Just putting my two pennorth in, not that it’s anything to do with me, I would rather have seen a statue of Diana on her own, not with anonymous random children.

It’s obviously to emphasise her love of children, but not necessary, IMHO.

Did she not care for anonymous random children ?

I’m sure she did Annie, but I still think she should have been on her own.

She also cared about AIDS sufferers, landmine victims, the homeless, but I suppose children were the more obvious accompaniment, if they wanted her accompanied.

I am assuming that Diana’s sons wanted a representation of the mother they knew and not the glamorous posed persona that we know from the photographs in the press. Perhaps that is why posters think that the statue doesn’t look like her.

Why is she wearing such horrible, fussy, tight clothes?
Why not something a bit flowy and dynamic (there's a reason why classical sculptors favour robes)
Or a simple shift dress, like the ones that she favoured?
I agree Calendargirl, she should be on her own, no 'props'. There is far too much distraction and not enough 'Diana'.

It's all very literal to my mind.

It represents the woman she became not the 19 year old.

But she never became that old as represented by the statue.
She looks like a grim late middle aged woman.

She was only 36 when she died and, in all the pictures I've seen of her with any children, she has a glow and a compassion about her. She had a natural rapport with children.

A beautiful, emotive, timeless work of art.
More emotion conveyed in her gift of a face (bonestrucure and classical features).
Graceful lines to highlight her beauty.
A touch of movement and dynamism to capture her vibrance.
There could be use of symbolic emblems too.
And certainly not that dark. I don't know anything about materials but I wouldn't have chosen that.

Yesterday I thought of our war memorial in Derby. I wish that I could post a picture or link.
Anyway, it's noteworthy in that it is the only war memorial in the UK that doesn't feature men of arms.
Instead it's a woman holding a child, representing the senseless loss of loved ones.
Its a thoughtful piece of public art.

I don’t know much about sculpture but I’m not very keen on this depiction of Diana. I certainly don’t like the material used. I wonder if her sons like it? I guess they must.

That's certainly not what I was saying.

I don’t like it as a piece of art whoever it was meant to portray.

In the modern world are statues out of date?
Because we have so much visual of Diana, in this instance, in our brains anything would be disappointing.
Her clothes date her in the 80s - maybe that's the one her sons want to see her as. I had a belt like that from Dash!
I preferred her in the 90s casuals boldly walking through the landmines but i wasn't asked.
I would have liked her standing their in the dancing with John Travolta dress in a dancing pose!
The Prince's have possibly pigeonholed her in this as their mum and not the iconic rebellious woman of the world - it's what all our kids do to us!

In the Hepworth Gallery i have seen dog shoe chews dangling on string labelled as art. I am not a fan of sculpture!
It's a similar result to the painting of Sir Winston that he hated! (As portrayed on The Crown)!
