Have you ever rang these shows? They are quite popular here, especially during ‘drive time’. There is the ABC one ( like the BBC) which is left leaning and 3 AW which is more right and centre leaning. Personally I have never actually rung them but I quite often listen. Sometimes it is a load of claptrap, sometimes quite interesting. Nearly always criticising government of course from one point of view or other.

Most talk stations want you to ring in,
as it gives them an indication of how many listeners are tuning in.

Oh- radio London. Takes me back to my early teens and pirate stations, early 60s.

Radio London is great… Vanessa Feltz’ programme is always enjoyable, varied discussions about current affairs or topical news and no music. Robert Elms is a fantastic source of information, in good times you find out what’s on and where to visit, and during lockdown it kept us very well informed. He also plays ‘grown up’ music during the show. Jo Good is hilarious especially for women of a certain age… so relatable. I much prefer local talk radio for the variety.

John Humphrey should retire (properly) I think.

hollysteers Sun 06-Jun-21 12:09:30

I like the radio from Ireland, courtesy and manners seem not to have been forgotten, unlike this country, where rudeness seems to prevail.
The Clarksons, Paxmans, John Humphreys et al can jump in the lake.

NotSpaghetti Sun 06-Jun-21 11:51:07

David Lammy makes no sense to me Bluebelle
I am way away from Tory!

But yes, I spend too long on the World Service - just wish there were fewer repeats.
Also love "Americast"
and listen to the American "This American Life" quite a lot.

There used to be a great phone-in in Southern Ireland with a great and humane presenter who came to the BBC with a show that didn't "take". Will try to remember who it was. Such a pity. He was definitely one to listen to in my opinion.

BlueBelle Sun 06-Jun-21 11:22:27

You’re ahead of me fanny I didn’t know we d ever fallen out ?
Hollysteers I m like you have the radio on all night it sends me off again when I wake up I don’t think Steve Allen has ever been entertaining he lives on calling those he doesn’t like every nasty name under the sun he is really really vitriolic and I m amazed no one has ever taken him to task The things he says about any celebrity he takes a dislike to are really awful and he goes on and on for days no wonder the country is so miserable listening to him and his nastiness
I think David Lammy makes a lot of sense but I guess if your a Tory you wouldn’t like him
Widdecombe should retire to the country and disappear

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Jun-21 11:14:20

I have to have the World Service on overnight now during the week, as the adverts on LBC drive me potty.
Yes, Eddie does have a beautiful voice.
He'd be lovely to have on overnight ?

hollysteers Sun 06-Jun-21 11:11:08

I have the radio on all night low to help me sleep.
Can’t stand Ferrari, always interrupting, I feel he’s not listening just waiting to butt in.
Darren Adam helps me sleep as he’s so boring? Eddie Mayer is my favourite, lovely voice and as voices are important, can’t stand O’Brien, really up himself too.
Allen and Abbot used to be amusing. What happened?

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Jun-21 11:08:53

Lembit Opick! I can't believe I wrote that!

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Jun-21 11:05:29

Yes, I agree (again!)

Although she's not as bad as Edwina Currie was for ubiquity a few years back. AndObit Lempick (sp?) shock

Did you listen to Any Questions / Answers yesterday NotSpaghetti?
It's one of my weekly highlights!
The old stalwart Ann Widdecombe was on!
Have you had your texts read out?

It was SO awful I switched it off!
So yes I intended to listen but just got too fed up with it.

Ann Widdecombe should not be invited any more in my opinion. She has never been my favourite person but sadly now gives older women a bad press. She has become a cartoon.
WHY do they keep inviting the same old, same old people onto the panel?

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Jun-21 10:56:19

NotSpaghetti I totally agree re Lammy and O'Brien.

Andrew Castle is awful. In a permanent state of disgusted rage.
He must be hell to live with.

NotSpaghetti Sun 06-Jun-21 10:52:19

Hi,
The thing I like about LBC, Fanny is that they have a good mix of opinions. I disagree with almost everything Ferrari says but can listen to other views with him - I do find him unpleasant though. I think that’s what sets LBC apart, the variety. Just can’t bear Lammy! And though I agree with a lot of O’Brien, I think he’s sometimes a bit smug. Sometimes I do have to switch it off though when I get too cross!

