But yes, you're right. I don't know that everyone is female.
So apologies to anyone who isn't.

FannyCornforth Wed 02-Jun-21 08:31:51

Anyway, enough of this -
What would you name a baby girl?

Ellianne Wed 02-Jun-21 08:33:47

We say "folks" a lot in London.

Anyway back to names. Mine and my daughters were already mentioned x 3 n yesterday's offerings. grin

Personally I might choose Imogen or Isabella.

FannyCornforth Wed 02-Jun-21 08:45:39

I've always loved Imogen.
When I was a little girl I wanted two daughters called Imogen and Ursula.
I think that I may have been influenced by the books of Noel Streatfield.

(Folks is great btw smile)

If we’d had a daughter she would have been called Bethan, still love the name. Don’t suppose H&M (people not store grin) will have it on their radar.

Another here who dislikes being called a guy, it’s a phase, it will pass - I hope. Mr C shudders when he hears it as I have been known to object out loud, just sometimes when I’m really grumpy you understand. Keep chatting fannyc, why not? .

GrannyLaine Wed 02-Jun-21 09:22:32

If we'd had another daughter she would have been named Mary Florence. It took me many many years to quite come to terms with knowing that my fourth baby was my last: Mary Florence was the potential baby that was somewhere near but never a reality. It was very strange.....

Fanny, I'm female but NOT a lady. I actually quite like "you guys"

Talullah Wed 02-Jun-21 09:24:17

I loved Noel Streatfield's books, Fanny Cornforth. Used to feel a bit sorry for Pauline though. Petrova and Posy definitely got the more exciting names.

Iam64 Wed 02-Jun-21 09:28:50

I dislike “ladies’

I sometimes enjoy ‘hey guys, your table is ready’ from the wait staff
I always enjoy ‘hey guys, let’s go to the park’ from my young grandchildren

FannyCornforth Wed 02-Jun-21 09:31:59

Right. I won't say ladies anymore (just on this thread, mind you).
I will try to think of other ways of addressing you guys (there, I did it! Never again).

I knew that I read all of Streatfield's books, but I can't remember a thing about them apart from the names, many of which I couldn't pronounce, Horatio comes to mind.
I pronounced it 'Horry at ee oh' in my head

FannyCornforth Wed 02-Jun-21 09:36:07

In my department at work, we are all female apart from one man.
One of our team always starts her emails to us
'Dear Ladies and Dave'

I find that really annoying

Peasblossom Wed 02-Jun-21 09:36:20

Thanks to this thread, I dreamt I was at a Royal tea party last night.

There was not much to eat on my table and I had to go round scavenging from others.

I was especially indignant that others seemed to have trifle.

FannyCornforth Wed 02-Jun-21 09:38:55

Who else was there Peasblossom?
Do you know what you were wearing?

lemsip Wed 02-Jun-21 09:39:41

if I'd had a daughter she would have been called Stella. I had a son though.

Yuk! If anyone could get that changed, with good humour - it’s you Fanny - do it

When GUM (Great Uncle Matthew) sent the third baby to Sylvia and Nana, he commented “Her name is Posy. Unfortunate, but true”.

Smileless2012 Wed 02-Jun-21 09:43:12

Been off line for a few days and just found this thread which I've read from the beginning and am thoroughly enjoying so thank you Fanny for starting it.

If we'd had a daughter I'd have chosen Josephine, my all time favourite girl's name which was also my mum's middle name.

If I were fortunate enough to be invited to a garden party at Buck house, my biggest worry would be whether or not to wear heelshmm. Always feel more elegant in heels but wouldn't want to sink into the lawnblush.

LauraNorder Wed 02-Jun-21 09:55:50

Yes Smileless definitely platform soles for a garden party unless you are one of those tall willowy types who look great in trainers with a summery dress.

maddyone Wed 02-Jun-21 10:30:07

You can buy little clear plastic things (don’t remember their name) that you put on the end of the heel on your shoe. They prevent you from sinking into the lawn. I got some for my daughter’s wedding after I kept sinking into the grass at my son’s wedding.

maddyone Wed 02-Jun-21 10:33:20

Found some on Amazon, called high heel protectors. I didn’t get them there, I can’t remember where I got them from to be honest.

Lillie Wed 02-Jun-21 10:35:22

this is a nice thread to pop up. what about Sally
so when Harry met Sally?

Lexisgranny Wed 02-Jun-21 11:15:26

I recall many years ago going to Wimbledon straight from work to meet my flat mates. Having stayed to the bitter end, there were hoards of crowds waiting for public transport, so we decided to walk “across country”. Shortly into this journey, and for no apparent reason, the heel came off my shoe. We had no idea where we were and could not see any signs of public transport. I tried to rip the heel off the other shoe, but it wouldn’t budge, the only option was to limp the rest of to way, the barefoot option being the alternative. I think we arrived back way after midnight!

Lexisgranny Wed 02-Jun-21 11:17:11

Totally ignore the above.......too much sun, should have been talking about shoes!

FannyCornforth Wed 02-Jun-21 11:37:20

Don't worry Lexisgranny!

I've just heard on the news that we are getting a four day Bank Holiday in honour of HRH's Platinum Jubilee.

I vague remember her Silver one. I must have been about 5 or 6. All the street parties. My mom made me a red, white and blue dress. And my dad, ever the perfectionist, made me a stunning replica crown.

Grandma70s Wed 02-Jun-21 11:43:49

Good heavens, Fanny, you are about the same age as my children!

Blossoming Wed 02-Jun-21 11:50:31

Feel free to call me Lady Blossoming if you wish. I can’t walk in heels or ballet flats, definitely a long dress and trainers for me. After reading all your comments I’ve decided I would accept the invitation because it sounds such fun!

I would name the baby Dorothea and she would be called Dolly by family and friends.
