The death of the comedian

I truly can’t find any comic shows worth watching on tv these days, or individual so called comedians, either. The young ones seem to be potty mouthed just for the sake of it ( and back in the day I had a few laughs at Billy Connolly because he actually was funny).

Have you watched "Ghosts"? yes it has near the knuckle bits but it is also touching and funny. Its by the Horrible Histories crew.

muse Sat 26-Jun-21 12:27:26

There are so many from years ago but more recent ones:

Another vote for Ghosts.
Motherland. Fleabag. Detectorists. Bill Bailey (Live - limboland)- BBC
Derry Girls - Ch4
After Life - Netflix

I hated Fleabag. I just couldn't relate to the lifestyles of the people in it at all - a generation thing, obviously, but it just didn't resonate with me.

I thought Detectorists was wonderful, though. Gentle, well-observed, witty and well acted. I'm quite envious of anyone who hasn't seen it, as they have a real treat in store.

I like Motherland as well and Not Going Out.

I agree nanna8 there are very few comedy shows or comedians who appeal to me now.

timetogo2016 Sat 26-Jun-21 13:13:42

I still find Billy Connoly funny.
Mikey Flanagan and Ricky Gervais are funny, albeit they are a bit corse at times.

nanna8 Sat 26-Jun-21 13:26:09

Yes Ricky Gervais I agree is funny. I don’t know the others because we get different stuff here. Nothing worth watching, sadly. We used to have a comedian called Chris Lilley who was quite funny but the pc brigade didn’t like him so he’s gone. He did a spoof on state high schools and private school girls.

Alegrias1 Sat 26-Jun-21 13:28:48

I used to crack up at Kath and Kim.

Noice.

SueDonim Sat 26-Jun-21 13:38:22

We went to see Billy Connolly once. I laughed so hard I thought I’d broken some ribs! My stomach muscles ached for days afterwards. grin

I don’t watch much tv now so don’t know of many modern comedians.

Casdon Sat 26-Jun-21 13:45:10

I think there are some really good comedians around in the UK. Bill Bailey, Lee Mack, and my favourite, John Bishop for starters. None of them are young or potty mouthed.

Antonia Sat 26-Jun-21 17:22:37

I do like Derry Girls, but today's comedians don't shine in comparison with the past greats: Morecambe and Wise, Ken Dodd, the Two Ronnies

BlueBelle Sat 26-Jun-21 17:39:28

I lovvveee Billy Connelly he just has funny bones however old and infirm he gets John Bishop is funny and Shapa corsandi
makes me laugh even when she says nothing much Russel Kane does observational comedy well and I don’t mind Michael Macintyre
I know this will go against the mainstream opinions but I never found Ken Dodd Morcombe and Wise or the two Ronnies remotely funny
I don’t really like situation comedy either always seems very contrived so don’t watch the ‘comedy’ series

dragonfly46 Sat 26-Jun-21 17:57:59

I love Not Going Out and Would I Lie to You.

trisher Sat 26-Jun-21 20:03:32

Loved Derry Girls, thought Miranda was hilarious, and Motherland.
Quite a few good women comics Sarah Pascoe, Diane Morgan (Philomena Kunk was genius) Rachel Parris

JaneJudge Sat 26-Jun-21 20:21:51

Roisin Conaty is v funny
this way up was a good series, i think wrote by sharon horgan
starstruck was good but quite young
loved, back to life
there is loads of funny stuff

Mattsmum2 Sat 26-Jun-21 20:35:58

I liked the Office USA after the first series.

NanKate Sat 26-Jun-21 20:47:03

Paul Merton makes me laugh with his off the wall comments.

Henning Wehn the German comedian has IMO a British sense of humour. So funny.

PinkCakes Sat 26-Jun-21 20:48:39

I like The Office (Ricky Gervais), Have I Got News For You, Would I Lie To You, and Man Down.

What do you mean by "potty mouthed"? Swearing? Sexual references?

I don't mind swearing (it's just words), but don't like vulgarity. I don't like Jimmy Carr for that reason, but find Mickey Flanagan and Sean Lock very funny.

Vallotton Sat 26-Jun-21 20:49:42

My favourite comedy series of late has been The Ranganation, a format that I think worked better in a lockdown Zoom setting in series 2 and 3 compared to the studio setting of series 1. Yes, there's bit of bad language but I really enjoy the banter between Romesh Ranganathan and his regular Zoom focus group including his mum.

Think being politically correct has stunted flair.

Callistemon Sat 26-Jun-21 21:01:07

I've been Out Out today so only just saw this thread but yes, there are many on here I find funny, Micky Flanagan for one.

Are we talking about comedians or comedy shows?
John Bishop, Lee Mack, Henning Wehn, Shappi Khorsandi
Peter Kay and Sian Gibson - Car Share

DH and I probably have different ideas about what is funny, he disliked This Country and I loved it.

leeds22 Sat 26-Jun-21 21:04:24

Motherland is funny, in an excruciating way. I also like Have I Got News for You. On the radio I listen to Deadringers, The News Quiz and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue.

I liked Peter Kay, Drop the Dead Donkey andThe Thick Of it (despite the language)

NanKate Sat 26-Jun-21 21:13:13

I so agree agree Kim. However be warned whenever I complain of ‘political correctness’ I usually get a telling off.

biglouis Sat 26-Jun-21 21:14:53

Motherland is brilliant - the hellscape of the school gate and all those bitchy mums.

Talullah Sat 26-Jun-21 21:16:18

I love Motherland. And Peter Kay. And Russell Brand. Not everyone's cup of tea but I went to see him live and almost had to leave the theatre. I was laughing so much I was close to fainting. Tears streaming, I could hardly breathe.