Yes, I’ve had texts read out a few times including on Woman’s hour. I also had a long conversation once with a researcher who tried to bully me into being interviewed on a topic I had written in about it. I didn’t do it though as I knew it would be awkward for ex-clients. I had sent in four carefully crafted lines for them to read - which prompted the call in the first place (they didn’t read them)....

Years ago I was a (volunteer) director of a national charity and was interviewed quite a few times by the press and radio/TV.

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Jun-21 08:29:15

Yes - I know BlueBelle, I was clarifying for Nanna8 not you.
Please let's not fall out (again).
Yes - Majid is really, really clever. And he always does his research.
He is a very admirable man. (And very handsome!)
I always feel like I know O'Brien.
We were born four days apart and he grew up very, very near me. I probably met him in a Stourbridge pub years ago.

BlueBelle Sun 06-Jun-21 08:01:59

Yes. Jeremy Clarkson doesn't have a radio show. Or Piers Morgan for that matter confused

I like that a yes and a negative holding hands in one sentence ?
I didn’t imply Morgan or clarkson had a radio show I gave them as examples of the type of man Farrari fits in with and
I’ m sure you know that Fanny

Yes Naawas is opinionated too and can go on a lot about himself I just admire his knowledge and intelligence
O Brian talks too much too sometimes but seems much kinder than the alpha males mentioned on radio AND tv (just to clear up he confusion in this thread ??

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Jun-21 07:11:12

Yes. Jeremy Clarkson doesn't have a radio show. Or Piers Morgan for that matter confused

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Jun-21 07:10:15

Just to clarify - Ann Widdecombe doesn't have a radio show.
She was simply a guest on a long running, prestigious Radio 4 political program.
They take texts - which is why I mentioned the program - my comment was aimed at NotSpaghetti

nanna8 Sun 06-Jun-21 07:01:51

The shock jocks were mostly Sydney radio people, we are a bit more discerning here hehe. They did try it down here but it wasn't so popular. I've seen Anne Widdecombe, not my cup of tea but that is just an impression from afar. Jeremy Clarkson- is he the one who is on the show about cars? I think they said he was encouraging people to break speed limits and hoon around doing wheelies if I remember?

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Jun-21 07:00:06

BlueBelle - I also rate O'Brien, Nawaaz, and Abbott, but they too could just aswell be described as 'arrogant, pompous and overbearing'.
Nawaaz especially, when he gets a bee in his bonnet. Sometimes he really over steps the mark into unprofessionalism.
I'm not even going to waste any time sharing my opinion on odious Allen.

I wasn't passing any judgement on Widdecombe, I simply found it amusing that she was on AQ. She just keeps on going!

BlueBelle Sun 06-Jun-21 06:43:48

I can’t stand Ferrari I don’t agree with his politics but that’s not why I don’t like him I think he’s over bearing, pompous and arrogant the same reason I don’t like the Piers Morgan and Jeremy clarkson type man
Nick Abbott is my firm favourite he makes me smile and I don’t find him bitter Maajid Nawaz is a highly intelligent man as is O Brian

As well as Ferrari the other one I find abysmal is Steve Allen such a nasty vitriolic person who constantly blows his own trumpet and is so personal in his condemnation of anyone he takes a dislike to, he passes on lots of incorrect news too I ve texted him and had it read out and poopooed of course

Anne Widdecombe is up there with Nick Farrari cannot bear her, her views, or her voice when I saw her singing and twirling her flag with the dreadful farage I realised what a silly silly old lady she is

Who do you like on LBC NotSpaghetti?
I had a bit of a fall out on here with someone about Ferrari, while I don't agree with much of his politics, he is still a brilliant presenter.
I think my favourite is Darren Adam, he is so calm, balanced and eloquent.
I used to absolutely love Nick Abbott, but he seems so bitter now, I think that he may have 'issues'.

NotSpaghetti Sun 06-Jun-21 03:59:47

I like LBC too Fanny. Never have called them - but have texted in to Radio 4 a few times.
