01-Jun-21 11:30:07

It's not a sack of potatoes dress, it looks nice and will be cool in the summer with it being 'floaty'. Good on you ordering a 2nd! grin

annodomini Tue 01-Jun-21 12:12:09

I love the look of the dress, though not the price. Doubtless there will be similar, more affordable, garments around this summer. I always loved seersucker. One favourite, maybe 40 years ago, was my seersucker culottes. I suppose they went to a charity shop when fashions changed or I put on weight. Had I but known that this summer they might have been state of the art!
